Defending Defending Oslo 8–11 August 2013 Democracy The 2013 NordMedia conference in Oslo marked the 40 years that had passed since the very first Nordic media conference. To acknowledge this 40-year anniversary, it made sense to have a conference theme that dealt with a major and important topic: Defending Democracy. Nordic Defending and Global Diversities in Media and Journalism. Focusing on the rela- tionship between journalism, other media practices and democracy, the plenary sessions raised questions such as: Democracy & Edited by What roles do media and journalism play in democratization • Kristin Skare Orgeret processes and what roles should they play? Nordic and Global Diversities How does the increasingly complex and omnipresent media in Media and Journalism • Hornmoen Harald field affect conditions for freedom of speech? This special issue contains the keynote speeches of Natalie Fenton, Stephen Ward and Ib Bondebjerg. A number of the conference papers have been revised and edited to become articles. • “De Standhaftige Slaveejere” Radka Stah
2020 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 23–38 PHILOLOGICA 1 / 2020 TO ELLER TRE ENGLÆNDERINDER? COURBETS MALERI SOM IDÉIMPULS FOR BLIXENS FORTÆLLING “DE STANDHAFTIGE SLAVEEJERE” RADKA STAHR ABSTRACT In her short stories, Karen Blixen often uses fine art as a model for describ- ing characters or landscapes. When analyzing these references, research- ers face a basic problem in many cases: how can one prove that the author meant a particular artefact when it is not explicitly mentioned in the text? Only in one case does Blixen offer us a specific indication – in the essay “Til fire kultegninger” she writes that the basic motif of the short story “De standhaftige Slaveejere” was Courbet’s painting of two young English- women. This article deals with the specific reflection of Courbet’s painting Three Young Englishwomen by a Window in this short story and reveals the way the painting is reflected in the text. The analysis shows that the description corresponds to the appearance of the characters in the picture only partially; the author completes and changes the description accord- ing to her own imagination to adjust it to the plot of the short story. In this respect, the narrative potential of ekphrasis comes to the fore. However, it is not a classic narrative impulse, as formulated by Heffernan, but rather a “conceptual impulse”. The painting actually serves Blixen as a basis for a subjective idea, upon which she develops the storyline. An interesting role in this case is played by the fact that there are three Englishwomen in Courbet’s painting, while Blixen mentions only two.

Danes in North America Reviewed by MARION MARZOLF Edited by Frederick Hale (University of Washington Press, Seattle, 1984), pp. 256, $19.95. The story of immigration is a human story, of partings and arrivals, hopes and dreams, disappoint ments and satisfactions. The reader of immigrant letters has the tantalizing opportunity to peek into the hearts and minds of pioneers who settled the North American farmlands and participated in the growth of cities and factories. The letters were not intended for our eyes. They were written to loved ones back home, and we can only guess at what was left unsaid or glossed over. Some letters passed from hand to hand and others were published in the local newspapers, contributing to the genre of the "America letter," which scholars agree contributed to the migration impulse in Scandinavia and elswhere. The reader shares for a moment the joy of arrival, the funny anecdotes that turn on the green horn 's inexperience in a new land, the detailed descrip tions of new towns and workplaces , the pride of achievements made in a few short months or years, and the tug of longing for an aging parent left behind.

  • Nordicom Information 2014(2)
Nordicom Review 35 (2014) Special Issue, pp. 7-8 Foreword The media and communication research associations of the Nordic countries in co- operation with Nordicom have held conferences every second year since 1973. The 21th conference in the series was held in Oslo, Norway, 8th-10th August 2013. Host for the conference was the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo and Akershus University College. The NordMedia conference 2013 in Oslo marked and celebrated the 40 years that have passed since that very first Nordic media conference. These Nordic conferences have without doubt contributed greatly to the development of media and communication research in the Nordic countries. About 350 scholars from Denmark (59), Finland (48), Iceland (3), Norway (58) and Sweden (70) gathered to discuss current research and findings. In addition, some participants came from further afield, from Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, the USA, etc. The conference proceedings included plenary sessions with keynote speakers and thematic seminars in different divisions and working groups. Participants also enjoyed a number of social gatherings and cultural events. The theme of the plenary sessions this year was Defending Democracy. Nordic and Global Diversities in Media and Journalism. This special issue of Nordicom Review and Nordicom-Information contains the speeches held in plenary sessions regarding this theme. As usual, the main business of the conference took place in the sessions of the differ- ent divisions. More than 270 research papers were presented in 12 divisions: Environ- ment, Science and Risk Communication; Journalism Studies; Media and Communication History; Media, Culture and Society; Media, Globalization and Social Change; Media Literacy and Media Education; Media Management, Policy and Economy; Media, Technology and Aesthetics; Film Studies; Organization, Communication and Society; Political Communication; and Theory, Philosophy and Ethics of Communication.

(Jean-Marie Schaeffer) Any attempt to clarify the value of literature must surely engage the diverse motives of readers and ponder the mysterious event of reading, yet contemporary theories give us poor guidance on such questions. We are sorely in need of richer and deeper accounts of how selves interact with texts.

  • Oversættelse Af Fantasylitteratur – En Fantastisk Disciplin?
Kandidatafhandling, Copenhagen Business School Cand.ling.merc./Tolk og translatør, engelsk December 2013 Specialeskriver: Vejleder: Anders Bjerrum Kristian Tangsgaard Hvelplund Anslag: 171.000 (75 sider) Københavns Universitet Institut for Engelsk, Germansk og Romansk Oversættelse af fantasylitteratur – en fantastisk disciplin? En empirisk og eksplorativ undersøgelse af generelle udfordringer og løsninger ifm. oversættelse fra engelsk til dansk af stednavne, væsner, racer og arkaisk sprogbrugi tre udvalgte fantasybøger Empirical and explorative study of the translation of fantasy literature from English to Danish This thesis examines general challenges in relation to the translation of three genre-specific features in fantasy literature, which are creatures and races, archaic language and placenames with particular focus on the latter. This includes an assessment of the Danish translations as well as proposed translation alternatives. This study is conducted on the basis of three theoretical concepts the first being macrostrategies, which determine the translator's overall strategy, whereas the second concept of microstrategies specifically indicate how or by which means a term is translated. The last concept is deforming tendencies used to demonstrate potential losses in terms of form and content in the Danish translation. The data consist of an extensive collection of fantasy-related terms from three different fantasy novels. The theoretical concepts are applied to a selection of the most frequent place names in order to determine if particular place names are translated in a particular way possibly resulting in a particular loss as described above. The study found that achieving equivalent effect in translation of fantasy literature is a general challenge, especially in regard to place names which are derivations of words from English, Celtic, Old Norse etc.
