According to a recent L.A Times article, some activists are moti- vated to end random bag searches, while some students disagree. Patriots were asked to give their opinion on the matter. "I think LAUSD should continue random bag checks. School is somewhere you should feel safe. One thing I would change though is when these checks take place. Instead of disrupting the learning of children, these checks should happen at nutrition or lunch.”—Arya Farkhondeh, 6th Grade “LAUSD should continue random bag checks because it is essential for students’ safety, and it helps them learn that they can’t get away with breaking the rules. But, I do not think that administrators should interrupt a class unless there is an emergency.” —River Tharae, 6th Grade “I do think LAUSD should continue with random bag checks because safety should be a priority in all schools. However, they could improve it in many ways, such as checking bags during Nutrition and Lunch rather than interrupting class time.” —Sammy White, 6th Grade “LAUSD should continue with random bag checks. EIGHTH GRADE JOURNAL Over the Years at Paul Revere By SAMMY DOHAD Guest Contributor One morning when I was in third grade, we had to pick up my brother at Revere because we had to go to New York. He was in sixth grade. This was the first time I had ever been on the campus. I thought it was too big. I thought when I go here I’m going to get lost. We had to walk into the attendance office and I sat on the bench outside and I looked around. Everything was so quiet and serious and it felt like nobody was having any fun. Three years later, on Aug. 18, 2015, I finally walked into my first homeroom as a Paul Revere student. I was in Ms. Mabashov’s sixth grade homeroom when she was still the math and science teacher. It felt really weird because I didn’t know anybody in the classroom except for three people – Aspyn, Josie and a kid named James who has left the school. I was looking forward to nutrition because then I would get a chance to see all the kids I knew from Marquez and Kenter Canyon. Gradually I made a lot of new friends, including Nicklas whose homeroom was right next to mine. Whenever we had homeroom breaks, we would talk outside the X Buildings. Back then when I saw the eighth graders I thought that they were way too big, like Charlie Newman who is like 6’2”. I was like 5’2”. In the summer between sixth and seventh, I grew about six inches taller. By seventh grade, I started to see that the school is actually pretty small the more I walked around it. That was a great year because all my classes were really easy and I had a lot of Bar Mitzvahs. I loved the parties because you got to dance with females. They all seemed to love to dance with me. Now that I’m in eighth grade and about 5’10.5’’, things are looking pretty good. I shaved my head in October but now that it’s grown (continued on page 14) 14 March 12, 2018 THE TOWN CRIER Paul Revere Charter Middle School

TALA MAHER Never Too Old To Snuggle? I remember four years ago, when I was eight, every time I was invited to a birthday party my mom would get the birthday boy or girl a Pillow Pet. I never understood the popular- ity of the gift until I was invited to each and every birthday in my class. Everybody wanted one, the sheep, the unicorn, the ladybug, the giraffe, the penguin, the zebra, you name it. My mom bought them all. She always said they were a cute, practical gift. I even owned a couple and took them wherever I went. By the time I was nine, they grew to be my favorite stuffed animal and pillow. I even had a unicorn dream light, which is a Pillow Pet that lights up. Every night before I went to sleep, I would turn on my dream light and watch my room explode like a colorful bomb just went off. When I was younger, I couldn’t sleep with the lights completely off. My dream light provided a great way to have a night light with a cool pattern that spread across my entire ceiling. Trying to understand the appeal of the Pillow Pets is not hard at all. No matter if you are one or one hundred, no one can resist the cutest stuffed animal that also turns into a pillow by one easy strap. Another reason why Pillow Pets blew up is because there are many efficient uses for them. If you want to rest your head on something during travel, or long car trips, or even using it as a cuddle buddy at night, Pillow Pets are perfect for anything. Some people might think that Pillow Pets are irrelevant, and ask why everyone loves them. Well in an Amber Merton article on Pillow Pets, it explains why. “They combine the security and joy a child finds from a stuffed animal, with the comfort and support of a pillow.” If you’re still a little concerned if Pillow Pets are even popular, then take it from these Revere Patriots. “They’re so cute!” Says Maddie Kelly. “Pillow pets are ador- able, cuddly, and perfect in every way!” Comments Alaina Porter. “They’re so soft and they make a perfect head rest!” Ely Rahimi says. As you can see, Pillow Pets can go from a kid’s best friend, to their nighttime buddy.
