  • The Collecting, Dealing and Patronage Practices of Gaspare Roomer
ART AND BUSINESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NAPLES: THE COLLECTING, DEALING AND PATRONAGE PRACTICES OF GASPARE ROOMER by Chantelle Lepine-Cercone A thesis submitted to the Department of Art History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright ©Chantelle Lepine-Cercone, 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the cultural influence of the seventeenth-century Flemish merchant Gaspare Roomer, who lived in Naples from 1616 until 1674. Specifically, it explores his art dealing, collecting and patronage activities, which exerted a notable influence on Neapolitan society. Using bank documents, letters, artist biographies and guidebooks, Roomer’s practices as an art dealer are studied and his importance as a major figure in the artistic exchange between Northern and Sourthern Europe is elucidated. His collection is primarily reconstructed using inventories, wills and artist biographies. Through this examination, Roomer emerges as one of Naples’ most prominent collectors of landscapes, still lifes and battle scenes, in addition to being a sophisticated collector of history paintings. The merchant’s relationship to the Spanish viceregal government of Naples is also discussed, as are his contributions to charity. Giving paintings to notable individuals and large donations to religious institutions were another way in which Roomer exacted influence. This study of Roomer’s cultural importance is comprehensive, exploring both Northern and Southern European sources. Through extensive use of primary source material, the full extent of Roomer’s art dealing, collecting and patronage practices are thoroughly examined. ii Acknowledgements I am deeply thankful to my thesis supervisor, Dr. Sebastian Schütze.

  • San Lorenzo Maggiore Is One of the Oldest Churches in Naples. It Stands Between Via Tribunali and Via San Gregorio Armeno, in the Heart of the Greco-Roman City
    24. SAN LORENZO MAGGIORE San Lorenzo Maggiore is one of the oldest churches in Naples. It stands between Via Tribunali and Via San Gregorio Armeno, in the heart of the Greco-roman city. The still visible layers of history within the church’s structure provide ample testimony to the importance of the whole area over the centuries. The Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore is considered one of the most interesting examples of gothic architecture in Naples, even though the Angevin structure was built on top of a pre-existing religious building dating back to V or VI century A.D. The fact that it was founded during the paleochristian period is demonstrated by the imposing Roman columns with bases and capitals in black and white granite or cipollino marble. These were re-used as decoration on the composite columns supporting the pointed arches which mark the entrance to the side chapels in the Angevin church. Some of the capitals were taken directly from the macellum or abattoir which lay below and which corresponded to the food market in Roman times. Remains of this can still be seen, including the walls and the tholos which have been incorporated into the foundations. Legend has it that it was in San Lorenzo that Giovanni Boccaccio used to meet his muse Fiammetta, the beautiful Maria d’Aquino, daughter of the King, Robert of Anjou, after seeing her at mass on Holy Saturday in 1334. Boccaccio described San Lorenzo as a graceful and beautiful temple. It should also be remembered that Francesco Petrarch stayed in the convent for a few days and, on the night of 4 November 1343, when he was terrified by a hermit who predicted a huge storm, he came down from his cell to join the monks in prayer.

  • DIRECTIONS to BAROQUE NAPLES Helen Hills
1 INTRODUCTION: DIRECTIONS TO BAROQUE NAPLES Helen Hills Abstract How have place in Naples and the place of Naples been imagined, chartered, explored, and contested in baroque art, history and literature? This special issue revisits baroque Naples in light of its growing fashionability. After more or less ignoring Naples for decades, scholars are now turning from the well-trodden fields of northern and central Italy to the south. This is, therefore, an opportune moment to reconsider the paradigms according to which scholarship has -- often uncritically – unrolled. How has scholarship kept Naples in its place? How might its place be rethought? Keywords: Naples, baroque, meridionalismo, viceregency, colonialism, Spanish empire, architecture, urbanism, excess, ornament, marble, Vesuvius, Neapolitan baroque art, city and body, Jusepe de Ribera, city views, still-life painting, saints and city, place, displacement Full text: http://openartsjournal.org/issue-6/article-0 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5456/issn.2050-3679/2018w00 Biographical note Helen Hills is Professor of History of Art at the University of York. She taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Manchester before being appointed Anniversary Reader at York. Her research focuses on Italian baroque art and architecture in relation to religion, gender, and social class, exploring how architecture and place are productive and discontinuous, even disjunctive. She has published widely on baroque theory, southern Italian baroque art and architecture; religious

  • S. Maria Del Pianto: Loss, Remembrance and Legacy in Seventeenth Century Naples
    S. Maria Del Pianto: Loss, Remembrance and Legacy In Seventeenth Century Naples by Rebecca Lisabeth Ehlert A thesis submitted to the Department of Art in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada October, 2007 Copyright © Rebecca L. Ehlert, 2007 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the creation of the church of S. Maria del Pianto and its altarpieces commissioned in the wake of the Neapolitan plague of 1656. The church and its sacred images are representative of the devotional shift that occurred in Naples after such catastrophic loss of life – in particular devotion to the souls in Purgatory. An exploration of the church’s commission, the people involved as benefactors, and the significance of the site upon which it was built proved central to the identification of the possible meanings of the altarpieces for their seventeenth-century audience and are examined in detail in this study. i AKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my advisor Sebastian Schütze for pushing me to make this thesis truly my own. His questions, insights and advice, particularly during the editing process, have been invaluable. Also, my sincerest thanks go to David McTavish who kindly filled in as proxy advisor during my defense. I am also indebted to the other committee members: Joan Schwartz, Cathleen Hoeniger, Peter Thompson and Ross Kilpatrick for their interest and support of my work. I am very appreciative of the many friends and colleagues at Queen’s who shared the absurdities and joys of this experience – particularly Susan Cahill, Krista Bennett, Billy Woon, Ann Marie Piekenbrock and Devin Therien.

The present guidebook was prepared for the International Workshop on Advanced Monitoring of Active Volcanoes. It reports information on the Partenopean volcanic area and illustrates the sites visited during the tour. The guidebook synthetically provides information on i) the major morphological and structural features of the volcanoes, ii) the deposits of the eruptions and their impact on the territory, iii) their present state and iv) the geophysical, petrologycal and geochemical networks operating at the Osservatorio Vesuviano. The tour will be devoted to illustrating the intimate relation among natural setting, archeology and urbanization of the high risk and deeply monitored Campi Flegrei and Vesuvius. It also presents the Osservatorio Vesuviano edifice that maintain the memory of the oldest volcanological observatory in the world and the earlier monitoring instruments. The refenceres used in this book will be useful to detail the knowlegde on the Campi Flegrei and Vesuvius volcanic area and to recover other interesting and more focused papers. This guidebook, finally, includes a list of churches and historical buildings, nearby the workshop location and that can be visited during your stay in Naples. Introduction Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei together with Ischia and Procida volcanoes are located in the Campanian Plain, (Fig 1). The Plain is a structural depression delimited by the Southern Apennines mountain chain to the east, south and north, and by the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the west. It is infilled by 2-3,000 m of Plio-Quaternary continental, deltaic, and marine sediments, intercalated with volcanic deposits, as detected by drilling and geophysical surveys (Piochi et al., 2005a and references therein).

To my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has loved me with an everlasting, unconditional love; the One who has called and equipped me for service; the One who is faithful, strong, and true. I dedicate this work to the glory of God that it may transform and equip others to advance Christ’s Great Commission for generations to come. To God, be the glory! Thirty years of my life and ministry are woven into the pages of this thesis. I celebrate and praise God for bringing me to the completion of a milestone that I could only see in the far distance. The good work that the Apostle Paul speaks of began with an inner stirring to create. At the age of 11, while attending a youth retreat, the facilitator handed all of us small pieces of paper and challenged us to write down what we wanted to be in the next five years. Without hesitation, I wrote that I wanted to serve in full-time ministry for the rest of my life.

John studied and taught at the Dominican schools in Naples and Bologna, and at the University of Paris, where he was made a master of theology in 1315. He spent most of the rest of his life in Naples, where he was closely associated with the Angevin court. Chapter 1 surveys John’s life and works, setting his career in its Neapolitan context. Chapters 2-4 deal with different aspects of his teaching. Chapter 2 contrasts his contributions to debates about the nature of theology at Paris with the way he introduced this subject to his Dominican students in Naples. Chapter 3 examines the role of medicine in his theological teaching, where it served as a tool for interpreting core texts as well as a source of material for preaching. Chapter 4 analyzes the symbiotic relationship between his quodlibets and the literature of pastoral care. Chapter 5 looks at John as a Dominican friar and preacher, turning to his sermon collection as a source of information about Dominican life in southern Italy, and Chapter 6 investigates his relationship with the Angevin rulers of Naples and the role of politics and political theory in his works.
