And the band played on pdf Continue Music fans were sad to learn that Tom Petty passed away at the age of 66 on Monday night. The musician became famous for his successful career as a solo artist, but worked with several bands, including The Heartbreakers. Who the Heartbreakers were Tom Petty showed they were more than a band. They were the longest-running group Petty had worked with, playing together since 1976. Since then, Petty has released more than a dozen albums, either in collaboration with The Heartbreakers or prominently. Together, the band is recognizable for some of Petty's favorite hits, including Mary Jane's Last Dance and American Girl. The introduction to American Girl has probably stuck in your head since the first time you heard it, but for some reason, you just never get tired of it. You have Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to thank for that. Petty also collaborated with the following bands: Mudcrutch (1970-1975), the supergroup The Traveling Willburys (1988-1990). On Petty's solo albums, The Heartbreakers served as studio musicians, and were additionally supported by Petty's collaborator stable. This stable famously included musicians like Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, who were also two of the petty bandmates in Willburys Travel. Petty recorded with Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks and countless other industry icons, but The Heartbreakers were his constant. According to Petty's official website, the 2017 Heartbreakers included Campbell, Trench, bassist Ron Blair, rhythm guitarist Scott Thurston and percussionist Steve Ferrone. Ferrone joined in 1994 after drummer Stan Lynch left to work on other projects.

  • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

  • Running Down an American Dream: Tom Petty and the Tour T-Shirt
Running Down an American Dream: Tom Petty and the Tour T-Shirt Lauren O’ Hagan, School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University, John Percival Building, Colum Drive, Cardiff, CF10 3EU [email protected] 07971979912 Abstract Tom Petty has often been described as an artist who pushed the boundaries of creativity. Whether through his videos, lyrics or album covers, Petty was never afraid to experiment, explore new concepts and challenge fans to search for their own personal meanings in his work. This paper explores an often neglected part of originality in the Tom Petty story: the tour t-shirt. Using multimodal analysis to investigate three tour t-shirts from 1991 to 2003 (Touring the Great Wide Open, Dogs with Wings and The Last DJ), the analysis will demonstrate how image, color and typography, as well as layout, design choices and materiality, were used innovatively to transmit symbolic meanings on a core aspect of Petty’s recordings: the American Dream. The investigation concludes with a summary of the benefits of considering Tom Petty’s work within the context of multimodality, and the lasting appeal of his tour t-shirts. Biography Lauren O’ Hagan is a PhD student within the department of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University. Her current research project is entitled ‘Class, Culture and Conflict in the Edwardian Book Inscription: A Multimodal Ethnohistoric Approach’ and involves the study of 3,000 inscriptions present in books circulated between 1901 and 1914 in Britain. Alongside her PhD, Lauren works as a translator and EFL tutor. Acknowledgements I send my heartfelt thanks to Melissa Busch, Heidi Wright and Paul Kelly of Tom Petty Nation for kindly giving me permission to use their own tour t-shirt photos in this paper.
