He served overseas between 1940 and 1945 as part of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Regiment. Beginning as a lieutenant, Whitaker participated in the Dieppe Raid of August 1942, the Normandy Landings of June 1944, and the Battle of the Rhineland in the spring of 1945. He was award a Distinguished Service Order for his service, and a second Distinguished Service Order in February 1945 for leadership in the Battle of Goch- Calcar Road during Operation Veritable. Following the war, Whitaker was appointed to Brigadier of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade, retiring from the military in 1951. He spent the remainder of his life as a military history writer, primarily based on research interviewing Canadian veterans. Several of these publications were co-authored with his wife, Shelagh Whitaker. In 1989, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. Whitaker passed away in 2001. Scope and content The fond contains the collection of research from three books published by Denis and Shelagh Whitaker. These are "Tug of war" published in 1982, "Dieppe" published in 1992, and "Victory at Falaise" also published with military historian Terry Copp in 2000.
