PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Jesse Shore HOW MIGHT ACHILLES ATTACK THE PROBLEM OF RACIAL PREJUDICE? There is a taboo of sorts amongst a cohort of . That taboo is to avoid delivering drashot or writing divrei Torah on the first pasuk of the weekly parsha. (If we resort to quoting the very first Rashi, then it is considered all the more distasteful.) This is because discussing the first pasuk or utilizing Rashi is seen as intellectually lazy and spiritually unoriginal. The ideal would be to mine the literature for an underappreciated commentary, to insightfully add a novel idea, and to elegantly demonstrate how your idea is topical. Reflecting honestly, I cannot claim immunity from these peer pressures. By contrast, I am well aware that those who participate in our shul’s weekly Chumash Rashi Shiur are better inoculated than I am against making Rashi’s wisdom and insight a social taboo. Within our community, the Chumash Rashi Shiur is one of the oLerings in which we all can take pride - whether or not we regularly attend. So in an attempt to break that taboo, let’s review the first Rashi on the first pasuk of this week’s parsha. The first Rashi notes that the word Eikev is a homonym. In the immediate context of the pasuk, Eikev functions as the conjunction “if,” as in “if you obey…”. But Eikev is also a noun, translating to “heel.” Rashi, in accord with the Greek author Homer, uses the imagery of a heel to convey something that is often neglected and ostensibly insignificant, yet in reality is foundational, and serves a critical supporting role. Rashi asserts that the importance of our obeying Hashem’s rules and mitzvot does not depend on our subjective estimation of those mitzvot. Despite whether we perceive some mitzvot as insignificant, we ought to treat them as significant. In the redeeming mikvah of Torah, we must strive to fully immerse ourselves; every limb counts, even the heel. The problem is that this holistic mindset is not so easy to achieve. In discussing this problem with a member of our community, she oLered excellent insight. She said that if I don’t take any steps towards the changes that I want to see, then I know that the steps are not small and simple enough. Small steps, easy and simple movements, are more fundamental than the larger leaps and bounds towards some ideal. This is wisdom that we can take on immediately. Perhaps over the summer, we can make a list of some mitzvot that come easily to us. Or some small chessed opportunities that seem like nothing and bring us little to no inconvenience. We can then begin to practice them regularly, perhaps in preparation for the Yamim Noraim. Events of the past year have stressed the need to pursue very diHcult and complex ideals for our community: from security against antisemitism to social distancing, from being more supportive and sensitive to minorities in our community to advocacy. This can seem overwhelming. May Hashem grant us the wisdom to understand the importance of taking things one small step at a time. And if we do not see progress, then perhaps we need to take even smaller steps, despite our impatience and frustrations. For as Rashi argues, even small mitzvot may help us go a long way, they may bring us even further to our ideals than we are capable of recognizing.
