At Home: How we did it, I don't know. Leah went through her (notoriously) hardest year of high school at the (notoriously) most demanding school, Julie wrote her own dissertation and defended it one day before I did mine, and I flew between self-absorbed panic and the self-absorbed pleasure of writing and "making up the world." And we all just kept doing what's called "believing in one another." I had one thing going for me that everybody should have: a good fairy, who read my stuff and kept telling me it was beautiful and brilliant. And at just the right moment, would write fairy tales, the likes of which few have seen. By her own account, this good fairy "muttered and paced, her chain-smoking giving nothing less than the appearance of a locomotive gone off its tracks," and this she did more viii than once. She assured me that my second child would be born, "not with unlimited wealth and mathematical ability"; but that I would only have to give her up for a little while, "while others poked and pried at her, but that they wouldn't hurt her." And that I would be able to "pick her back up and stuff her in a manila envelope and send her off to publishers and make a zillion dollars and then give all of it (okay some of it) to [my] nearest and dearest so they could open a bar." So far, she's been right. If all goes well, we'll call the joint "Kubo's Coffee and Fairy Tales." ix Abstract In my thesis, I work towards developing a theory of the ways in which political ideologies, with fascism as the most salient, constitute and articulate not only pure race, but pure gender. Some of the arguments that I make: that ideologies of dominance are about maleness, and about femaleness, and are therefore about impure maleness and femaleness; that in the constitution of meanings and practices, violence and eroticism are reinscribed on one another, and in cultures and ideologies of dominance; that fascist acts of extermination are important to understand in relation to women and issues of gender, because the forms of reality production that are constantly present and possible within fascism are to be seen in the relations of male to female; and, that those relations of power existed not only in Nazi Germany, at a particular time in a particular place, but are our relations of power, here and still. Finally, it strikes me that we who are women may be in a different, and more terrible, kind of trouble than we think. That terrible trouble is about the conviction that in the reinscription of violence and eroticism on one another, that which is salient In fascism ideology and practice is hidden-in-plain-sight In modern and liberal ideologies, meanings and practices. Accordingly, our technical procedures are peri- ^odically set forth in ''Scope and Methods of the Statistical Reporting Service," and the agency's early development and program expansion were presented in "The Story of Agricultural Estimates." However, most important are the people who de- veloped this complex and efficient statistical service for agriculture and those who maintain and expand it today. Dr. Harry C. Trelogan, SRS Administrator, 1961-1975, arranged for Emerson M. Brooks to prepare this informal account of some of the people who steered SRS's course from 1933 to 1961. The series of biographical sketches selected by the author are representative of the people who helped develop the per- sonality of SRS and provide the talent to meet challenges for accurate and timely agricultural information. This narrative touching the critical issues of that period and the way they'^ were resolved adds to our understanding of the agency and helps maintain the esprit de corps that has strengthened our work since it started in 1862.     ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED by Anna Schafer Most of us have read the story of Anne Frank and her diary. In much of the world it has been part of the school curriculum ever since the book's first publication in 1947. Anne’s main message has always been seen as one of optimism and conciliation in the face of the utter barbarism of her time. At the age of 14, in her diary entrance of the 15th of July, 1944. she makes her famous statement: “Still, I keep my ideals, because, in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.“ (p.237) Anne was born July 12 1929 in Frankfurt. Because of rising Anti-Semitism the family left Germany in 1933 and settled in the Netherlands. I myself was born ten years later, in April 1939 in Vienna, a year after the annexation of Austria and six months before the German attack on Poland. When I was three I was sent by train to North Germany to non-Jewish relatives, who lived in the small village of Andorf, near the Dutch border. Anne and I shared our first names, Anne. We also shared two languages and cultures, German and Dutch. However, Anne knew that her family was in hiding because they were Jews. I did not discover my Jewishness until I was an adult. We both lived through all six years of WWII. They were Anne’s last and my first years of life. There are barely 200 km between Amsterdam and Andorf and the Bergen- Belsen camp where Anne died in early March 1945 is only 150 km east of Andorf.

We live in an era marked by an explosion of information, as illustrated by the fact that the amount of information doubles every year. The cultural change of a revolutionary nature we are now observing, one element of which is development of the Internet towards the Web 3.0 model, is associated with depletion the culture of writing and the cognitive apparatus associated with it; that is, cause and eff ect thinking, linear understanding of time, and an objectivist understanding of the world. The omnipresent electronic media, which use an entire range of audio-visual means of communication, are main “production techniques” of culture, including the current visual culture. They consti- tute the context in which schools function and, at the same time, they pose a considerable risk to them. The computer is almost as common today as a wristwatch, and the owner has immediate access, at any time, to all contents and services in all forms that are available on the Internet.

    1 CREATORS, CREATURES AND VICTIM-SURVIVORS: WORD, SILENCE AND SOME HUMANE VOICES OF SELF- DETERMINATION IN APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE FROM THE WYCLIFFE BIBLE OF 1388 TO THE UNITED NATIONS WORLD CONFERENCE ON HUMAN RIGHTS OF 1993 Penelope Susan Keable Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney November, 1994 2 THE TITLE Creators, Creatures And Victim-Survivors: Word, Silence And Some Humane Voices Of Self-Determination In Apocalyptic Literature From The Wycliffe Bible Of 1388 To The United Nations World Conference On Human Rights Of 1993 THE THESIS In contemporary apocalyptic rhetoric, polyvalent figures of victim-survivors augment creator-creature dualism, ancient and current. Particular attention is paid to a shift in the creator-creature motif which was foreshadowed in the writings of Giambattista Vico and has been carried forward into contemporary criticism by Northrop Frye. This pursuit attempts to make available to contemporary concern an appreciation of a variety of concepts of humanity, all of which may contribute to an enhanced toleration of diversity. THE ARGUMENT A very simple argument is pursued against the acceptance of one-eyed visions and univocal utterances in interpretation of apocalyptic rhetoric. It is an argument for paying attention to miscellaneous images and polyvalent utterances. This entails an accommodation in thought of convergent and divergent horizons of imagery. So it is an argument for thoughtful tolerance. 3 ABSTRACT This analysis of apocalyptic rhetoric brings nine generations of the written text of the Johannine Apocalypse into a contemporary (1989-1994) framework which includes phenomena such as self-determination, mutual interdependence and psychoterror.
