Virgin Galactic has invested in the team, technologies, and facilities required to build just such a customer-focused launch service, LauncherOne. Air-launched from a 747-400 carrier aircraft, LauncherOne is the space access service that will accelerate the small satellite revolution. The Aerospace Update Dec. 28, 2017 Top 2017 Space Images Video Credit: NASA SpaceX Concludes 2017 With Fourth Iridium Next launch SpaceX closed out its most successful year to date Dec. 22nd with the launch of 10 satellites for mobile satellite services operator Iridium, notching a personal best of 18 launches in a single year. The Falcon 9 mission, which took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 8:27 p.m. Eastern in an instantaneous launch window, was the fourth of eight missions for Iridium, carrying the McLean, Virginia- based operator’s second generation satellites, called Iridium Next. In what now is considered a rarity, SpaceX opted not to recover the rocket’s first stage, instead letting the booster fall into the Pacific Ocean. Video Credit: SpaceX Source: Caleb Henry @ SpaceNews.com Zenit Rocket Launches AngoSat-1 but Ground Control Loses Contact A Russian-Ukrainian Zenit rocket was launched on Tuesday, December 26th, with the aim of delivering into orbit Angola’s first satellite, known as AngoSat-1. However, it appears that contact with the spacecraft was lost after its deployment into orbit. The booster lifted off from Site 45/1 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Tuesday’s launch marked the first Zenit flight in more than two years when it orbited the Elektro-L № 2 weather satellite for Roscosmos. The rocket returned to flight despite fears that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which started in 2014, would kill any joint efforts between these two countries. Today, all the members of the Astronomy Club proudly speak for all that they have learnt and explored, be it from the wonders of physical Astronomy, to the mysteries of black holes. We started with our very own Solar System - the Sun, Planets, Satellites, Comets, Asteroids and went on as far as the enormous El Gordo. Our classes include lectures, debates, quizzes, interactive games and RIP TO THIS videos, and brainstorming sessions. In the coming months, we aim to learn more about the mysteries of DYNAMIC DUO the universe. HISPASAT Renews Designations of Its Satellite Fleet
Communications management HISPASAT renews designations of its satellite fleet The operator seeks to provide more precise and direct information through the designations used for its satellite system. All satellites will use Hispasat as their primary name, to which complementary information will be added in reference to each satellite’s orbital position and order of arrival. Madrid, 1 March 2016.- Spanish satellite communications operator HISPASAT has defined a new designation system for its satellite fleet. The change comes as a response to the Group’s growing number of satellites and orbital positions and reflects efforts to maintain designation coherency. The company seeks to establish a logical method to automate future satellite designations and provide informative content regarding satellites’ position and age and, therefore, has established the following system: all satellites will use Hispasat as their primary name, to which complementary information will be added in reference to each satellite’s orbital position and their order of arrival. Hence, when a satellite changes its location, its designation will also change, adapting it to the satellite’s new orbital position. In establishing HISPASATt’s new satellite designations, consideration has been given to the satellites that have already completed their useful life cycle and, therefore, been deorbited, such that numbering system will be linked to the history of the company’s satellites. The Amazonas satellites will keep their designation Excluded from this system will be satellites located at 61º West, which will keep the name Amazonas, since they are fully established on the market and well-known by all of the actors in the sector. -

Citing growing budget constraints, the US Air Force announced that is considering using small satellites in combination with next-gen software rather than procuring traditional multibillion-dollar, cost-plus spacecraft to replace/replenish its Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Despite awarding a $94 million contract to Ball Aerospace in November to design the Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M) satellite, the Air Force plans to begin launching small satellites equipped with infrared imaging and electro-optical instruments to monitor battlefield weather starting in 2021-2022. The Air Force is also considering augmenting their current capabilities with inactive NOAA GOES satellites in the near-term. These considerations parallel recent comments by USSTRATCOM commander Gen. John Hyten, who has repeatedly stated that the Air Force currently spends too much time and money developing large, high- cost satellites, and needs to invest in more small satellites for strategic Source: Lockheed Martin and budgetary reasons. Conclusion: Smallsats ready for a DoD growth spurt? With growing evidence of Russian/Chinese anti- satellite technology demonstrations, the Pentagon is becoming increasingly reluctant to spend billions of dollars on monolithic “Battlestar Galactica” satellite systems that place too many eggs in one basket. While not as robust or technologically-capable as high-end spacecraft built by traditional contractor, such as Lockheed Martin, small satellites are orders-of-magnitude less expensive to build, launch, and maintain. -
