3 US Jaycees National Convention San Diego, CA September 25 – 28, 2008 By: Heather Snyder

Wow! What an exciting trip I had to The US Junior Chamber Annual Meeting (also known as National Convention) in San Diego, CA the end of September. As most of you know, I attended as a competitor in the Individual Development Competition of Jaycee Jeopardy. Jaycee Jeopardy is a competition based on the history of the Jaycees. I learned so much about the Jaycees and myself through this experience. Not to mention, Paul you are not the only one that can spout off some Jaycee history.

The Convention was not just about the competitions, it was so much more – we had a weekend full of activities. Thursday started off with the competitions and ended the day with the Opening Ceremonies and Welcome Party. At the Opening Heather receives her award from US Jaycee President Denice O’Neill Ceremonies they announced the winners from the competitions and you’ll be glad to know that I received Second Place! Friday and Saturday were full of trainings and meetings. The trainings were about an hour long each and consisted of various topics – the best were Effective Communication and Negotiating Effectively.

They also held the elections for the 2009 Executive Board. It was very exciting to have two candidates, Chris Hardee and Joanie Cramer, from North Carolina running for National Vice President. It was so exciting to hear that one of our own North Carolinians, Joanie Cramer was elected as National Vice President. The weekend ended with the TOYA (Ten Outstanding Young Americans) banquet. It was amazing meeting and watching these peers receive such a prestigious award for the service they have done in their communities and around the world. I also want to thank the Board of Directors for allowing me to attend this Convention. Raleigh in the House! Heather, Chris Hardee, and Gwen Schott

Raleigh Jaycees Celebrate Tradition of Community Service and Involvement with Opening of Annual Turkey Shoot and Haunted House RALEIGH, N.C. — Recognizing the Raleigh Jaycees’ years of community service and involvement, Mayor Charles Meeker proclaimed the week of October 12-18 as Raleigh Jaycees Week. Raleigh Jaycees Week is held in conjunction with Junior Chamber Mission Week, established in 1929 in celebration of the founding of the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees). “The members of the Raleigh Jaycees are proud to be a part of an organization that has served our area for over 75 years, and the chapter is honored to be recognized by the city we serve,” said the Raleigh Jaycees’ president, Paul Hoover IV. “We believe that our community is one of the finest places to live in the country and The Raleigh Jaycees are proud of the role our organization has played in helping to train our community’s past and present leaders and of our history of service to its underprivileged.” Founded in 1932, the Raleigh Jaycees provided opportunities for young men to develop personal and leadership skills through service to others. The chapter later expanded to include women, reflecting the growing influence and leadership of women in America. Today the chapter continues to be an integral part of the Raleigh community as an all-volunteer civic organization that runs over 100 community service and leadership development projects each year. Through its projects, the Raleigh Jaycees raise over $65,000 annually that goes back into the community. The impact of the projects the Raleigh Jaycees run in the Triangle area spans a wide variety of community groups and organizations through hosting the N.C. Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar and a national Protect Our Nation’s Youth (PONY) fast pitch softball tournament, the annual Halloween season haunted house, Christmas holiday event Goodfellows and through the running of the annual turkey shoot at the North Carolina State Fair. In addition, the Raleigh Jaycees continue its support of the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center at UNC, the N.C. Jaycee Outpatient Treatment Facility at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina at Lake Waccamaw and multiple other charities across the community and state. The Raleigh Jaycees will celebrate the week with the opening of two of their flagship projects, the turkey shoot, which opens as a part of at the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 16 and its annual haunted house, opening Oct. 17 in Pleasant Valley Promenade shopping center. Since 1952 the Raleigh Jaycees have offered a safe and fun environment for the general public to experience shooting a 20-gauge shotgun at the North Carolina State Fair with its turkey shoot, which is the longest running game at the fair. The event began as a fundraiser to raise money to build the Jaycee City Park in Raleigh, N.C. and today raises money to continue the work of the Raleigh Jaycees in the community. Participants have the chance to win a frozen turkey or a commemorative t-shirt. The Raleigh Jaycees’ turkey shoot is located on the N.C. State Fairgrounds next to the expo center. For more than 35 years the Raleigh Jaycees have been bringing the Halloween spirit to the Triangle with their haunted house, and will continue the tradition with this year’s haunted house, Terror at Possum Creek: The Penitentiary. All proceeds from the Raleigh Jaycees’ haunted house will be donated to area charities. The haunted house will be held at 6234 Glenwood Ave. #112. A complete schedule of events and ticket information for the haunted house is available at www.terroratpossumcreek.com. “We are very excited to celebrate Jaycee week as we prepare for our chapter’s busiest time of year,” said Hoover. “Our chapter will continue decades of tradition as we run our haunted house and turkey shoot during the month of October. These projects will allow us to raise money to give underprivileged children a special Christmas, support burn survivors at the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center, provide furnishings for the Jaycee Cottage at the Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw and much more.”
