    BPJ 410 – Final Report Continuous Improvement Project: Filter Manufacturing Department at BAT in Heidelberg Benito Decina s28345186 Executive Summary Production industries are subject to the ebb and flow of demand and supply fluctuations, with an increase in a product’s demand driving up the supplier’s production. At BAT’s factory in Heidelberg, the Filter Manufacturing Department is currently operating at nothing more than 75% efficiency, and is the bottleneck in BAT’s production process. If BAT plans to keep up with the increase in consumer demand, improvement is needed. To achieve a more acceptable production efficiency of about 85 to 95%, blockages hindering filter supply need to be minimised, changeover times reduced, and waste production needs to be kept to a minimal. The only way to achieve this objective would be to analyse the current layout, identify its flaws and areas of improvement, and then implement a new layout that would improve the department’s performance and complement future objectives. With the aid of simulation models, information is retrieved to determine the extent of improvements the proposed layout will be able to provide. The freed up floor space created by the proposed layout design will also be looked at to determine its best possible use. The information gathered from the simulations as well as the available floor space will provide a clear indication of the viability of the proposed layout. i Table of Contents 1.     SMOKING AND QUITTING BEHAVIOUR IN LOCKDOWN SOUTH AFRICA: RESULTS FROM A SECOND SURVEY Professor Corné van Walbeek Samantha Filby Kirsten van der Zee 21 July 2020 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report is based on the results of an online survey, conducted between 4 June and 19 June 2020. The study was conducted by the Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP), an independent research unit based at the University of Cape Town. It was funded by the African Capacity Building Foundation, which in turn is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This report follows on from our first report entitled “Lighting up the illicit cigarette market: Smokers’ responses to the cigarette sales ban in South Africa”, which was published on 15 May 2020. That report was based on an online survey conducted between 29 April and 11 May 2020. When the second survey was conducted, the ban on the sales of cigarettes had been extended, even as the country had moved from lockdown Level 4 to Level 3. The questionnaire was distributed on Twitter, Change.org (a petition site) and Moya (a data-free platform). The survey yielded 23 631 usable responses. In contrast to the first study, we did not weigh the data, because the sampling methodology (i.e. online survey) made it impossible to reach the poorer segments of society. We thus do not claim that the data is nationally representative; we report on the characteristics of the sample, not the South African smoking population. In the report we often report the findings by race and gender, because smoking behaviour in South Africa has very pronounced race-gender differences.

    FEATURE A Reconstruction of the Differential Analyzer in Meccano The challenges of torque amplifiers, integrators, and backlash By Tim Robinson was first introduced to Meccano, a child’s educational construction set cre- ated in the United Kingdom, at about the age of six and quickly became fascinated with it as a medium for constructing working mechanisms and small machines. Over the next ten years or so, I gath- Iered quite a large collection. I first attempted to construct a differential analyzer in Meccano around 1971. I had just encountered calculus in high school and at the same time I started to develop an interest in computers. One of the first books I read on computers included a chapter on analog computation, and on the differential analyz- er in particular. Significantly, the book briefly men- ©DIGITALVISION tioned that simple differential analyzers had been constructed in Meccano in the 1930s. So began an inter- est that has remained with me for more than 30 years. Early Attempts My early attempts were not very successful because of the diffi- culty of constructing functioning torque amplifiers. When Hartree and Porter built the first Meccano differential analyzer at Manchester Universi- ty, their goal was to build a working machine quickly. They used Meccano simply because it was readily available and allowed them to avoid designing and custom machining most of the required parts. However, Hartree and Porter felt no constraint to stay within the limits of the Meccano system. In particular, they did not believe that adequate torque amplifiers could be made without custom machining.

They were both the same radio. RS1 being fully built and RS2 being a kit. There were certain objections of infringement from the G.P.O. about the original sets concerning experimental receiving sets which required an additional ‘experimental license fee of 15 shillings, in addition to the normal Broadcast license fee of 10 shilling.     Foreword In response to Congress’ passage of the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990 and subsequent acts that amended the directive, the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program collects and publishes data on crimes motivated by racial, religious, ethnicity/national-origin, sexual-orientation, and disability bias. In 2001, 9,730 bias-motivated incidents were voluntarily reported by law enforcement agencies nationwide. From the fi rst year that national hate crime data were published in 1992 until 2000, incidents motivated by racial bias comprised the largest portion of reported hate crime incidents followed by incidents motivated by a religious bias and those motivated by bias against sexual orientation. The fewest number of hate crime incidents resulted from ethnicity or national-origin bias, until the addition of the disability bias in 1997, which then became the lowest portion of reported hate crime incidents. That distribution changed in 2001, presumably as a result of the heinous incidents that occurred on September 11. For many offenders, the preformed negative opinion, or bias, was directed toward ethnicity/ national origin. Consistent with past data, by bias type, law enforcement reported that most incidents in 2001 were motivated by bias against race. However, crime incidents motivated by bias against ethnicity/national origin were the second most frequently reported bias in 2001, more than doubling the number of incidents, offenses, victims, and known offenders from 2000 data. Additionally, the anti-other ethnicity/national origin category quadrupled in incidents, offenses, victims, and known offenders. Another noticeable increase in 2001 was among religious-bias incidents. Anti-Islamic religion incidents were previously the second least reported, but in 2001, they became the second highest reported among religious-bias incidents (anti-Jewish religion incidents were the highest), growing by more than 1,600 percent over the 2000 volume.
