These forty days call to mind for us the 40 days that Christ spent in the desert, praying and fasting. This is a season of penance, prayer, fasting and works of mercy as the means for interior conversion and growing in holiness SANCTUARY and faith. The Gospel on Ash Wednesday speaks of the three disciplines of the CANDLE FOR Lenten season that are important ways in which we can prepare ourselves well THIS WEEK, in this season of grace: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Lent calls us to deepen from February 22 our commitment to PRAYER. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through February we should pray “more often than we draw breath.” Lent is a good time to 28, is being offered increase our prayer life. Come to Mass more frequently, make a holy hour for: before the Blessed Sacrament once a week or daily, pray the rosary with your family every night at home, read the Bible and meditate on what you read, even BISHOP ZUBIK for five minutes each day. Lent also asks that we join ourselves more closely to the Cross and the sufferings Christ endured for our salvation. FASTING allows us to be detached more from the pleasures of this world so that we can fill it with spiritual realities. This is why Lent is a time for us “to give something up,” THE BLESSED MOTHER something that we really like and are attracted to so that in its absence we can ALTAR VIGIL LIGHT FOR give ourselves more completely to Christ and our faith. Abstaining from meat THIS WEEK, from February and eating only one full meal on Fridays in Lent are ways to keep the practice 22 through February 28, is of fasting. But Lent calls us as well to ALMSGIVING or in other words to works being offered for: of mercy and charity. We need to use our time, talent and treasure not selfishly but so that we can help others and work to build up the Body of Christ, the ANTHONY AND Church. Lent invites us to engage in acts of kindness for others, to be more BEATRICE FLEO charitable, to use our financial resources to help the Church and its outreach to those in need. Each of us needs to make and to keep Lenten resolutions that involve all three disciplines that the Church sets forth for us.

THE OAKLAND CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY will join us on Ash Wednesday, February 26 for the 8:15 am Mass. As always, we welcome them and are happy that they are joining us for the celebration of Mass.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY ARE DAYS OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE FOR ALL CATHOLICS. Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence as well. Abstinence refers to the requirement to refrain from eating meat or meat products on these days as an act of penitence for our sins. Fasting requires that we limit ourselves to one full meal and two very light meals on those days. No Catholic should consider this obligation of the Church lightly.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS are a beautiful devotion that invites us to walk the Way of the Cross with Jesus. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated during the Lenten season at Saint Paul Cathedral on Wednesdays at 12:45 pm (following the 12:05 pm Mass) and on Friday evenings at 7:00 pm (with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction). I encourage everyone to come and pray with us, to bring your family and friends, and walk the Way of the Cross with our Lord.

CRS RICE BOWL FOR LENT. All four parishes in our parish grouping will be participating in this year’s Rice Bowl project for Lent. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faithinaction program. It offers opportunities for us to practice the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It’s an opportunity for us as 4 parishes to come together and reflect on what it means to live our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. CRS is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic Community in the United States. 94% of funds donated to CRS go directly into programs to help those most in need. Funds collected through CRS Rice Bowl are distributed as follows: 75% go to CRS and 25% stay in our Diocese to help the poor. Please take a Rice Bowl home with you TODAY M read the insert for prayers and recipes. We will collect Rice Bowls at the end of Lent. Check out the link: https://www.crsricebowl.org/app.

OUR MEXT MONTHLY FAMILY FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM is scheduled for Sunday, March 1. It provides an excellent opportunity for the families in our parish grouping to come together across our parish boundaries for a monthly gathering. Join us at the 10:00 am Mass at the Cathedral followed by a gathering of our parents and children. It is an opportunity to reflect more deeply on the Liturgy of the Word proclaimed for that day, to talk about ways that we can put our faith into practice and help to make our families holy. It is also a wonderful way for our families to come together, whether your children are in Catholic school, parish religious education, or being homeschooled, this program invites our families to gather for fellowship and faith learning so that we can get to know each other and provide additional opportunities for our parents and our children to grow more deeply in their Catholic faith. This program begins immediately following the 10:00 am Mass from 11:15 am until 12:30 pm in the parish social hall. SHARE THE WORD WITH OTHER FAMILIES. MAKE A COMMITMENT TO JOIN US. The remaining dates are: March 1 and April 5.

FATHER STUBNA’S TOP 25 EASY TO READ CATHOLIC BOOKS. My eighth selection is Fire Within: Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and the Gospel On Prayer by Thomas Dubay. This book is the fruit of Fr. Dubay's many years of study and experience in spiritual direction and in it he synthesizes the teachings on prayer of the two great doctors of the Church on prayer St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila and the teaching of Sacred Scripture. But the teaching that Fr. Dubay synthesized is not collected from Teresa and John for contemplatives alone. It is meant for every Christian and is based on the Gospel imperative of personal prayer and the call to holiness. All the major elements of these great teachers are ordered, commented on and put in the context of their scriptural foundations. Here is an outstanding book on prayer and the spiritual life written by one of the best spiritual directors and retreat masters of our time and based on the writings of the Church's two greatest mystical doctors. THE ST. PAUL CATHEDRAL GROUPING RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE invites all members of our family to witness to the sanctity of all human life, especially the unborn, by participating in the spring 40 Days for Life campaign from Wednesday, February 26 through Sunday, April 5. In a particular way, you are invited to pray in front of Planned Parenthood at 933 Liberty Avenue downtown. During the campaign, a peaceful vigil takes place from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every day. Specifically, our group has a shift from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 25. If you are not familiar with 40 Days for Life, it is a focused prolife campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. The peaceful vigils are held throughout the world. Various churches and organizations from around the region sign up for fourhour shifts, but people are free to pray anytime. Please contact the respect life coordinator at the Cathedral, Mark Sullivan ([email protected]) if you are interested in joining us. ©LPi CHILDLINE PARA REPORTAR SOSPECHAS DE MATRATO DE NIÑOS: 18009320313 LE LA DIOSECIS PARA ASISTENCIA A VICTIMAS: 18888081235 Saint Paul Cathedral

This could be as simple as a pillowcase design made out of sturdy fabric. If you can help, please contact Ken Danchik at [email protected] or 4126214951. PANHANDLERS. We continue to have problems with some people who are homeless, some with serious mental health issues, and others who are abusing drugs and alcohol causing difficulty in the Cathedral itself and in our parking lot. PLEASE do not give money to anyone who is soliciting on Cathedral grounds; this is never a good idea for any reason and never helps a person in the way they need to be helped. If someone is belligerent or makes you uncomfortable call 911 immediately. We work very closely with our local law enforcement officials and very often these are the same people who are panhandling and threatening people in other locations and they are known to the police. We work in close cooperation with the East End Cooperative Ministry and it is always important before giving someone a handout to make sure we assess their situation and their need so that we can make the best response possible to help them. If you are being panhandled or approached in the Church or the parking lot let one of the priests know and let our security guards know if they are on sight. Thank you. “Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ's victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God “with all their hearts” (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity and to grow in with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return; by that patient expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive. Lent is a favorable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply.” ~ Pope Francis
