11 th Grade Summer Reading 2013

The English department of PCCA is committed to encouraging a love for reading. We believe this emphasis is important in preparation for life in general and, specifically, for success in high school, pre-college testing, and college itself. The book below has been selected as enrichment reading during the summer months. Read your book carefully and critically, and enjoy it.

English III students - You are required to read The Great Gatsby by F. S. Fitzgerald. Sometime during the first week of school, you will take an objective test on the reading and you will be asked to write an essay discussing the theme(s). To prepare for this essay, I suggest that you note appropriate quotes and page references. English III Honors students - You are required to read The Great Gatsby by F. S. Fitzgerald as well as an extra book of your choice from the following list: James Agee A Farewell to Arms Grapes of Wrath The Handmaid’s Tale Margaret Atwood Jurassic Park Michael Creighton The Song of the Lark Native Son Richard Wright The Awakening Kate Chopin Pearl S. Buck The Joy Luck Club Amy Tan The Last of the Mohicans James Fennimore Cooper The Stand Stephen King

You are required to complete a novel analysis for your book of choice. This document is due upon your return from school. (See rubric below.) All students - To encourage reading, I will give extra credit for each additional book read during the summer. Your parents will need to verify that you did, indeed, read the book.
