Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. Media Culture: Cultural Studies, Identity and Politics Between The
Media Culture Media Culture develops methods and analyses of contemporary film, television, music, and other artifacts to discern their nature and effects. The book argues that media culture is now the dominant form of culture which socializes us and provides materials for identity in terms of both social reproduction and change. Through studies of Reagan and Rambo, horror films and youth films, rap music and African- American culture, Madonna, fashion, television news and entertainment, MTV, Beavis and Butt-Head, the Gulf War as cultural text, cyberpunk fiction and postmodern theory, Kellner provides a series of lively studies that both illuminate contemporary culture and provide methods of analysis and critique. Many people today talk about cultural studies, but Kellner actually does it, carrying through a unique mixture of theoretical analysis and concrete discussions of some of the most popular and influential forms of contemporary media culture. Criticizing social context, political struggle, and the system of cultural production, Kellner develops a multidimensional approach to cultural studies that broadens the field and opens it to a variety of disciplines. He also provides new approaches to the vexed question of the effects of culture and offers new perspectives for cultural studies. Anyone interested in the nature and effects of contemporary society and culture should read this book. Kellner argues that we are in a state of transition between the modern era and a new postmodern era and that media culture offers a privileged field of study and one that is vital if we are to grasp the full import of the changes currently shaking us. -
Dynamics of Musical Success: a Bayesian Nonparametric Approach
Dynamics of Musical Success: A Bayesian Nonparametric Approach Khaled Boughanmi1 Asim Ansari Rajeev Kohli (Preliminary Draft) October 01, 2018 1This paper is based on the first essay of Khaled Boughnami's dissertation. Khaled Boughanmi is a PhD candidate in Marketing, Columbia Business School. Asim Ansari is the William T. Dillard Professor of Marketing, Columbia Business School. Rajeev Kohli is the Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Business, Columbia Business School. We thank Prof. Michael Mauskapf for his insightful suggestions about the music industry. We also thank the Deming Center, Columbia University, for generous funding to support this research. Abstract We model the dynamics of musical success of albums over the last half century with a view towards constructing musically well-balanced playlists. We develop a novel nonparametric Bayesian modeling framework that combines data of different modalities (e.g. metadata, acoustic and textual data) to infer the correlates of album success. We then show how artists, music platforms, and label houses can use the model estimates to compile new albums and playlists. Our empirical investigation uses a unique dataset which we collected using different online sources. The modeling framework integrates different types of nonparametrics. One component uses a supervised hierarchical Dirichlet process to summarize the perceptual information in crowd-sourced textual tags and another time-varying component uses dynamic penalized splines to capture how different acoustical features of music have shaped album success over the years. Our results illuminate the broad patterns in the rise and decline of different musical genres, and in the emergence of new forms of music. They also characterize how various subjective and objective acoustic measures have waxed and waned in importance over the years. -

He met Madonna’s manager, Freddy DeMann, through his daughters, who went to BHHS as well, and played him some of those demos. W Nothing came of it, 160 161 but the two stayed in touch. The summer after graduation, Jerusalem-born Oseary went on some of the first Lollapalooza tour dates; Ice-T was on that tour, and Guy was managing his DJ, Evil E. He also went to Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica and New Music Seminar in New York, looking to find his musical path before starting college. When he came back to L.A., Oseary entered Cal State Northridge. Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
