John Woodman Higgins was a Worcester-born industrialist who owned Worcester Pressed Steel. He purchased objects for the collection between the 1920s and 1950s. Literature from the Middle Ages (or “Medieval,” i.e., the 5th through 15th centuries) was full of stories featuring knights—like those of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, or the popular tale of Saint George who slayed a dragon to rescue a princess. Chapter 8 — Padding Because you need to build your armour around your padding you need to know how to make it first! Gamberson This supplies basic padding under the body armour and something to hang your arm armour off. Some people rely on their gamberson (with a few minor additions such as a kidney belt) as their torso protection. This gives them excellent mobility at the expense of protection. If you are learning to fight, as well as armour, you are liable to get hit a lot so body armour might not be a bad idea—your choice! Making a gamberson is a sewing job; go get a needle and thread or borrow a sewing machine. The material you make it from should be relatively tough (it’s going to take a beating), adsorbent (you are going to sweat into it), colour fast (unless you want to start a new fashion in oddly coloured flesh) and washable (see sweating above). Period gambersons were made from multiple layers of cloth stitched together or padded with raw wool or similar material, modern ones often use an internal fill of cotton or polyester batting to achieve the same look with less weight. A descrip- tion of an arming doublet of the 15th century is “a dowbelet of ffustean (a type of heavy woollen broad cloth) lyned with satene cutte full of hoolis”. A heavy outer material, such as canvas or calico, is therefore appropriate with a softer lining next to the skin. For extra ventilation you can add buttonholes down the quilting seams. -

Constructing a Heavy-List Gambeson Tips and Techniques Lady Magdalena von Regensburg mka Marla Berry [email protected] July 16, 2005 An Historic Overview “Mail is tough but flexible; it resists a cutting sword-stroke but needs a padded or quilted undergarment as a shock absorber against a heavy blow.”1 Quilted garments were part of soldiers’ kits in varying forms and with varying names throughout most of the SCA timeline. Banners in heraldic art Magnus Backrnark Abstract The banner is very useful to heraldic art. It is a carrier of charges and colours, just like its coun terpart the shield. But where the shield can be seen as crude, heavy, flat and robust - its purpose being taking hits- the banner is brilliant, swift, full of I ife and motion. Its purpose is spiritual. It is lifted above anyone's head, above dust and confusion, for inspiration and guiding. Something of this character, I will with this article try to show by examples that the heraldic artist, if lucky, can translate in his or her work. First, we could though take a quick glance at the historical development of banners. The term banner approves, as we shall see, to a specific kind of flag, but in a wide sense of the word a banner is any ensign made of a peace of cloth, carried on a staff and with symbolic value to its owner(s). The profound nature of this innovation, which seem to be of oriental origin, makes it the mother of all kinds of flags. The etymologi cal root of the word banner is the French word banniere, derived from latin bandaria, bandum, which has German extraction, related to gothic bandwa, bandw6, 'sign'. 1 The birth of heraldry in the l2 h century Western world was preceded by centuries of use of early forms of banners, called gonfanons. Plate Armor (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY Plate armor is a historical type of personal body armor made from iron or steel plates, culminating in the iconic suit of armor entirely encasing the wearer. While there are early predecessors, full plate armor developed in Europe during the Late Middle Ages, especially in the context of the Hundred Years' War, from the coat of plates worn over mail suits during the 13th century. In Europe, plate armor reached its peak in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The full suit of armor is thus a feature of the very end of the Middle Ages and of the Renaissance period. Its popular association with the "medieval knight" is due to the specialized jousting armor which developed in the 16th century. Full suits of Gothic plate armor were worn on the battlefields of the Burgundian and Italian Wars. The most heavily armored troops of the period were heavy cavalry such as the gendarmes and early cuirassiers, but the infantry troops of the Swiss mercenaries and the landsknechts also took to wearing lighter suits of "three quarters" munition armor, leaving the lower legs unprotected. The use of plate armor declined in the 17th century, but it remained common both among the nobility and for the cuirassiers throughout the European wars of religion. After 1650, plate armor was mostly reduced to the simple breastplate (cuirass) worn by cuirassiers. This was due to the development of the flintlock musket, which could penetrate armor at a considerable distance. For infantry, the breastplate gained renewed importance with the development of shrapnel in the late Napoleonic wars. -

Longpoint 2019 Passage at Arms (Armored Combat) Equipment Regulations, v. 1.0 IMPORTANT: All competitors intending to participate in the Longpoint 2019 Passage at Arms must submit a photo of the armor they intend to wear for pre-approval no later than March 1, 2019. Earlier is better in case the event organizers require that you modify your armor before approval. Also note that initial pre-approval via photo does not guarantee that your armor will pass the required in-person inspection. OVERVIEW The goal of the Longpoint Passage at Arms is to promote the accurate but safe revival of period-correct fencing in armor in a one-on-one duel, referred to in German fighting treatises as harnisfechten. -Participants are expected to wear historical European-styled armor contemporary, or close to contemporary, of a person of rank as seen in the time periods of the treatises that detail armored combat techniques. The armor can be styled after historical armor from approximately the late 14th century to early 16th. Despite the wide range of time period allowed, combatants should do their best to keep their own harness cohesive to a single time period and not “mix and match” elements of different eras. Ideally, armor should not have elements that would have existed more than 20 years before or after any other element on a person’s harness. (E.g. a 16th century armet should not be paired with a 14th century coat of plates) Combatants are expected to wear a complete harness suitable for fighting in the lists of judicial combat rather than one specialized for warfare or other forms of combat. -

(14,490 g) RealArmeria, Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid (A 139) he Masks Garniture occupies a special place in the Negroli Toeuvre as the largest surviving armor ensemble signed by Filippo N egroli and the only example of his work to specify unequivocally the participation of two or more of his broth ers. The armor's appellation, "de los mascarones," derives from the grotesque masks that figure prominently in its dec oration, and it was coined by Valencia de Don Juan (1898) to distinguish it from the many other harnesses of Charles V in the Real Armeria. Indeed, for Valencia, none of the emperor's numerous richly embellished armors could match this one for the beauty of its decoration. As the term "garniture" implies, the harness possesses a number of exchange and reinforcing pieces that allow it to be employed, with several variations, for mounted use in the field as well as on foot. The exhibited harness is composed of the following ele ments: a burgonet with hinged cheekpieces and a separate, detachable buffe to close the face opening; a breastplate with two downward-overlapping waist lames and a single skirt lame supporting tassets (upper thigh defenses) of seven lames each that are divisible between the second and third lames; a backplate with two waist lames and a single culet (rump) lame; asymmetrical pauldrons (shoulder defenses) made in one with vambraces (arm defenses) and having large couters open on the inside of the elbows; articulated cuisses (lower thigh defenses) with poleyns (knees); and half greaves open on the inside of the leg. -
