NORTH (Honorary Secretary) reported the success of the late General Meeting held in Melton Mowbray, and votes of thanks were passed to Mr. Fetch for allowing excavations to be made upon his ground in search of Anglo-Saxon relics; to the Eev. "W. M. Colles, Vicar of Melton, for presiding at the public meeting; to the writers of the • Papers then read; to the clergy who opened their ohurches in the excursion; to Mr. M. H. Bloxam for describ­ ing those edifices; and to the many friends of the Society who by their courtesy, kindness, and hospitality, rendered the Congress an agreeable and successful one. The Secretary further reported that, in obedience to instructions given at the last meeting, he had sent a written invitation from this Society to the Central Committee of the Eoyal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, to hold the Annual Congress of that learned body in Leicester during the summer of 1870, or in some subsequent year. He hoped to be able to give the decision of the committee of the Institute at the next meeting. MR. JAMBS THOMPSON, referring to the same subject, informed the meeting that the Leicester Highway and Sewerage Committee— a committee comprising a large majority of the members of the Town Council, had desired the Town Clerk to invite the Koyal Institute to hold the annual meeting of 1870 in Leicester, such invitation to be confirmed by the Town Council at its next general meeting. Robert Haymes, Esq., was elected a member of the Society. The following antiquities, &c., were exhibited :— By the REV. J. H. HILL, a very perfect bow, or rather harp- shaped Roman bronze fibula, the property of the Rev. Thomas Heycock. This fibula, the pin of which is quite perfect, was lately found near the Rectory, in Seaton, Rutland. B VOL.

Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England.

    MARPRELATE TRACTS: HAY ANY WORK FOR COOPER 1 ________________________________________________________________________________ Hay Any Work For Cooper.1 Or a brief pistle directed by way of an hublication2 to the reverend bishops, counselling them if they will needs be barrelled up3 for fear of smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state, that they would use the advice of reverend Martin for the providing of their cooper. Because the reverend T.C.4 (by which mystical5 letters is understood either the bouncing parson of East Meon,6 or Tom Cook's chaplain)7 hath showed himself in his late Admonition To The People Of England to be an unskilful and beceitful8 tub-trimmer.9 Wherein worthy Martin quits himself like a man, I warrant you, in the modest defence of his self and his learned pistles, and makes the Cooper's hoops10 to fly off and the bishops' tubs11 to leak out of all cry.12 Penned and compiled by Martin the metropolitan. Printed in Europe13 not far from some of the bouncing priests. 1 Cooper: A craftsman who makes and repairs wooden vessels formed of staves and hoops, as casks, buckets, tubs. (OED, p.421) The London street cry ‘Hay any work for cooper’ provided Martin with a pun on Thomas Cooper's surname, which Martin expands on in the next two paragraphs with references to hubs’, ‘barrelling up’, ‘tub-trimmer’, ‘hoops’, ‘leaking tubs’, etc. 2 Hub: The central solid part of a wheel; the nave. (OED, p.993) 3 A commodity commonly ‘barrelled-up’ in Elizabethan England was herring, which probably explains Martin's reference to ‘smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state’.

    The Earl of Essex's Chaplain: Rev. Abdias Assheton

    The Earl of Essex’s chaplain: Rev. Abdias Assheton Anne Falloon, Middleton Archaeological Society 1 Introduction Abdias Assheton (1563-1633) was a member of Middleton’s manorial family who rose to some prominence in the final years of Elizabeth I’s reign. A Protestant with strong Puritan leanings, as an academic and preacher he sought all his answers not from centuries old tradition as his Catholic forebears had done, but directly from a deep reading of the bible. In the 1590’s his approach to thinking through religious and moral choices using scripture attracted the attention of the greatest man in England. This is the story of the controversial relationship between Essex and the influential chaplain he called his ‘little man’, Abdias Assheton. 2 The Asshetons and religion In the mid 16th century, members of the Assheton 1 family were faced with the decision everyone in the country had to consider: to accept the new state religion or adhere to the old one. There were costs attached to remaining faithful. Staunch Catholics felt they were risking their souls without the rituals of confessing to a priest and receiving the actual body and blood of Christ. As the century progressed, there were increasing worldly costs of not conforming in Elizabeth’s England. Catholic recusants who refused to attend church or take communion were heavily fined. Noble and gentry families could afford to pay, but only the wealthiest were able to continue losing income indefinitely. The majority of people opted for safety: committed Anglican Protestants conformed with enthusiasm, but others, the Calvinists and Puritans, were still nursing the ambition of purifying the English church still further.

JHe was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Bridgeman of Greenway, otherwise called Spyre Park, near Exeter, in the county of Devon, and grandson of Mr. Edward Bridgeman, sheriff of the city and county of Exeter for the year 1562-3.1 John Bridgeman was born at Exeter, in Cookrow Street, and christened at the church of St. Petrok's in that city, in the paro- chial register of which is the following entry : " the seconde of November, A.D. 1597, John Bridgman, the son of Thomas Bridgman, was baptized." '1 Bishop John Bridgeman is rightly described by Sir Peter Leycester as the son of Mr. Thomas Bridgeman of Greenway, though Ormerod, in his History of Cheshire, who takes Leycester's Historical Antiquities as the groundwork for his History, erro- neously calls him the son of Edward Bridgeman, and Ormerod's mistake has been repeated by his later editor (Helsby's ed.
