Framing the Automobile in Twentieth Century American Literature: a Spatial Approach
SMOAK, SHELBY, Ph.D. Framing the Automobile in Twentieth Century American Literature: A Spatial Approach. (2007) Co-Directed by Dr. Nancy Myers and Dr. Scott Romine, 241 pp. This study examines fictional representations of the automobile in American literature and argues that the American novel subverts a favorable perception of the car. While other approaches have engaged the automobile in critical discussion, I apply Joseph Frank’s spatial theory to propose the automobile as a framed site that recurs throughout texts; this approach allows for a stricter focus on the material automobile in the text and encourages an investigation of the relationship between cars and American culture. The automobile in literature, however, is not a static site, but is dynamic, much in the same manner Roland Barthes theorizes when he argues for opening a text. To highlight the dynamic quality of the textual automobile site, this study focuses on how characters and cars interact in works of American fiction. Specifically, I argue for cars as experiences of violence, sacredness, and consumption. Cars represented as sites of violence involve instances of car fatalities, of premeditated murder, and of a general antagonism toward car technology; cars represented as sites of sacredness involve instances when cars are places of escape and freedom, and where cars are sites of religious idolatry; cars represented as sites of consumption involve instances of when cars are traded, or where cars are places for consuming other goods such as food and beverages. Moreover, particular paradigms predominate in specific periods of American literature, so that in the early decades of the twentieth century, fiction predominantly represents cars as sites of violence; in the middle decades, fiction predominantly represents cars as sites of sacredness; and at the century’s end, fiction predominantly represents cars as sites of sacredness. -

“You May Find Yourselves Changed in Unexpected Ways” Literature and Poverty Law Adam Gearey “[I]n these times of dreary crisis, what is the point of emphasising the horror of being?” Julia Kristeva1 Introduction This paper outlines a tradition of Anglo-American literature that stretches from Jane Addams to Jack London and George Orwell. Locating poverty law scholarship in this tradition of poverty writing has important implications for how we understanding lawyering for the poor and, indeed, for the very idea of law and literature.2 Borrowing the idea of unlearning from Jane Addams, we will show how reading literature is central to the moral task of self- definition.3 It may be that poverty lawyering is best understood as peculiar continuation of a tradition of unlearning that defines the problematic of poverty writing.4 The argument concludes with comments on how the main themes of this essay can be framed as a kind of dialectics that pushes unlearning in the direction of a politics of poverty.5 Our argument begins with the encounter between the ‘middle classes’ and the poor that underpinned the settlement house movement in the latter 1800s. The settlement house movement had its origins in the response of churchmen and university scholars to the social and spiritual degradation of slum life wrought by the industrial revolution. Profoundly impressed with the work of the settlement movement, Jane Addams resolved to repeat the social experiment in Chicago. Addams founded Hull House with her partner Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. Addams saw Hull House as “an experimental effort to aid in the solution of the social and industrial problems which are engendered by the modern conditions of life in a great city.”6 Addams appreciated that the spiritual/educational mission of settlement could not be based on settlors imposing their understandings of morality on poor families. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12. -

JosEPh MilliChaP 1 Robert Penn Warren and Photography JosEPh MilliChaP WEstErn kEntuCky univErsity Robert Penn Warren’s career and canon demonstrate his more than casual interest in photography, much like that of several Southern contemporaries. If not so directly as Eudora Welty, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison, who were all accomplished photographers, Warren became creatively engaged with photographic art during the 1930s and 1940s, along with other deracinated Southerners such as Erskine Caldwell, Richard Wright, and James Agee. Some of these literary figures were directly involved with books illustrated by photographs during these critical decades. For example, You Have Seen Their Faces (1937), combining Caldwell’s non-fiction and Margaret Bourke- White’s photography, became a national bestseller. In contrast, Hurston’s Tell My Horse (1937) and Wright’s 12 Million Black Voices (1941) never have been widely appreciated, while Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), a compilation of prose and photographyby Agee and Walker Evans, was initially neglected. -

Howard A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Literature in English—Master of Arts 2015 ABSTRACT “I WAS A CREATURE OF ENVIRONMENT”: JAMESIAN HABIT IN JACK LONDON’S THE IRON HEEL By Thomas W. Howard William James describes in his Principles of Psychology the central role that habits and adaptation plays in the human experience. Habits affect an individual’s beliefs, actions, and emotions, and without habits an individual would not have any personality. In the nineteenth century, literary theorists such as Henry James describe the necessity for authors to create realistic characters and events. This thesis displays the intersection of these two intellectual movements in Jack London’s dystopian novel, The Iron Heel. I begin by examining the history of the theory of habits beginning with John Locke and ending with James’s own works on the subject. I then focus on literary theory and the ways it is conducive to the absorption of habit theory into the creation of realistic literary characters. I argue that novels that do this are “psychoepisodic,” or novels containing psychologically realistic characters that describes a piece of the psychological side of the human experience through various episodes.
