Did you know that the old car in the reception of our headquarters build- ing in Burgos is a Hispano Suiza, manufactured in Spain in 1924? It is the model T48, with 90 hp and 2.5 litres. It has a petrol engine with 4 cylinders. Its weight is 1,170 Kg. (2,580 lb) and it has four .

Did you know that its first owner was the Spanish King Alfonso XIII, the grandfather of the present monarch Juan Carlos I, who was a great fan of the automobiles?

Later, after the Second Spanish Republic was insti- tuted in Spain, this car belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture and it was used by a school for farming overseers. In 1966 it was bought in a public auction held by the mentioned ministry. The purchaser was the president of the Classic and Veteran Cars Club with head office in Madrid. Some years later, it changed hands again, becoming the property of the Antolin family, who proudly exhibit it at the en- trance of the central building of our company.

The car is catalogued by the Spanish motor vehicle authorities as a “Historic Vehicle” for two reasons: being an antique and having belonged to such a prominent person.

Next time you visit our head office in Burgos, you will surely look at the car in a different way… Q

The origins

The “Compañía General Española de Coches Au- tomóviles”, a company from Barcelona founded in 1899 Factory in Ripoll by Emilio de la Cuadra, was planning the development of some innovative electric cars. De la Cuadra appointed a young Swiss engineer, Marc Birkigt. Later, the design of the electric car ended up as failure and its development stopped. Birkigt realized the huge possibilities of the in- ternal combustion engine, reaching the conclusion that this would be the future of the motor vehicles. There- fore, several models were assembled in 1900 in order to test an internal combustion engine, which proved to be a success thanks to its high quality. However, unfortu- nately, the company went bankrupt a little later. In 1902 Birkigt became associated with another business-
