2 SoHumane Fall 2019 A Saving Train Promise very day SoHumane receives requests for help from people desperate to save animals. Many areas Ein the Pacific Northwest are experiencing a pet overpopulation problem. Since 2005, SoHumane staff and volunteers have made frequent trips to high-kill shelters, driving hundreds of miles through Oregon and California to bring back dogs who were at death’s door due to time and space limitations. Last year the Saving Train program transferred more than 850 dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters to SoHumane. It’s not easy to visit the shelters. The animals who are loaded on the Saving Train are the lucky ones. Their future is bright, and their potential for a forever home is guaranteed. Your gifts provide food, shelter and veterinary care for these pets who are homeless. People from all over Southern Oregon come to the SoHumane Adoption Center to adopt and offer a second chance for the dogs and cats who are in our care. The Saving Train is just a vehicle, packed with kennels for dogs and sometimes cats. And over the years the cars and vans used have changed. But more importantly the Saving Train represents a promise and a testament to SoHumane’s dedication to saving lives. Thank you for joining us in our mission to fill our kennels with dogs and cats, young and old, so that they will have the opportunity to find new families and homes.

SoHumane Fall 2019 3 SoHumane Youth Programs

SoHumane summer camp participants learned the basics of responsible pet care, how to read dog and cat body language and the importance of spaying and neutering. By providing young people with positive animal interactions and information on how to properly care for dogs and cats, SoHumane’s education programs not only empower youth to treat animals with love and respect but also to become thoughtful, empathetic and civic-minded citizens.

For more information about SoHumane’s volunteer program and student activities, contact Judi Hanstein, Volunteer Coordinator, 541-779-3215 x 101 or [email protected].

4 SoHumane Fall 2019 Love Changes Everything

At the end of April, we adopted Howie (Saving Train). He is perfect for our family! Howie is VERY spoiled-he gets TWO walks a day through town, gets to sleep in a REAL bed UNDER the covers and goes on lots of car rides! He loves to snuggle and lets my boys wrap him in blankets and put him in strange positions on the couch! Howie also loves to dance! When any of us start dancing to music, Howie runs over to join in the excitement and even stands up on his hind legs! Thanks SoHumane! – Karen

Back in June we adopted Jelly, and boy has he been a blessing to our family. When we brought him home and walked through the door for the first Here is a photo of Ganon (now called “Tater”) time he adjusted so well as if he’s been with us for taken earlier today. Yes, he’s very spoiled. We just love him to pieces and are so very grateful to have him a part of our family. It was truly meant to be. Thank you SoHumane for all your hard work in taking good care of our boy during his stay with you until his day of adoption. –The Main Family
