The “Cinderella effect”: Elevated mistreatment of stepchildren in comparison to those living with genetic parents. Martin Daly & Margo Wilson Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario, Canada L8S 4K1 <[email protected]> <[email protected]> Theory Parents commit a huge amount of time, attention and material resources to the care of their children, as well as incurring life-threatening risks to defend them and bodily depletion to nourish them. Why are parents motivated to invest so heavily in their children? From an evolutionary perspective, the answer is surely that natural selection has favoured intensive parental care in our lineage. Those ancestral genotypes and phenotypes that best succeeded in raising children to become reproducing adults were the ones that persisted and proliferated. If the psychological underpinnings of parental care have indeed evolved by natural selection, we may furthermore anticipate that parental feeling and action will not typically be elicited by just any random conspecific juvenile. Instead, care-providing animals may be expected to direct their care selectively towards young who are (a) their own genetic offspring rather than those of their reproductive rivals, and (b) able to convert parental investment into increased prospects for survival and reproduction. This is the kernel of the theory of discriminative parental solicitude, which (notwithstanding some interesting twists and caveats) has been abundantly verified in a broad range of care-giving species -

Intro Brothers and Sisters, St. Teresa of Avila’s most famous work is titled the “Interior Castle.” In it, she depicts spiritual growth as a difficult journey through SEVEN STAGES deeper and deeper inside the Castle. The Goal is to enter the innermost chamber of the Castle, where she encounters the One she calls “His Majesty.” One begins with friendship with the Lord Jesus, and ends in betrothal or marriage to Christ. With all this talk of castles, a difficult path there, and marrying royalty, my mind could not help but turn to the Fairy Tale Cinderella. Seriously now, Cinderella’s path to meet Prince Charming, marry him, and live “happily ever after” is not a bad way to envision our own Faith journey; though our goal is not Prince Charming, but the “Prince of Peace” Jesus Christ. Follow me now: II. Initial Stages Stage 1 Cinderella had a blissful early childhood. Although her mother has passed away, she lived securely in a beautiful Chateau with her doting father. Life was simple and happy as a child. She knew she was loved and destined for a content life. Although certainly not all of us had good parents, most of us were brought up in Faith, a simple Faith at first: the beginning of the Gospel message, after all, and what we rightly first teach kids, is God’s immense love for us; that we are called to friendship with God now, and destined to live with Him forever in heaven. THIS IS THE FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH ABOUT WHO YOU ARE, GOD’S LOVE & YOUR DIGNITY and DESTINY. -

MONTAGE OF SCENES - Shots of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge. - SANITATION WORKERS are throwing heavy garbage bags into the backs of their trucks. - COMMUTERS on the train are zoned out, some sleeping, some watching movies on their phones or listening to music. - STORE OWNERS sweeping the sidewalks in front of their businesses. NARRATOR (V.O.) (English accent) Once upon a time in the most lit borough of them all, Brooklyn of course, cuz if ya don’t know now ya know! Ahem, therein resides our Cinderella but for this re-telling of the classic tale we’ll call her Cyndee that’s C-y-n-d-e-e a bit unconventional yes, but phonetically correct all the same. BACK TO SCENE INT. CYNDEE’S CONDO/LIVING ROOM - DAY CYNDEE (early 20s, little to no backbone) is in her cramped bedroom buried under a pile of clothes, she rolls over and the sun shines in her face so she burrows back under her clothes. NARRATOR (V.O.) Oh, dear, she is quite a messy little moppet. With the story beginning where the original ended — during the wedding celebration of Cinderella and Prince Charming — good fortune takes a turn when a new character, evil Fairy Godfather Franco DiFortunato, enters the picture on behalf of Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s stepmother. Granting Lady Tremaine’s wish, he sends the family back in time to break Cinderella’s glass slipper, thus destroying her chances of marrying the prince and writing a whole new story for Cinderella. The 52-minute production features a rich musical score with six original compositions and two classic Disney songs including the beloved “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” and “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” With an accomplished cast, lavish costumes, elaborate set designs and special effects that cleverly turn back the pages of time, the combination seamlessly transitions the show from scene to scene. This paper proposes to explore the aspect of age as intersecting with gender through the villainesses in six of Disney’s popular animated films: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Cinderella (1950), Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Little Mermaid (1989), Tangled (2010), and Frozen (2013). How Disney alters the actions of major and minor characters, and the construction of aging female characters and the key characteristics they exhibit during their fight for eternal youth, beauty, and social and political power will be analyzed, attempting to show how Disney is not a harmless substitute for a babysitter for children. It would take Disney 14 years before the first animated feature-length version of Snow White was released. The film’s phenomenal success at the time (earning eight million dollars on its initial release and winning a full-size Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones) signaled the beginning of a golden age of animation and a rising influence of the Disney movies, brand, and theme parks. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study It was amazing and amusing when in my childhood listen the fable story of Sang Kancil and its series (the mouse deer) as the most popular children stories in my childhood. This story firstly was undocumented and it was told orally from the parents to their children. Such the traditional story shows the traditional setting of culture, custom, and nature as well. The jungle, the river and the farm field characterizes the setting of story. While the crocodile, snail, tiger, elephant, farmer, and the mouse deer itself became the characters in the story. It firmly depicts the influence of culture and nature to the traditional children stories. Being Sang Kancil (the mouse deer) is the well - known story for children, mostly it was told every day before the children were slept by the parents. Consequently, the following day, the children discussion in the school will talk of the abundance of this story, discussing the smartness of the mouse deer, laughing at the elephant’s silliness, crocodile’s confusion, and tiger stupidity, chatting how could the mouse deer cheat them and so forth. The simple discussion of the children dealing with the story is always about the amusement, funny, and entertaining simple topics. Attending the children to listen the stories will emerge two kinds of possibilities, first they will be laughing and happy and perhaps secondly, they will yawn as the reaction of their boredom. It is the natural response and honest expression from the children from the entire world in acquainted with the interesting and uninteresting of the stories that they have heard.
