The Picos de Europa National Park is the highest point of the and it forms one of the most beautiful mountain ranges on the Iberian Peninsula, an incredible setting where the famous Liébana region nestles. With a total spread of 64,660 hectares, the park covers three Autonomous Communities: Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla y León. Within Livestock Fair. (Potes) the territory of the National Park, impressive variations in altitude are recorded, from almost sea level (just 90 m elevation at the mouth of the Cares River) to 2,646 m at the peak of Torrecerredo, 2,642 at Torre Blanca or 2,613 at Peña Vieja . The Picos de Europa are divided up into three massifs, defined by deep gorges carved out of the living rock: the Western or Cornion Massif, the Central Massif or Macizo de los Urielles and the Eastern or Andara Massif, the last two being located in Cantabria. The most

Fuente Dé cable car eye-catching characteristic of this region is its geology, with impressive variations in altitude that make it visible from virtually anywhere in the region.

6 There is a great deal of flora and fauna in the Picos de Europa. The highlands are dominated by chamois, without forgetting royal eagles, although other animals such as bears and capercaillies may be seen in the lower reaches. Camaleño These images alternate with the presence of beech groves and in the lower regions, with oak woods and mixed forests, which host a wide range of different mammals, including wolves, wild boars, badgers, wildcats, genets… standing out. Visitors will find a hiker’s paradise with many signed routes and picturesque villages such as Camaleño and . For those who are looking for an easier crossing, in Camaleño there is the Fuente Dé cable car, in which you can comfortably ascend to the heart of the Central Massif and to the Áliva Passes.

9 Los Collados del Asón Nature Reserve

The birth of the Asón, in the Soba Valley, is a very beautiful spot. It still keeps its original nature and customs and it is also remarkable for its variety of scenery, through which rivers run that open up their routes through woods of oak, beech and holm oaks, until flowing into their

Wild boar estuaries and marshes. Amongst the steep mountains of the Soba Valley, the Ason River and its affluent, the Gándara River flow. The Asón is born from a karstic upwelling, which generates a spectacular waterfall of over 50 metres, where the resounding water and the marvellous landscape at the head of the valley take over your senses. Los Collados del Asón Nature Reserve guarantees the conservation of these beautiful sites. The massifs of the Alto Asón rise to over 1,600 metres in height in spectacular limestone formations. The meadows where goats, sheep and cows graze and the woods of oak, beech and holm oak rise up in between the vertical rock faces.

14 Las Dunas de Liencres Nature Reserve

Where the Pas River meets the Cantabrian Sea, in the district of Piélagos, just 12 kilometres from Santander, one of the most extensive dune systems on the northern Spanish coast may be found. The action of the wind, which moves the sands in the coastal currents, has generated a beautiful landscape, which has been declared a Nature Reserve, perfect for walking and enjoying the area. The interest of Las Dunas de Liencres is not just due to its scenery, but also geomorphologically it is incredibly important. It houses an ecosystem with little, but highly specialised vegetation, with a high degree of natural that covers an extensive area. The Liencres beach dunes allow species with highly developed roots and leaves adapted to saline environments to exist, all of them adapted to the harsh conditions of this region. This vegetation wealth is a transit area for many migratory water birds, particularly visible in the winter, and country species live in the surrounding area.

15 The Tina Menor and Mayor Estuaries

The western most estuaries in Cantabria are the two Tinas, the Mayor and the Minor. The Tina Mayor is the estuary of the Deva River and the natural boundary between the Regional Communities of Asturias and Cantabria. On one side the Cantabrian town of Unquera is located and on the other, the Asturian town of Bustio. Tina Mayor is a large gorge carved by the Deva River, coming from the glaciers in the Picos de Europa, the waters of which are increased by the Puente de Tina Menor. Asturian River Cares. Both rivers, gentle and slow at Tina Menor bridge their mouths, have formed the impressive stone gorges along the way of the Desfiladero de la Hermida and the La Garganta of the Cares River. The Nansa River flows into the Tina Menor and one of its springs is born in the cold peaks of Alto Campoo, on the Three Seas Peak , known in this way because the rivers that pour into three different seas are born on its slopes: the Nansa in the Cantabrian Sea, the Ebro in the Mediterranean and the Pisuerga in the Atlantic. The Tina Menor estuary, in the town of Pesués, makes its way between Playa de Tina Menor. coastal hills and its view from the Alto de Pechón is magnificent, with emerald coloured waters. 16 The Ebro Reservoir

The Ebro Reservoir is a pioneer space that is focused on environmental education. Located around the Ebro Marshland, in the Campoo-Los Valles region, to the south, it forms a privileged setting. Different ecosystems are concentrated here: Banks, lake, moors, an abandoned village, rock ledges The Ebro and different woods, on an incredible woody peninsula Marshland surrounded by the water from the marshland. With this “raw material”, an “Environmental Classroom” project has been developed, which allows students to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy a complete perspective of the most outstanding characteristics of this unique area in Cantabria. At the centre, research projects on environmental resources and recovery plans for protected species, such as the stork or the otter are developed. Visitors can enjoy three itineraries of different lengths: a family circuit on foot, a circuit around the perimeter in a cart drawn by Asturcon horses and another 10 kilometres route that passes through different ecosystems.

17 Santander Bay Santander Bay is one of the most important identifying symbols of the city and of the region. Its beaches are the best known and appreciated natural spaces in the bay, extending along five kilometres of coastline, alternating with very beautiful green spaces that emerge along the coast. To appreciate all the details of Santander Bay, a trip should be made in the “launch”, which leaves the dock on the Paseo de Pereda in the and covers a route around the entire bay, approaching the Somo and El Puntal beaches, to the south, the beaches of La Magdalena and El Sardinero and finally the lighthouse of Cabo Mayor. By land, we should emphasise the hiking route between Somo and Galizano, which runs along the seashore and the trails and bird observatory of the Marisma Blanca, in the town of .

18 Cabárceno Nature Park The Cabárceno Nature Park is located around 15 kilometres from Santander, very close to the Cantabrian motorway (Santander- Bilbao) Originally, an opencast iron mine, the network of paths, tunnels and tracks have been prepared for hiking and vehicles. In this spectacular karstic landscape the most suitable spaces for the animals from over a hundred different species have been created, from the most exotic to the most representative of Iberian and Cantabrian fauna, living in semi-freedom, meaning they can live in the way that is closest to their original habitat. For quality, the Cabárcena Park’s facilities are amongst the best valued by the organisms that protect the quality of life of the animals. Many activities are organised in the Park, aimed at bringing visitors closer to nature. The Environmental Classroom stands out, which develops a complete programme of educational activities aimed at school children.

19 Beaches

The Cantabrian coast extends over an area of slightly more than 250 kilometres, between the Deva River Estuary to the West and the Onton Estuary to the East. On this coast, the wild

Covachos Cantabrian Sea has modelled the land, forming steep cliffs, islets, extensive beaches of white sand, little coves and creeks, estuaries, natural harbours and fishing villages. There are around 70 beaches along this coast that are suitable for , which amongst all of them make a total of around 50 kilometres. From the extensive sandbanks, some several kilometres long such as the Merón beach in San Vicente de la Barquera, to small, sheltered coves, all the beaches along the Cantabrian coast stand out due to their fine, golden sand and to the quality of their waters. Solitary, underneath the cliffs, urban, wild, large sandbanks or small coves, the beaches of Cantabria offer all the variety possible regarding scenery, shapes and location. La Magdalena Beach. (Santander)

20 An example of urban beaches are the ones in Santander, all of them integrated into the city and flawlessly clean, or those of the villages of Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Noja or Comillas, with long sandbanks that include all the services and conveniences. In addition to this type of beach, there are other more Laredo solitary ones, further away from the large towns and located in unfrequented beauty spots, with bathers only appearing during the summer months. Some examples are the beaches of Berria in Santoña, Langre in Ribamontán al Mar, El Puntal in Pedreña, Liencres located in the Las Dunas de Liencres Nature Reserve, Oyambre in Valdáliga or El Merón in San Vicente de la Barquera. They are characterised by Comillas their large sandy expanses, open to the sea and their fine, golden sand.

Safety rules and advice for enjoying the beaches Enjoying a day at the beach, sun and sea bathing, is a highly recommended activity, but some precautions must be taken to ensure that no risks are involved.

21 When reaching a beach you must look at the signs and indications of risks in the water that are shown at the First Aid Posts. This information is transmitted by the flags, which use three colours that are internationally known. Green means the water conditions are normal and suitable for bathing without any danger. With the yellow flag, precautions should be taken when bathing, due to the presence of swell and stronger currents. The red flag shows that the sea is not suitable for bathing, with a heavy swell and dangerous currents. It should also be taken into account that the Cantabrian Sea, unlike other coastal regions in the country, is subjected to strong tides, which are cyclic movements of water that are repeated every six hours, with two high tides and two low tides per day.
