Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Cass. (Asterales ; Asteraceae) obtenue par entraînement à la vapeur a été analysée par Chromatographie en Phase Gazeuse couplée à la Spectrométrie de Masse. L’activité antimicrobienne de l’huile essentielle a été évaluée sur des bactéries et champignons de référence du Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire. L’huile essentielle est constituée essentiellement de monoterpènes (94,69%), d’hydrocarbures aromatiques (4,39%) et de sesquiterpènes (0,27%). Les composés majoritaires sont β- myrcène ( 35,52%), γ-terpinène (26,37%), β-pinène (21,65%), limonène (9,26%) et 1-undécène (4,39%). L’huile essentielle a inhibé la plupart des souches testées, Klebsiella pneumoneae, Bacillus subtilus CIP, Staphylococcus auréus, Staphylococcus épidermidis, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis et Candida glabrata, avec une concentration minimale inhibitrice (CMI) de 3,75mg/ml. Cependant , elles ne possèdent aucun effet sur Salmonella typhimirium SO 66, Eschérichia coli ATCC 25922 et Pseudomonas aéruginosa ATCC 27853. Please send the Seed Exchange Request Form (last page of booklet) by mail as soon as possible, but no later than DECEMBER 10. You can request your seeds on-line (see back page) and the complete seed list is available on the website for reference. This year you will find a special list of plants at the end of the ‘Native to North America’ section, of plants wild collected on Pink Mountain in northern BC. Please see the accompanying note in the November Bulletin. The Club would appreciate it if anyone who raises plants from these seeds and obtains seed from them would let us know. Those seeds may be useful in the future for revegetation projects. Allocation: Donors may receive up to 60 packets and non-donors 30 packets, limit of one packet of each selection. Donors receive preference for seeds in short supply. (USDA will permit no more than 50 packets for those living in the USA.) Blake, collected at Cerro Villonaco in Loja, Ecuador, were investigated with respect to their essential oil (EO). The chemical composition was determined qualitatively through gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and quantitatively by gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization (GC-FID), using relative response factors (RRF) based on the enthalpy of combustion. The essential oil contained between 92.5% and 93.4% of monoterpene hydrocarbons, with (E)-β-ocimene being the main component (35.2–35.9%), followed by β-phellandrene (24.6–25.0%), α-pinene (15.3–15.9%), myrcene (10.9–11.0%), sabinene (2.2–2.4%), (Z)-β-ocimene (1.5%), and germacrene D (1.2–1.3%). -

Leaving the low-lying agricultural land behind us, we drove west, along the Golu River, beneath maquis-covered hills, here and there scarred by past fires. We stopped beside the delightful model village at Pont Nuovo and were pleasantly surprised by the number of butterflies, enjoying the late summer sun, a good omen for the week ahead. After a coffee break beside the Genoese bridge, at Ponte Leccia, we drove north to the coast, with regular views of acrobatic Red Kites, overhead. At Isle Rousse, we enjoyed shopping for fresh produce from a farmer’s market, before continuing to Calvi and a brief exploration of the town and its busy marina. We had our picnic lunch by a rocky inlet, a little way down the coast, near Galeria and an opportunity to get to grips with the flora and more butterflies. Special plants here included three of the island’s endemics, namely Corsican Stork’s-bill Erodium corsicum, a Sea Lavender Limonium corsicum and the Knotgrass Polygonum scoparium. -
