SCRIPTURE REFLECTION what is good and pleasing to God our savior.” We will only grow in holiness of life and in our ability Jesus uses an interesting parable today to make to live less selfishly and more for others, when a very important point. It is a sad reality that we we learn to come before God in humility and faith are far more cunning and scrupulous when it each day in prayer. Prayer helps us to deepen comes to navigating the ways of the world than our sense of total dependence on God, it sets we are with regards to the state of our souls. Our before our eyes our own unworthiness, it brings time and energy are so often caught up securing to reflection our failures and sins and the needs for ourselves a secure and comfortable life. But all we have for grace. In the end it is our daily prayer too often we fail to pursue the things that will that will draw us ever more deeply into the heart ensure the health of our souls and lead us to of our Savior and help us to focus less and less salvation. “No servant can serve two masters. on these earthly pursuits that are fleeting and You cannot serve both God and mammon.” illusory, and more and more on the higher things Turning the pursuit of money and the comforts in of life that will lead us on the path to heaven. this life into a god violates our call to Gospel living and, in the end, derails our journey of holiness and faith. ON MISSION CORNER All too often this earthly pursuit can engender in WITH FATHER STUBNA our hearts terrible vices: selfishness, pride, envy, greed, conceit, gluttony, and lust. There is a If there is one virtue that Saint Paul, writes about with reason some of these have been called capital great consistency, it would be GRATITUDE. St. Paul speaks often of the gratitude and thanksgiving that sins. They work to put our spirit to death and lead must be constantly in the heart of every Christian. “I us to the path of damnation. Jesus teaches us the call to charity, to kindness, to a concern for the thank my God whenever I think of you; and every time needs of others, regardless of our state of life. I pray for all of you, I pray with joy…” (Ph. 1:3). This grateful spirit flows always from an awareness of the This is the call to love God and love neighbor blessings and gifts of a merciful and loving God who above all else, to see first the Kingdom of God, never fails to shower his blessings upon us. It is and all else will be given to us through the grace and kindness of God. gratitude, for St. Paul, that leads one to a life of joy. And when we possess joy, it is impossible to be cruel, The prophet Amos calls out those in the mean, judgmental, unforgiving, or lack compassion for community who have sought their own gain at any others. I am reminded of a teaching from St. John cost. “Hear this, you who trample upon the needy, Chyrsostum, one of the Church Fathers who said: “Let and destroy the poor of the land.” He promises us give thanks to God continually. For, it is outrageous that the Lord will never forget a thing they have that when we enjoy His benefaction to us in deed done! We must surely be attentive to the things of every single day, we do not acknowledge the favor this world. We have obligations to our family and with so much as a word; and this, when the to others. Success in the workplace takes time acknowledgment confers great benefit on us. He does and effort. But we cannot engage in these not need anything of ours, but we stand in need of all pursuits with dishonesty in any fashion and we things from Him. In point of fact, thanksgiving adds cannot allow them to blind us to the greater things nothing to Him, but it brings us closer to Him. For if, of God. Each day we must kneel before God in when we recall the benefactions of men, we are the recognition of this divine majesty; we must live in more warmed by affection for them; much more, when a spirit of humility and gratefulness for all that we we continually bring to mind the benefits of the Master have in life as gifts from the Lord himself; we must towards us, shall we be more earnest with regard to use whatever resources we have to better the His commandments. For this cause Paul also said, Be lives of those around us, responding to the needy ye thankful. For the best preservative of any and poor always with compassion, kindness and benefaction is the remembrance of the benefaction, love. and a continual thanksgiving for it.” St. Paul expresses his hope that in every place I know we all learned the importance of this virtue as God’s holy people will lift up their hearts and children. Who among us growing up did not have to sit hands in prayer and praise. This is a summons to immediately after receiving a birthday card with money daily prayer, a call to each of us to be faithful in or some gift and write a thank you note? SANCTUARY SAINT MICHAEL PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION. We have been praying CANDLE FOR the St. Michael prayer after communion for a number of years at the Cathedral THIS WEEK, and St. Regis and since last October at St. Stephen and St. Rosalia as well. from September 21 Pope Leo XIII wrote the Saint Michael prayer in 1884, after supposedly seeing through September a frightening vision: evil spirits, trying to fulfill Satan’s boast to destroy our 27, is being offered Lord’s Church within a century, were engaging in fierce attacks against it. for: Although the Pontiff also saw St. Michael casting Satan (also known as the devil) and his demons back into Hell in his vision, he was so horrified by what THE LIVING & DECEASED he had seen he felt compelled to help defend our faith in this struggle. In the MEMBERS OF THE St. Michael prayer, he throws down the gauntlet to “the father of lies” as Jesus CAVALIERE FAMILY calls the devil in John’s Gospel (8:44), by enlisting the help of a very special Archangel. As a special patron and protector of the Church, St. Michael has been assigned to fight against Satan; to protect faithful souls from him, especially at their death; to champion God’s people; and, further along this line, to escort them to their judgment. Pope Leo XIII saw to it that the St. Michael prayer was recited after every low Mass throughout the world (The low Mass, discontinued in 1970 after Vatican II, was said by a priest alone, with no music). THE BLESSED MOTHER This prayer is not said at Mass today, but in 1994 Pope John Paul II urged the ALTAR VIGIL LIGHT FOR faithful to keep reciting it. Although we tend to downplay the notion of the devil as being too quaint or outmoded today, he does indeed exist and not just as a THIS WEEK, from Septem- symbol of evil, or as a character in a fairytale to frighten us. Prayer and the ber 21 through September 27, sacraments are an essential part of what St. Paul called the “armor of God” in is being offered for: his letter to the Ephesians. The Saint Michael prayer can help us indeed “stand against the deceits of the devil” (Eph 6:11) by “taking the shield of faith” (Eph THE CATHEDRAL 6:16). Remember, God permits us to be tempted by the devil but gives us the BENEFACTORS grace to resist him through prayer in our daily lives. Let us not be afraid to ask for St. Michael’s help in this prayer and otherslike it. We need to remember that each time we pray we work to defeat our real enemies, not each other, but rather the devil and his evil spirits. As St. Paul put it, we fight “not against flesh and blood but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness” (Eph 6:12). With God’s help in prayer they can all be overcome. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. AMEN.

SAINT OF THE WEEK. September 27 marks the feast of SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL. He spent his early years of priesthood ministering among the wealthy and elite of his Parish, but it was the deathbed confession of a dying servant that stirred the heart of St. Vincent de Paul to see spiritual needs of the poor. Along with St. Louise de Marillac, he worked tirelessly for both the physical and the spiritual welfare of the poor and sick in the villages of France who were often overlooked by the Church and society. He founded the Congregation of the Mission to do three things: (1) pattern their lives on Christ; (2) to take the Gospel to the rural poor; and (2) to help educate priests in their GIVING HAS practical duties, especially hearing confessions more effectively. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE. The Respect Life Committee invites all members of our parish to witness to the sanctity of all human life, especially the unborn, by participating in the fall 40 Days for Life campaign which begins on Wednesday, September 25 and ends on Sunday, November 3. In a particular way, adults and young adults from all four parishes in our parish grouping are invited to pray in front of Planned Parenthood at 933 Liberty Avenue downtown. During the campaign, a peaceful vigil takes place from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every day. Specifically, we have a shift from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 2. If you are not familiar with 40 Days for Life, it is a focused prolife campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. The peaceful vigils are held throughout the world. Various churches and organizations from around the region sign up for fourhour shifts, but people are free to pray anytime. Please contact the respect life coordinator, Mark Sullivan ([email protected]) if you are interested in joining us. You can also learn more by visiting the 40 Days for Life website at http://40daysforlife.com/pittsburgh.html.

LIFE CHAIN. The National Life Chain is the largest peaceful, prayerful, prolife, public witness in the world. More than 1500 cities across the US and Canada are expected to participate on Sunday, October 6 from 1:00 2:00 pm. The St. Paul Cathedral grouping will be participating in the Life Chain on Fifth Avenue in front of the Cathedral. Signs will be available in the back of the church. Please join your fellow church parishioners in standing up for Life.

CPR TRAINING FOR FIRST RESPONDERS.As part of our ongoing process to be prepared for possible emergencies at the Cathedral, Drew McCabe, one of our parishioners and an instructor for the Red Cross, has graciously offered to teach Red Cross CPR training here at the Cathedral. The purpose of the CPR training is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies and to know how to care for a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. One training session took place on Saturday July 20 and a second session was held last Saturday, September 21. A third session has been scheduled for Saturday, October 26 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Cathedral social hall and is open for those of our parishioners who are likely to be present at the time of emergencies, such as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, and staff. We are really urging those in these positions to make an effort to attend so that we have a sufficient number of people who attend Mass regularly to be trained and ready to help in an emergency. You can help to save lives with this training. Drew is donating his time and materials (thanks Drew!) and the Cathedral will pay the cost of certification from the Red Cross for those attending the training classes. Please consider taking one of these CPR classes which will prepare you to help someone in an emergency. We ask that you contact the rectory indicating your participation. Only 10 persons can be registered for each session and we have a few spaces available. A third session has been scheduled for Saturday, October 26. Please register now! All members of the four parishes in our parish grouping are welcome to register. Saint Rosalia Parish
