    ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED by Anna Schafer Most of us have read the story of Anne Frank and her diary. In much of the world it has been part of the school curriculum ever since the book's first publication in 1947. Anne’s main message has always been seen as one of optimism and conciliation in the face of the utter barbarism of her time. At the age of 14, in her diary entrance of the 15th of July, 1944. she makes her famous statement: “Still, I keep my ideals, because, in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.“ (p.237) Anne was born July 12 1929 in Frankfurt. Because of rising Anti-Semitism the family left Germany in 1933 and settled in the Netherlands. I myself was born ten years later, in April 1939 in Vienna, a year after the annexation of Austria and six months before the German attack on Poland. When I was three I was sent by train to North Germany to non-Jewish relatives, who lived in the small village of Andorf, near the Dutch border. Anne and I shared our first names, Anne. We also shared two languages and cultures, German and Dutch. However, Anne knew that her family was in hiding because they were Jews. I did not discover my Jewishness until I was an adult. We both lived through all six years of WWII. They were Anne’s last and my first years of life. There are barely 200 km between Amsterdam and Andorf and the Bergen- Belsen camp where Anne died in early March 1945 is only 150 km east of Andorf.

    Catherine the Great and the Development of a Modern Russian Sovereignty, 1762-1796 By Thomas Lucius Lowish A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Victoria Frede-Montemayor, Chair Professor Jonathan Sheehan Professor Kinch Hoekstra Spring 2021 Abstract Catherine the Great and the Development of a Modern Russian Sovereignty, 1762-1796 by Thomas Lucius Lowish Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Victoria Frede-Montemayor, Chair Historians of Russian monarchy have avoided the concept of sovereignty, choosing instead to describe how monarchs sought power, authority, or legitimacy. This dissertation, which centers on Catherine the Great, the empress of Russia between 1762 and 1796, takes on the concept of sovereignty as the exercise of supreme and untrammeled power, considered legitimate, and shows why sovereignty was itself the major desideratum. Sovereignty expressed parity with Western rulers, but it would allow Russian monarchs to bring order to their vast domain and to meaningfully govern the lives of their multitudinous subjects. This dissertation argues that Catherine the Great was a crucial figure in this process. Perceiving the confusion and disorder in how her predecessors exercised power, she recognized that sovereignty required both strong and consistent procedures as well as substantial collaboration with the broadest possible number of stakeholders. This was a modern conception of sovereignty, designed to regulate the swelling mechanisms of the Russian state. Catherine established her system through careful management of both her own activities and the institutions and servitors that she saw as integral to the system.

By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry.

    Existential Songs Full results Supplementary material for Mick Cooper’s Existential psychotherapy and counselling: Contributions to a pluralistic practice (Sage, 2015), Appendix. One of the great strengths of existential philosophy is that it stretches far beyond psychotherapy and counselling; into art, literature and many other forms of popular culture. This means that there are many – including films, novels and songs that convey the key messages of existentialism. These may be useful for trainees of existential therapy, and also as recommendations for clients to deepen an understanding of this way of seeing the world. In order to identify the most helpful resources, an online survey was conducted in the summer of 2014 to identify the key existential films, books and novels. Invites were sent out via email to existential training institutes and societies, and through social media. Participants were invited to nominate up to three of each art media that ‘most strongly communicate the core messages of existentialism’. In total, 119 people took part in the survey (i.e., gave one or more response). Approximately half were female (n = 57) and half were male (n = 56), with one of other gender. The average age was 47 years old (range 26–89). The participants were primarily distributed across the UK (n = 37), continental Europe (n = 34), North America (n = 24), Australia (n = 15) and Asia (n = 6). Around 90% of the respondents were either qualified therapists (n = 78) or in training (n = 26). Of these, around two-thirds (n = 69) considered themselves existential therapists, and one third (n = 32) did not. There were 235 nominations for the key existential song, with enormous variation across the different respondents.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

Umestitev performansa v prostor in primer Pussy Riot v Rusiji Performans je subverzivna umetnost, ki odprto kritizira družbeno-politična dogajanja in postavlja pod vprašaj dominantne diskurze – od prevladujočih vrednot in norm do splošno sprejetih definicij, dognanj in praks. V magistrskem delu me je zanimalo, ali je izbira prostora za izvedbo performansa ključna za to, kako bo družbeno kritično sporočilo aktivista razumljeno v širši javnosti ali ne. Da bi odgovorila na raziskovalno vprašanje, sem najprej naredila tekstualno analizo sekundarnih virov, s katero sem dobila splošen okvir za nadaljnje razmišljanje, nato pa sem izvedla študijo primera. Analizirala sem performans skupine Pussy Riot, do katerega je prišlo v moskovski katedrali Kristusa Odrešenika. Z analizo sem želela izvedeti, kako je na umestitev Punk molitve v prostor gledala ruska javnost in kako so nanjo reagirali ljudje po svetu. Ugotovila sem, da sta bili ruska in svetovna javnost enotnega mnenja o neprimernosti sakralnega prostora za izvedbo umetniške akcije, vendar je bilo v Rusiji zaznati večje nerazumevanje motivov, ki so vodili skupino.
