I have benefitted immensely from the critique and encouragement of my fellow members in the Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies of the Department of History at the University of Arizona. Ms. Luise Betterton, the Administrative Assistant of the Division, has been most helpful at all times. The patient reading and persuasive advice of Professors Donald Weinstein, Richard Cosgrove, and Alan Bernstein, University of Arizona, have saved the dissertation from innumerable errors in composition and judgment. Professor Richard Jensen in the Classics Department of the University of Arizona was always available for questions on Latin readings and transcriptions. Professor Anne Hudson, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, deserves special recognition for her generous help with microfilms and print-outs and for extensive discussions about all things related to the Lollards. I owe a measureless debt of gratitude to my advisor, Professor Dr. Heiko A. Oberman, for his patience with my belated introduction into scholarship, for his enthusiasm about my topic and for the tenacity with which he scrutinized this study from its inception to completion. 5 DEDICATION For Gwen "not even the rain has such small hands" e. e. cummings 6 TABLE OF CONTENTS ABBREVIATIONS . 10 I. The aim of this study is to redress that imbalance by showing the pervasiveness of fear aroused by the Antichrist and the sense of imminent judgment that affected mentalities of the Later Middle Ages and Reformation. Particularly in the case of the Lollards, one finds a heightened sense of the impending "Day of the Lord" because they perceived that the principal foe of Christ, the horrific Antichrist, had seized the Holy See of the established church; hence, Christ must soon appear to vanquish his enemy. The identification of the papacy as the dreaded Antichrist was more than a rhetorical ploy used by the Lollards to cast aspersions on their opponent. They corroborated the historical record of the papacy's rise to power with the absolute standard of the 'law of Christ'. Biblical prophecies of the Antichrist's tactics were confirmed by their experiences before episcopal commissions-- at times concluded by death at the stake. In homes and in secret gathering places, they communicated the reVOlutionary vision that the Antichrist was a 'corporate' 9 entity, not a super-human megalomaniac nor a mere symbol of evil; indeed, the 'Abomination of Desolation' reigned from within the church. Denouncing the Roman church as the "sinagogue of Satan", they resisted the hegemonic control stealthily acquired by the Antichrist, propagated through church law and papal accretions of dogma. They exposed the machinations of the Beast attempting to gain absolute control over secular authorities as well. Thus, the Lollards abrogated the authority claimed by the medieval church as they formed their own concept of church and community. A reform movement, initiated from the 'ivory tower' of Oxford University, penetrated into the fields, villages and towns of late medieval and Reformation England. The measure of its impact is reflected in the concerted effort of church and crown to eradicate Lollardy and in its legacy--that harried Elizabeth I, while it motivated Oliver Cromwell. 10 ABBREVIATIONS AHR American Historical Review CChr Corpus Christianorum Series Latina CH Church History CIHEC Commission Internationale d'Histoire Ecclesiastique Comparee CM Cursor Mundi Comm. The Illuminati Formula to Create an Undetectable Total Mind Control Slave Dedication & Table of Contents Fritz Springmeier's Introduction Glossary of Terms By Fritz Springmeier & Cisco Wheeler http://educate-yourself.org/mc/IlluminatiFormulaindex.shtml Dedication This book is dedicated to the two million Americans and counting who have been programmed with Monarch-type trauma-based mind control. This book is written to destroy trauma-based mind control before it destroys the human race. It’s time for this horrendous secret to end. It is also written as part of God’s end time work to propel people of faith to the high calling that is prophesied of the Body, but cannot be attained without men of faith understanding these things. Humanity’s great prophet said he came to heal those whose hearts had been broken-- literally split and crushed, and to free those who are captive. That work needs to go forward. Blood, sweat and tears are associated with this book. The blood of the innocent victims of this mind- control cries out in a single unison, along with the pungent sweat of those who have tried to minister help to the shattered humanity left by the sadistic programmers, and the pools of tears shed as this book was written, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, do you not judge and avenge our blood on earth?" WARNING, READ THIS FIRST BEFORE READING THE BOOK: IF THERE IS ANY CHANCE you the reader have had mind-control done to you, you must consider the following book to be DANGEROUS. If you are consulting a therapist for DID (also known as MPD), it is recommended that you consult your therapist before reading this book.

  • Book Viii of De Pauperie Salvatoris by Richard Fitzralph, and William Woodford's Defensorium
CHRIST'S POVERTY IN ANTIMENDICANT DEBATE: BOOK VIII OF DE PAUPERIE SALVATORIS BY RICHARD FITZRALPH, AND WILLIAM WOODFORD'S DEFENSORIUM Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History Bridget Riley Submitted July 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis comprises a study of two fourteenth-century texts, written as part of the mendicant controversy, book VIII of De pauperie Salvatoris by Richard FitzRalph, Archbishop of Armagh, (c. 1300-1360) and its response, Defensorium Fratrum Mendicantium contra Ricardum Armachanum in Octavo Libello de Pauperie Christi, by the English Franciscan friar, William Woodford (c. 1330-c. 1397). It introduces each theologian, speculating why such significant fourteenth-century thinkers are not more widely known to scholars of this period. It briefly explores how contemporary understandings of the practice of mendicancy have become obscured within a historiography which seems reluctant to turn to the works of the critics of the mendicant friars for information. Based on a close-reading of each text, the thesis examines FitzRalph's declaration that Christ did not beg, and Woodford's assertion that he did, noting how each theologian uses scripture, the writings of the Church fathers, those of mendicant theologians, and mobilizes arguments from the classical philosopher, Aristotle, to construct their opposing viewpoints. Focussing especially on discussions about poverty, and about the life and activities of Christ, it suggests that information valuable to social historians is located in these texts, where each theologian constructs their own worldview, and rationalizes their position. Of particular interest is FitzRalph's radical fashioning of Christ as a labouring carpenter, and Woodford's construction of a socio-economic and an anti-semitic argument to disprove it.

  • The College and Canons of St Stephen's, Westminster, 1348
The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety.
