Preserving, promoting and advancing the spiritual, cul- tural, health, economic, educational and social well-be- ing of our people is the core mission of GCPMNYAO.

It was my great honor in November to begin a term as President of this vital organization. To God be the glory for all the amazing growth and impact we have all experienced in the past 35 years. We are moving for- ward into this new era spearheaded by the Executive Board and covered by our collective prayers: much prayer, much power. Hence the reason why GCPMNYAO started its three year tenure with Wednesday night prayer meeting at the Faith SDA Church.

We aim to utilize our 501C3 status to provide services for in- dividuals within the tri-state area. We will continue to pro- vide our services to the tri Island of Grenada Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Our youth are a vital part of this organization’ future they are the force that will oversee the future of GCPMNYAO and continue with its growth. As such we have embarked on massive youth involvement through our partnership with EcKerd Connects, a workforce development youth program that helps prepare young adults between the ages of 16-24 to reach their full potential and connect them with career op- portunities. This program is funded by the NYC department of youth and community development.

Our vision is to have greater impact on the communities that we live in, especially at a time like this. Towards this end on February 13, 2018 members of the Executive Board attended a non for profit workshop sponsored by City Council Member Jumaane Williams. There we gained firsthand knowledge on government funding for nonprofit organization a resource that can be utilized to support our vision. Increasing our membership is another focus that will enable the organization to achieve its mission. There is strength in numbers so with your help we aim to add 1000 new members for 2018. GCPMNYAO needs a home and we have decided to join a new group of small business owners who meet on the last Wednesday of each month to discuss and enlighten each other with the necessary skills required to own and operate a business in New York.

Violence against women and children is on the rise in our tri Island countries. We have to stand up together and send a definite message to the Grenadian community that we are here to support them. We have partnered with Grenada Tees to do a march in Grenada in the foreseeable future against such atrocities.

Our reach can be wide and deep given many challenges that our communities are facing. We are being presented with op- portunities to effect change. We know that the task at hand is great and with your support we believe we can accomplish it! To our honorees, congratulations. To all our supporters we extend our heartfelt gratitude.

Rita M. Hall-Hutchinson, AAS, (Borough of Manhattan Community College) BSN, (Downstate medical Cen- ter), MSN (Hunter College) MA (Colombia University Teacher’s College) DNP (American Sentinel University-s completion in 2019)

Rita Maria Hall-Hutchinson was born in Grenada on September 13, and received her elementary and second- ary education on the island. She attended the Mc. Don- ald’s College in Sauteurs, St. Patrick’s. It was there that she developed her love and Passion for higher learning which she would carry with her for the rest of her life. She always wanted to be a nurse so she enrolled in the nursing program at Borough of Manhattan community college in 1982 shortly after arriving in the USA.

She completed the AAS degree in Nursing in 1986 and obtained her nursing license. She then joined the St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital medical Center as a staff nurse that year and worked there for 15 years in various departments until 2001. During that 15 year time period she sought to improve herself so she completed her BS in nursing at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn graduating in 1991 and an MS in Nursing from Hunters College, graduating in 1999. After Roosevelt, She went to work at the Wykoff Hospital, Brook- lyn, NY and remained there until 2002 before moving on to Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center until 2004. She also worked at New York Community Hospital from 2004 to 2008 an then moved on to Kings County Hospital as the Assistant Director of Nursing for the Behavioral or Psychiatric division. There she helped Kings County through some period of bad publicity arising out of the alleged poor treatment of patients in the Behavioral unit. With the help of the team of which she was part Kings County corrected the problems in the Behav- ioral department and continue to thrive today. Additionally, while at Kings County in the capacity of staff coordinator/ nurse recruiter/Human Resources liaison, Rita had the op- portunity to recruit, mentor and nurture several members of the local West Indian community in positions ranging from Registered nurses to nurses aids and clerical staff. Rita con- tinued to improve herself by attended the Colombia Univer- sity Teacher’s College where she completed an MA in Nurs- ing administration and Teaching which landed her a job as a nursing instructor at Kings County Hospital. She remained in this position until her departure in 2017. She is currently a nursing instructor at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and is pursuing her Doctor of Nursing practice Degree which she is expected to complete in 2019.

Although she held an official office in the GNYCAO, Rita has been a very active and valuable member of the or- ganization. She is always willing to support and contribute whatever she could in cash, food and any other support the organization needs when she is approached. In the years 2011 and 2014, Rita was very involved participant in the Medical Mission trips to the mother land of Grenada. In 2011, she took the lead in running the clinics at the Grand Bras Medi- cal Center and The Tivoli Medical Center for an entire week. In 2014, she again gracefully headed the group at the St. Da- vid’s Medical Center. Over those two visits, we were able to provide medical care, medications, MRI, blood work studies, dental work, GYN services and mammograms to the natives of the island- some much needed interventions that the na- tives could not ordinarily afford. Rita is also willing to cook foods like rice/peas, saltfish, bake bully bakes and cakes, and make local drinks like sorrel and Mauby. Something that is very beneficial to the organization during our socials and our official celebration every October.

In discussions with Rita about being an officer of the organization, she always says, “I cannot commit to being an officer because of time constraints but I will be here to sup- port you in whatever capacity I can. Just let me know how and when”. She has been faithful to that promise because whenev- er asked for support she always steps up and answers the call. HONOREE Dr. Anthony D Bridgeman

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”. -Thomas Edison

Dr. Anthony D Bridgeman was born in the small village of Byelands, St. Andrews where he attended the St. Michael’s RC School. After passing the Com- mon Entrance Exam, he attended the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS). Dr. B, Doc, or Dr. BMAN as he is affectionately known by his students and staff has had various positions in the education- al and counseling field: teacher, program director, therapist, vice principal, and principal). He is also an adjunct college professor at Hofstra University, and St. Rose College, teach- ing educational leadership classes to teachers and adminis- trators.

Dr. B has facilitated many workshops both in the United States and international countries. He has conducted workshops in Hawaii, New Orleans, San Diego, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Atlanta, and Grenada. He has just completed an ex- ecutive leadership workshop in April for the Prime Minister’s cabinet in Grenada.

Dr. B established a foundation called Bridging The Gap GDA, Inc. in Grenada in 2016. The foundation provides help for school children in the areas of a breakfast program, shoes, and scholarships.

ABOUT BRIDGING THE GAP

Bridging the Gap GDA, Inc. is a Non-Profit organization conceptualized and founded by Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, a Grenada-born, New York based Educator and Philanthro- pist. Because of his experiences with poverty as a youngster, and his firm conviction that Education is the surest way out, Dr. Bridgeman has committed to helping the youth of his Is- land Homeland, facing similar circumstances, determined to at least help them overcome the odds.

Under the BGI, help can be accessed through the DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS Program, a scholarship set up for seven students, a second and fourth former, of his Alma Mater, the Grenada Boys Secondary School. The ONE STEP AT A TIME effort aims to get shoes unto the feet of the neediest of the Island’s students. Under the HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS project, the BGI aims to provide assis- tance to the hot meals and breakfast programs across the country.

Bridging The Gap Foundation has also provided school sup- plies to numerous primary and secondary schools in Grena- da. Dr. Bridgeman has also provided Professional Develop- ment (PD) Workshops to the Grenada Ministry of Education, counselors, teachers, and principals throughout the island. Dr. B’s mission is to motivate, to educate, and inspire people.

HONOREE James H. Herry

Nestled in the Northern part of the island of Grena- da is the village with a rich culture called River Sallee. In this village, Hamilton & Cynthia Herry welcomed their fifth (5th) child into the world and called him James Joseph Hamilton Herry. As a child, he was ex- tremely close to his mother.

This family moved to the capital after the first of their children won a scholarship to enter secondary school. The move was more economical for the family. At that time, the father HJ as he was called migrated to United Kingdom leav- ing the mother to care for her eight (8) children.

James attended the Wesley Hall school on Lucas Street. From there he entered the Grenada Boys Secondary School. As a lad, one of his main focus was sports and he represented his House “Hughes” in many sporting events.

This young man was very mischievous but respectful. In fact, he had no choice as his mother was very strict disciplinarian and never failed to spare the rod. Education was the mantra in the Herry home.

In every family, there is always one who would try to “buck” the rules. James was that one. However, his mother would never relent in ensuring that he followed the rules of the church and authorities. As a young man, his role mod- el was his older brother Samuel who was very political. In fact, Samuel had declared himself to be a Communist and had James as his “bag boy”. In those days, the Police seized materials termed as “left leanings” and James acted as the “lookout man” to hide all such literature in case of a raid. It was from such an introduction which led him to his political background in his future years.

James was very active in the Pathfinder Club and Cadet Corp and followed the militancy of his brother. Even though the family resided in the “City”, he always considered himself as a country person. Therefore, he traveled every weekends, vacations and every opportunity to Madeys to be with his grandparents especially his grandfather whom he loved dearly.

Upon his graduation from Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS), James entered the work force in 1971 employed by the Govt. of Grenada in the Ministry of Youth Development & Sports. He organized many sporting events and competi- tion in St. Patrick’s. His Club was named Northerners and participated in many sporting activities around the country. That organization in sporting activities in St. Patrick’s had a most positive effect on the community in helping to curb violence.

In 1979, he was very instrumental in leading the Northern Rebel forces in toppling the Government of Eric Matthew Gairy. However, due to political difference within the Revo- lutionary Party (PRG), he was unfairly arrested, never tried and was imprisoned.

On April 1, 1980, he was removed from the prison and taken directly to the airport and sent to the USA where he had his Permanent Resident. This only spurred on his fight for his country’s freedom. He attended many political rallies, had many interviews and did everything in his fight to return to his country. As a matter of fact, he was on the first U.S. plane after the Invasion to return to his homeland. After the dili- gent prayers of his mother and others, James laid down his political mantle and returned to the teachings of his child- hood. He married one of his Young Adult sweethearts Listra in 1984. That union has borne three (3) children - Jamila, Jelani & Dalia and a granddaughter Skylar whom he abso- lutely spoils and adores. He has been a very active member of the Brooklyn Faith SDA church and has served in various departments. He currently serves with his wife as Family Life Coordinators and been the 1st Elder for many years.

He is one of the founding members of the Grenada N.Y. Adventist Organization and held the office of the Presiden- cy for many years. Under his active leadership with many such persons as the late Carlton Forsythe, Jude Granger, Joel Hypolite, John McQueen, Curland Francis, Crafton Calliste, Ritchie Donald, Bernadette Thomas, Listra Herry and oth- ers too numerous to mention, many accomplishments were made. The organization was instrumental in assisting many person with their Permanent Residency; Scholarships were given to needy families in Grenada, Assistance were sent to Foster Homes & churches in the form of barrels, containers (during Ivan) and monetary gifts. The Annual Convocations and Annual Picnics were highlighted events where many came to worship and fellowship with Ministers from all over came to present the “Word”.

James obtained a B.A. in Social Work from York College and a MSW from Adelphi University. He was employed at Long Island Jewish Hospital (LIJ) for 15 years and Family Services for ten (10); both times as a Social Worker. He is current- ly retired and is actively visiting the sick and shut-ins and giving counseling to all who so desire. James believes that life is about being able to help our fellow men rise to a high- er plane of living. This belief and his firm faith in God has strengthened him in his walk in life knowing that character is not for this life only but also that which we will take with us to heaven. HONOREE Glenroy M. George

Glenroy Michael George was born in the vibrant and autonomous village of Paraclete, in the parish of St. Andrew Grenada. Glenroy is one of nine children. As a boy Glenroy was very adventurous and curious about his surrounding and the world.

In his earliest years Glenroy attended St. Andrews Methodist School; from there he went to St. Andrews Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) and then on to Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS) and graduat- ed from Fifth form. During these years growing up as a boy Glenroy was an avid sports fan and participant. Like most boys his age, cricket was, and probably still is, his favorite sport. In fact he was a mainstay and impressive batsman for the senior Paraclete cricket team until immigrating to the United States.

Glenroy immigrated to the United States in 1981 when there was only a sprinkling of Grenadians in Brooklyn, and held odd jobs to support himself. Having always prized education as a tool of advancement, he couldn’t wait for the opportunity to resume his quest. This opportunity came when in 1986 he enrolled as a freshman in John Jay School of Criminal Justice, a CUNY college. During that time Glenroy also held a job as a city investigator in the City of New York Human Resources Department. After graduating John Jay, Glenroy continued to work with the city. Still not satisfied with his level of educa- tion and on pure determination and grit, Glenroy did what it took to get enrolled at St, Johns School of Law. Of course, this was not an easy undertaking when you consider that at the time he was now a married man and a father of two young children to provide and care for. Fortunately for him, he mar- ried a woman above his class in the person of Joan Viechweg of Hermitage St. Patrick’s whom he had eyed ever since his days at SAASS. Joan has been a constant anchor and support throughout all of his many accomplishment. Today, they are more than 30 years married.

Glenroy graduated St. John’s School of Law in the summer of 1993, later sat a passed the New York bar exams and embarked on a career with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

After only a year with the DA’s office, Glenroy, partnered Peter David, and Elvin Nimrod, in their Nostand Avenue Law Offices which relocated to Clarkson Avenue. Today, Glenroy is a seasoned practicing attorney from his Utica Avenue Law offices. So Glenroy’s life, as you see, has been a journey in perseverance and determination.

During this life’s journey, Glenroy has been a constant community organizer. Among his many achievements is the Grenada Soccer Federation which he set up to assist young Grenadians in their educational pursuit and other career goals. In that cause he has expended countless hours and his own money to sometimes perfect strangers. Many of these young men who are invited to participate have little to no resources to help themselves. Often, they have no relatives in the United States and Glenroy and others must sometimes secure their residence, provide food and even clothing for these men. Often it’s a struggle in Grenada, too, Glenroy has assisted many young people and elderly people get on their feet.

Another worthy endeavor that Glenroy helped organize is the Group which goes by the name the New York – Paraclete Connections which again is design to help the children of his beloved Paraclete and the surrounding areas. The highlight of this group is when they hold their annual beautiful Christ- mas-Tree lighting in Paraclete Rounds-About where toys are distributed to community children who otherwise would go without.

Glenroy has stepped up in other important ways as well to assist others, like allowing other groups to use his office base- ment to hold meetings often without charge.

So Glenroy is a selfless person and leader in many ways; and I am sure he will continue on that path because it’s ultimately who he is. EARLEY TRAVEL SERVICE 4912 Church Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11203
