(Rita Felski) Because of the formal undefinability of literary fiction – a non-generic genre – genre becomes a dynamic and mutable property of its marketing, in which fashions change and shape literary taste, and novels (and indeed works of non-fiction) which are situated at the borders of literary and other genres offer some of the most revealing sites of negotiation to the analyst. (Claire Squires) 1 Dette motto er tyvstjålet fra Gérard Genettes Figures of Literary Discourse, der altså også klinger med. Man kan tale om en paratekst i anden potens. 3 Indhold 1. Defending Defending Oslo 8–11 August 2013 Democracy The 2013 NordMedia conference in Oslo marked the 40 years that had passed since the very first Nordic media conference. To acknowledge this 40-year anniversary, it made sense to have a conference theme that dealt with a major and important topic: Defending Democracy. Nordic Defending and Global Diversities in Media and Journalism. Focusing on the rela- tionship between journalism, other media practices and democracy, the plenary sessions raised questions such as: Democracy & Edited by What roles do media and journalism play in democratization • Kristin Skare Orgeret processes and what roles should they play? Nordic and Global Diversities How does the increasingly complex and omnipresent media in Media and Journalism • Hornmoen Harald field affect conditions for freedom of speech? • Contradiction Leads to a Miracle a Rethinking of Hans Christian Anderson and His Fairy Tales
Vol. 1, No. 2 Review of European Studies Contradiction Leads to a Miracle A Rethinking of Hans Christian Anderson and His Fairy Tales Ruizhen Feng School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University 301 Xuefu Road, Zhenjiang 212013, China Tel: 86-511-8879-1205 E-mail: [email protected] The research is financed by the Department of Science and Technology, Jiangsu University, China. (Project Code No. JDR 2008B07.) Abstract Hans Christian Anderson is the most renowned fairy tale masters throughout the history. His works have been translated into different languages and spread all over the world. This paper intends to discuss Anderson’s works via a review of newly obtained literature relevant to his works. There is contradiction between Anderson’s actual life and dreams; both the natural revelation of children’s spirit and the profound expression of adults’ thinking contrastively exist in his works; not only the casual style in folk writing but also the poetic creation of literature are simultaneously employed in his works. These three aspects are contradictory but also uniform as well in Anderson. It is just in this contradiction and unity that Andersen’s works can be so splendid and simple, so bright and profound. Based on the above reason, the author points out that Anderson’s success is by no means an accidental phenomenon and his works can not be interpreted in a narrow sense as just fairy tales only for children, they have a profound influence on the adult literature. Keywords: Hans Christian Anderson, Contradiction, Fairy tales 1. Introduction Hans Christian Anderson, a Danish poet, novelist, and an immortal storyteller, was Denmark's most famous figure.

  • “De Standhaftige Slaveejere” Radka Stah
2020 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 23–38 PHILOLOGICA 1 / 2020 TO ELLER TRE ENGLÆNDERINDER? COURBETS MALERI SOM IDÉIMPULS FOR BLIXENS FORTÆLLING “DE STANDHAFTIGE SLAVEEJERE” RADKA STAHR ABSTRACT In her short stories, Karen Blixen often uses fine art as a model for describ- ing characters or landscapes. When analyzing these references, research- ers face a basic problem in many cases: how can one prove that the author meant a particular artefact when it is not explicitly mentioned in the text? Only in one case does Blixen offer us a specific indication – in the essay “Til fire kultegninger” she writes that the basic motif of the short story “De standhaftige Slaveejere” was Courbet’s painting of two young English- women. This article deals with the specific reflection of Courbet’s painting Three Young Englishwomen by a Window in this short story and reveals the way the painting is reflected in the text. The analysis shows that the description corresponds to the appearance of the characters in the picture only partially; the author completes and changes the description accord- ing to her own imagination to adjust it to the plot of the short story. In this respect, the narrative potential of ekphrasis comes to the fore. However, it is not a classic narrative impulse, as formulated by Heffernan, but rather a “conceptual impulse”. The painting actually serves Blixen as a basis for a subjective idea, upon which she develops the storyline. An interesting role in this case is played by the fact that there are three Englishwomen in Courbet’s painting, while Blixen mentions only two.

Janet Garton is Emeritus Professor of European Literature at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, where she taught Scandinavian Literature and Languages 1969-2008. She has an MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge.
