Contrary to State catechism delivered through our schools, America was not born a democracy; rather it emerged as a republic with a distinct bias against democracy. Nonetheless we inherit a great demotic heritage. Abolition, the labor struggle, women’s suffrage, and Civil Rights, for example, struck mighty blows against the established political and economic power of the State. State political economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, each express characteristics of a slave society. All feature oppression, exploitation, starvation, and destitution as constitutive elements. In order to survive in our capitalist society, the average person must sell the contents of her life in exchange for a wage. Fundamentally, I challenge the equation of State schooling with public and/or democratic education. Our schools have not historically belonged to a democratic public. Rather, they have been created, funded, and managed by an elite class wielding local, state, and federal government as its executive arms. Schools are economic institutions, serving a division of labor in the reproduction of the larger economy. Rather than the school, our workplaces are the chief educational institutions of our lives. -

He entered the music industry at a tender age of 4 and started playing piano at the age of 8. With both parents as singers, Steven received an encouraging atmosphere to hone his God-gifted musical talents. Steven Hickerson is revered as an up and coming singer, songwriter, producer in the Gospel and Christian music industry. He is currently living in Atlanta, GA as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hickerson is becoming a great contender in the ranks. Born to Sterling Sr. and Selena Hickerson, his parents immediately identified Steven’s talent when he began singing in the middle of their kitchen, with mom and sister getting in on the act. His grandmother was the first to notice that this musical child is a born singer. Among all genres, he chose to dedicate his musical services to inspire others through inspirational gospel and worship music. Steven was entitled as a chameleon artist and the “Minister of Music” at the age of 15. At the age of 12, Steven was directing choirs and performing at the 2nd Mount Calvary at the New Orleans. With numerous awards throughout his early age, Hickerson continued to receive accolades in high school and beyond. Later, Steven worked in the movie “Treasure in the Hood" starring Katt Williams, Reynaldo Rey, Todd Bridges and others. -

Overview CHAPTER 1 of Race and Crime Because skin color is socially constructed, it can also be reconstructed. Thus, when the descendants of the European immigrants began to move up economically and socially, their skins apparently began to look lighter to the whites who had come to America before them. When enough of these descendants became visibly middle class, their skin was seen as fully white. The biological skin color of the second and third generations had not changed, but it was socially blanched or whitened. —Herbert J. Gans (2005) t a time when the United States is more diverse than ever, with the minority popula- tion topping 100 million (one in every three U.S. residents; U.S. Census Bureau, 2010), the notion of race seems to permeate almost every facet of American life. A Certainly, one of the more highly charged aspects of the race dialogue relates to crime. Before embarking on an overview of race and crime, we must first set the parameters of the discussion, which include relevant definitions and the scope of our review. When speaking of race, it is always important to remind readers of the history of the concept and some current definitions. The idea of race originated 5,000 years ago in India, but it was also prevalent among the Chinese, Egyptians, and Jews (Gossett, 1963). Although François Bernier (1625–1688) is usually credited with first classifying humans into distinct races, Carolus Linnaeus (1707–1778) invented the first system of categorizing plants and humans. It was, however, Johan Frederich Blumenbach (1752–1840) who developed the first taxonomy of race. -

They made it clear that they possessed certain magical secrets of their profession, but they mentioned them evasively. Now and then they made lofty artistic pronouncements, but they showed a more sincere interest in anecdotes about scenarios that were written on a cuff during a gay supper.... This might well be a description of Hollywood during any period of its cultivated silence on the matter of film-making. Actually, it is Leningrad in 1924, described by Grigori Kozintsev in his memoirs.1 It is so seldom that we are allowed to study the disclosures of a Hollywood film-maker about his medium that I cannot recall the last instance that preceded John Howard Lawson's book. There is no dearth of books about Hollywood, but when did any other book come from there that takes such articulate pride in the art that is-or was-made there? I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other. -

Researches about music’s psychological and physiological effects on people as well as music’s pedagogical value in language teaching and learning have shown interesting results. However, there still remains a dearth of empirical studies that look into the purported meanings of songs unearthed through linguistic lenses. This study, therefore, examines the intersection of music and linguistics by conducting a lexico-semantic analysis of 30 indie songs written in English by three Filipino indie musicians. One key finding is that indie songs are not usually unclear contrary to the popular belief that they generally tend to be nebulous and require deliberate disambiguation. © 2018 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS.
