  • Oaths in Judicial Proceedings and Their Effect Upon the Competency of Witn-Esses
TIE AMERIGAN LAW REGISTER FOUNDED I852. UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTBENT OP LAW VOL. 4 N. S. I JULY, 193 NO. 7. OATHS IN JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS AND THEIR EFFECT UPON THE COMPETENCY OF WITN-ESSES. Self-interest is perhaps the fundamental fact in human nature. Every man naturally seeks to promote the welfare of himself and his family before that of his neighbor. Un- -less he be largely influenced by considerations of morality or religion, he will, if necessary, tell a lie for that purpose. Even in a highly moral conmunity of to-day, a man who will never misrepresent is extremely rare-. In the primitive ages he was probably an unknown species. Ie is, exclu- sively, the product of education and religious training. Of self-interest is born distrust of others. If a man will lie to serve his own interests, he will instantly suspect his neighbor of doing the same thing. It is, therefore, a natural presumption and we can safely assume from the evidence that primitive man had little faith in the accuracy of facts, related to him by.his fellows, if they in any way affected the interests of the relators. With the growth of his intelligence. however, he clearly realized that it is impossible for a well-ordered comunity to exist unless some reliance can be placed upon the words -of the 373 374 OATIIS IN JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS AND THEIR members of that comnunity. Some means, therefore, had to be devised, bv which men could be bound to tell the truth and to p1erform their promises, so that there might be faith between them.

18 Mokrý, M. (2016). Kontrakulturní tvorba Thursatrú: Black metal coby model tvorby náboženské identity v chaos- gnosticismu. Sacra, 14(2), 18–36. Kontrakulturní tvorba Thursatrú: Black metal coby model tvorby náboženské identity v chaos-gnosticismu Counter-cultural Formation of Thursatrú: Black Metal as a Model of Identity Formation in Chaos-gnosticism Matouš Mokrý, FF UK, Ústav Filosofie a Religionistiky e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article deals with an esoteric current Thursatrú. Thursatrú falls within a broader esoteric current Chaos-gnosticism, which is a synthesis of Gnosticism, various Left-Hand Path teachings and Satanism. Thursatrú transfers Chaos- gnostic thought into Germanic Heathenism. The article pursues the formation of Thursatrú via its delimitation from the mainstream society, Satanism, Left- Hand Path and Ásatrú in expression of black metal musicians who constitute the foundation of Thursatrú. In connection with the Gnostic dualism, the practitioners strongly transgress the above mentioned notions, whereas they consider themselves being elevated above the society. Thursatrú practitioners adopt the black metal concept of identity formation based on transgression in order to embody themselves in plural and relativistic modern world. The article also puts Thursatrú into a broader context of the evolution of Left-Hand Path and black metal. Keywords Thursatrú, Chaos-gnosticism, Satanism, Left-Hand Path, black metal, Germanic Heathenism, identity formation Klíčová slova Thursatrú, chaos-gnosticismus, satanismus, Left-Hand Path, black metal, germánské pohanství, tvorba identity Úvod V západní společnosti od konce 2. světové války upadá obliba tradičních náboženských institucí (Granholm, 2014: 176) a vznikají tzv. nová náboženská hnutí, která čerpají z nejrůznějších tradic stojících často mimo tradiční institucionalizovanou křesťanskou nauku.

The majority of the previously described species are entered in the works by Alcock, Laurie or Borradaile on the Brachyura of India, Ceylon and the Maldives, or form part of the Indo-Pacific fauna. Among the exceptions are three species from the Seychelles which have been recorded hitherto only from the Red Sea, or Persian Gulf, or both, viz.: Atergatopsis signata, Actumnus honnieri and Eumedonus granulosus. Another Red Sea form, Actumnus globulus, was taken by the "Sealark" at the Chagos Archipelago.
