Brownies – 1st Welton The Brownies have had a busy few weeks making Christmas trees to decorate the church for Christmas. They finished the term with a ‘carols and chat’ evening. Residents may be entitled to the grant if flood water entered into habitable areas of the residence; flood water did not enter into habitable areas but the local authority deems that the residence was considered unliveable for any period of time; the flooding occurred between 8th and 18th November. There are also other grants available depending on individual circumstances. If you think you may qualify, even if you did not receive a letter, you should contact the WLDC Customer Service Team on 01427 676676. Businesses affected by the severe weather may be eligible for a business recovery grant of up to £2,500 or discounts on their rates. The raffle and cake stall were well supported with the cake stall making a record amount of money. The final figure for the day will be in the region of £760 after the deduction of food expenses and the hire of the hall. Thank you to Kedgeree for donating and rumbling the potatoes, to Rudies Roots for donating the Christmas tree for auction, to all the cake bakers, including the lady who donated the Christmas cake for auction, and to all who donated raffle prizes, bought raffle tickets and supported the event in any way. Karen Lawrence The Bells of St Mary’s, Part 2 In last month’s NEWS, I wrote about the search for new bell ringers, but it’s only due to the efforts of a dedicated group of local residents and a remarkable contribution by some who had no connection with the village at all that we still have any bells. Mike Cosford takes up the story. ‘By 1980 the oak frame which housed the bells and which probably dated from the creation of the tower itself more than 200 years previously had deteriorated badly and was unsafe. A fundraising programme began but 13 years later this had only secured half the £27,500 target. Then, parish councillor Aderyn Walker told me that her husband Gary, an engineer at British Steel in Scunthorpe, wanted to help. A New Collaboration The Welton NEWS has been trying to get younger people involved with the magazine for some time now and we are delighted to report that William Farr students who work on Farrago (see An Exciting New Chapter for Farrago on page 27) are now going to be making a regular contribution to the NEWS.
