February 2018 Southside High School Newsletter February 2018 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS Announcements 3 Student Life 4 News 6 Entertainment 9 2 Tiger Times General Announcements February 18, 2018 By: Nabeeha Khan ● Spirit Week from January 29th- February 3rd ○ Monday: ○ Tuesday: Jersey Day ○ Wednesday: Superhero vs. Villians ○ Thursday: Throwback ○ Friday: Black-Out ● February 3rd: SHS Basketball vs Emerald ● February 3rd: Speech and Debate Tournament at Southside ● February 6th: SHS Basketball at Carolina ● February 9th-11th: State Beta Convention ● February 17th: Academic Team Tournament at Southside ● February 26th: Boys Soccer vs Travelers Rest ● February 27th: Girls Soccer at Greer 3 Tiger Times Student Life January 18, 2018 By: Nabeeha Khan A Beta Than Average Weekend After months of intensive fundraising, preparation, and exciting countdowns, Southside High Beta Club members finally went to the 2018 SC Beta Convention at Myrtle Beach -- and won some top prizes while there. Beta Club is a national society that promotes the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. The motto is: “Let us lead by serving others.” At the three-day long convention, students participated in various activities ranging from math competitions to scrapbook decoration contests. For the first time in history, Southside earned the Gold Key Growth award for having greater than 10 percent growth in Beta Convention attendance than the previous year. Students also did splendidly--sophomore Inaya Ebrahim won second place in Math Division I, Oscar Guillen won second place in Spanish Division II, Sofia Siddiqui, Sabrina Sabir, Lindsay Ackerman, and Shreya Sama won first place in Advertising Design, Brinton Gambrell, Bryson Scott, Dravon Drummond, Rochelle Sullivan, and Jasmine Klugh won second place Beta Build, Miracle Johnson, Maheen Ahmed and Sanju Kondapalli won second place in Spotlight on Service, Sabrina Sabir, Mehika Patel, Michael Ayala and Francisco Chavez won second place in Technology, Kathryn Ford and Taylor Sligh won second place in the scavenger hunt, and Apoorva Mahendranath won first place in Visual Arts: 4 Mixed Media. Overall we won eight awards, two more than last year, which not only shows the outstanding growth of the club’s quantity but also the growth of quality. While students won various awards, they also got to enjoy the beautiful scenery at Myrtle Beach and meet with students from all over the state. At the annual Beta Dance, students relaxed and mingled with other Betas, creating a stronger name for Southside and proving their school spirit. One of the most important things students learned at the trip was school spirit; after each person won an award, Southside students got out of their chairs, waved their hands around, and screamed out of excitement. The trip allowed students to be more comfortable with their school and standing as well as the other Beta members. It’s the second year that Southside’s able to go to Nationals at Savannah, Georgia, and we’re more excited than ever. Overall, we’ve had an upward trend in winning various awards at the Beta Club State convention and hopefully will continue this trend at Nationals and in the following years. Beta Club created bonds and strengthened relationships that one wouldn’t expect to happen on a three-day trip to the beach. This opportunity was big not only for Beta Club, but for Southside as a whole and transformed a club that was almost unknown at school to one that is now recognized nationally, and we hope it’ll continue doing so. 5 Tiger Times Student Life January 18, 2018 By: Mehika Patel V-Day Shoutouts! The Falcon Heavy is the fourth highest capacity rocket of all time, only trailing behind the Saturn V, Energia, and N1. It combines a strengthened Falcon 9 core with two Falcon 9 first stage rockets as boosters. On February 6th, SpaceX launched this most powerful rocket in current operation. 10 Before the launch, Musk said, “There's a real good chance the vehicle won't make it to orbit ... I hope it makes it far enough away from the pad that it does not cause pad damage. I would consider even that a win, to be honest.” Despite these uncertainties, the launch ended up being quite a success. The Falcon Heavy successfully released its dummy payload, a cherry red Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity by David Bowie, into space and the two side boosters successfully landed back on earth at Landing Zones 1 and 2. However, the main rocket missed its landing point on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Although the Falcon Heavy did not achieve any accomplishment of great importance, it has set a precedent for future launches. As of now, SpaceX intends to devote the Falcon Heavy to deliver satellites and other payloads into space, but in the future, it may be used to bring crews to the moon and Mars. 11 Tiger Times Entertainment January 18, 2018 By: Mehika Patel Entertainment for V-Day!
