In 1948, Walter J. “Doc” Daugherty of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society proposed that an annual West Coast convention be started for West Coast fans who couldn’t afford to travel east each year. The first Westercon was held in September, 1948. It was a one-day event with an attendance of 77. It wasn’t until 1951 that the Westercon became a weekend-long event, settled into the July 4th holiday and began traveling to different cities. In 2016, Denver won the right to host Westercon 71 in 2018, which is being hosted by Myths and Legends Con 6!     1 Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Nancy Kress (February 2020) Nancy Kress is the author of thirty-three books, including twenty-six novels, four collections of short stories, and three books on writing. Her work has won six Nebulas, two Hugos, a Sturgeon, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, and has been translated into two dozen languages, including Klingon. In addition to writing, Kress often teaches at various venues around the country and abroad, including a visiting lectureship at the University of Leipzig, a 2017 writing class in Beijing, and the annual intensive workshop Taos Toolbox, which she teaches every summer with Walter Jon Williams. Tony DeSimone: “Nano Comes to Clifford Falls” is one of my favorite short stories. Do you think the advent of 3D printing could lead to that story becoming a reality? The 3-D printers in my story are super-machines, capable of creating anything. Although I think that large, versatile 3-D printers are certainly going to change manufacturing, by themselves they will not create the sort of universal unemployment that my story explores. You would still need to have raw materials mined or grown, transport to get those materials to the printers, and an economic reason to put traditional companies out of business. Competition will accomplish part of that, but not all of it. Like much SF, my story exaggerates the situation in order to spotlight it, especially its effects of my characters. That’s what, in my opinion, good SF does: not so much invent tech as examine what its effect on society could be.

And that’s exactly what the thirteen partici- pants of the 2005 Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Work- shop did. Eschewing the trappings of cuisine and throwing nutritional caution to the wind, they thrived on sandwiches and cereal, producing 79 stories with an impressive, carbohydrate-fueled total of 370,400 words. Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2018 Abstract Works of Epic Fantasy often have the reputation of being formulaic, conservative works that simply replicate the same tired story lines and characters over and over. This assumption prevents Epic Fantasy works from achieving wide critical acceptance resulting in an under-analyzed and under-appreciated genre of literature. While some early works do follow the same narrative path as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Epic Fantasy has long challenged and reworked these narratives and character tropes. That many works of Epic Fantasy choose replicate the patriarchal structures found in our world is disappointing, but it is not an inherent feature of the genre.
