SOS PADILLA AND GARCETTI, VILLARAIGOSA & STEINBERG SIGN THE PLEDGE TO OPPOSE LEGISLATION AIMED AT HURTING WORKING AMERICANS

At the Democratic Convention this weekend, attendees including three mayors and a constitutional officer lined up to take the pledge against RTW schemes.

Sacramento, CA –WE ARE ONE BIG UNION attended the Democratic Convention this past weekend to inform convention-goers of the looming threat of so-called “right to work” or RTW legislation. Two bills have already been introduced in Congress seeking to hamstring organized labors’ ability to organize and advocate on behalf of all working Americans.

Among the multitudes that took the pledge this weekend, gubernatorial hopeful and former of took the pledge joined by current Los Angeles Mayor . Additionally, Mayor of Sacramento and Secretary of State took the pledge along with state senators and assembly people from around who joined the thousands of others and pledged to:

“[I] Stand with the working families of the of America and oppose any attempts to weaken our lawful right to organize or advocate for the rights of workers. As such, [I] oppose any attempts to advance so called ‘right to work’ legislation in Congress or otherwise.”

Randy Cammack, President of Teamsters Joint Council 42 that represents nearly a quarter of a million active and retired Teamsters, said “we are happy that this fight will include some of California’s most distinguished leaders including Mayors Villaraigosa, Garcetti and Steinberg and Secretary of State Padilla, we have to build an army to protect all American workers and we will need respected voices like theirs to join in with the thousands of working Americans we have already assembled.”

RTW legislation has been enacted in 28 states so years of analysis of the economic effect exist. An on going study by EPI shows that states that enact RTW suffer from decreased wages and school funding and increased work place casualties and poverty.
