Edge Ground Cobbles (24CB777) 130 viii CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Area Defined The area of study with which I was concerned for my thesis study is geographically located approximately 35 miles south of Billings, Montana. The Pryor Mountain complex lies on an East-West axis and is approximately 15 miles wide and 25 miles long. Although the mountain range is found primarily in Montana it slopes downward toward the south into Wyoming. The Pryor Mountains are made up of five ecological zones wliich are a function of altitude: one, dry-lands (semi-desert); two, grasslands; three, juniper breaks; four, conifer forest; and five, sub-alpine. Although much archaeological research has been accomplished in four of the five zones, little research has been accomplished in the sub-alpine zone. My area of study, the sub-alpine zone, is located on or near the top of the mountains at a maximum elevation of 8,400 feet. The area was chosen for study for the following reasons: 1. Since most of the Pryor area will become a national recreation area it is important to gain as much archaeological knowledge of the area as possible before it is vandalized. 2. It is important to understand the sub-alpine zone so the occupation within the area can be correlated with occupations of other zones, thus making possible a better understanding of the movements of people in the Pryor Mountains and their exploitation of available resources. 3. The. sub-alpine zone may have played an important role in trie survival of pre-historic people during an Altitheirmal period, thus it is important to investigate the incidence of sites associated with the Middle Pre-Historic Period. Acting as field supervisor during the 19 70 and 19 71 seasons for the Pryor Mountain Archaeological Survey Team, I conducted a survey and excavation of sites within the sub-alpine zone. The information gathered during these two seasons and subsequent research is the basic for this thesis. One problem developing out of the project was for me to reconstruct the lifeway of the people who utilized the sub-alpine zone during the summer months. This construction involved my making assessment of archaeological sites and a synthesis of the cultural data that

    Laramide basement deformation in the northern Gallatin Range and southern Bridger Range, southwest Montana by Erick WB Miller A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Sciences Montana State University © Copyright by Erick WB Miller (1987) Abstract: The mechanical response of Archean "basement" rocks in the cores of Laramide uplifts has received experimental attention, but there have been relatively few field studies documenting Laramide basement behavior. The purpose of this study is to field test existing theoretical basement strain models by documenting the geometry and kinematics of deformation in areas of good exposures. Field studies along well exposed Squaw Creek fault and Canyon Mountain anticline, Gallatin Range, and three anticlines of the southern Bridget Range, southwest Montana, were made by comparing foliations, mesoscopic faults, and slickensides found in basement rocks to Laramide features found in the overlying Cambrian strata. The results show that in regions where the angle of discordance between the base of the Cambrian and Archean metamorphic foliation surfaces was low (Bridget Range anticlines and Canyon Mountain anticline), the basement deformed by oblique flexural-slip on preexisting foliation surfaces. Passive-slip was important in regions where Archean folds blocked foliation parallel slip. Large (12 meter thick) internally undeformed blocks indicate break up of the folded layer into macrogranular segments was preferred over coherent deformation. Deformation in bounding shear zones occurred under sub-greenschist conditions. Decreased grain size and increased fluid influx accompanied a transition from mechanical fracturing and frictional sliding to pressure solution slip. These observations indicate a fold strain model and are compatible with the fold-thrust model (Berg, 1962).

    STORCK: REVIEW OF ONTARIO PALEO-INDIAN 3 RESEARCH INTO THE PALEO-INDIAN OCCUPATIONS OF ONTARIO: A REVIEW Peter L. Storck ABSTRACT Research into the Early Paleo-Indian (fluted point) cultures in Ontario has virtually exploded in the past 15 years. Two long-term projects initiated in the early 1970's and a number of shorter projects conducted over the last seven years have identified several fluted point complexes and produced information on lithic technology, community and settlement patterns, the direction and perhaps seasonal aspects of band movements, and "special activities" of possibly a ceremonial nature. Research into Late Paleo-Indian or Plano cultures has continued at a steady pace in northwestern Ontario since the pioneering work of MacNeish in the 1950's. As a result, a major Late Paleo-Indian manifestation — the Lakehead Complex — has been identified. In southern Ontario, interest in Late Paleo-Indian occupations has increased within the past five to seven years with the discovery of Agate Basin and Hell Gap related material representing population movements ultimately derived from the Plains. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarize recent research on the Paleo-Indian occupation of Ontario which occurred after the final retreat of the ice sheet between perhaps 7000 and 11,500 years ago. This brief survey of Early Man research in Ontario is also intended to indicate the amount of work that has and is being done, the variety of approaches that are being taken both in the fieldwork and in the analysis of the material, the range of ideas that are being explored, and the potential of the research for bearing on problems of national and international interest.

    The Nature of Prehistory In Colorado, mountains ascended past clouds and were eroded to valleys, salty seas flooded our land and were dried to powder or rested on us as freshwater ice, plants rose from wet algae to dry forests and flowers, animals transformed from a single cell to frantic dinosaurs and later, having rotated around a genetic rocket, into sly mammals. No human saw this until a time so very recent that we were the latest model of Homo sapiens and already isolated from much of the terror of that natural world by our human cultures' perceptual permutations and re­ flections. We people came late to Colorado. The first humans, in the over one hundred thousand square miles of what we now call Colorado, saw a landscape partitioned not by political fences or the orthogonal architecture of wall, floor, and roadway, but by gradations in game abundance, time to water, the supply of burnables, shelter from vagaries of atmosphere and spirit, and a pedestrian's rubric of distance and season. We people came as foragers and hunters to Colorado. We have lived here only for some one hundred fifty centuries-not a long time when compared to the fifty thousand centuries that the Euro­ pean, African, and Asian land masses have had us and our immediate prehuman ancestors. It is not long compared to the fifty million cen­ turies of life on the planet. We humans, even the earliest prehistoric The Na ture of Prehistory 3 societies, are all colonists in Colorado. And, except for the recent pass­ ing of a mascara of ice and rain, we have not been here long enough to see, or study, her changing face.
