Tel: (209) 946 2981 Email: [email protected] 1 The UK Netball Superleague: A Case Study of Franchising in Elite Women's Sport Abstract This paper draws on theories of franchising in examining the emergence of the UK Netball Superleague in 2005. The focus of the paper is to explore the development of an empowered franchise framework as part of England Netball's elite performance strategy and the consequences of the Superleague for player performance, team success, and commercial potential of the franchises. The findings from 22 in-depth interviews conducted between 2008-2011 with franchise personnel and sport media/marketing consultants inform the discussion. The paper further comments on the implications of the empowered franchise system for developing NGB elite performance strategies. Introduction Emerging in the late 19th century as a sport “initially designed and traditionally administered as an activity for promoting appropriate forms of femininity” (Tagg, 2008, p 410), Netball is played by more than 20 million people in over 80 nations across the globe (INFA, 2011). It is an invasion ball game predominantly played by girls and women between teams of 7 players. -

A-Level Preparation Courses 1 From Strathallan Worldwide, Strathallan School, Scotland Introduction Our promise: to know your child as an individual Building on the outstanding success of our Strathallan based A-Level preparation programme – the International Studies Programme or ‘ISP’, now in its third year providing in-school A-Level preparation courses, we are excited to announce a part-time online version for students based overseas: Strathallan Worldwide A-Level Preparation Courses or ‘APCs’. Strathallan School averages 80% A*-B at A-Level and is the winner of the 2020 Independent School of the Year award for International Experience - an award based on knowing our students as individuals. During lockdown in 2020 we delivered over 7000 live lessons online to our students at home and abroad. Our special care of our international students, combined with considerable success through the challenging lockdown period, has led us to the conclusion that we can offer a top-rate UK independent school experience to students who are planning to come to the UK to study key A-Levels in the Sixth Form. Virtual APCs Strathallan Worldwide A-Level Preparation Courses (APCs) enable students to prepare for studying A-Levels in the UK whilst continuing with face-to-face lessons in their schools at home. Principles Athlete Allocation System Preamble The Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF’s) strategic plan ‘Transformation 2022’ is a blueprint which puts athletes at the heart of ambitions for growth and innovation. The strategic plan recognises the rapidly-changing landscape of international sport as we continue to develop the world-class sporting stage that is the Commonwealth Games. Transformation 2022 broadens the CGF’s focus from the four‐year operating cycle of the Games itself to a more far‐reaching role as a global movement focused on partnerships, engagement and value generation that unites athletes, citizens and communities. Transformation 2022 has four strategic objectives: 1. Inspiring and Innovative Games; 2. Good Governance and Management; 3. Strong Partnerships; and 4. A Valued Brand. Complementing Transformation 2022, the updated vision of the CGF is ‘building peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through Sport’. Through Transformation 2022, the CGF has had a revitalised approach to the Sport strategy including: 1. A newly‐approved programme of compulsory and optional sports; 2. An agreement to establish a ‘recognised’ designation for those International Federations developing activities within the Commonwealth; and 3. The endorsement of a sports‐quota system to be implemented at the Durban 2022 Commonwealth Games for the first time. To achieve these strategic goals, a hybrid and transitional model has been agreed for introduction at the next edition of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018 (GC2018). Consequently, the participation of athletes for a select number of sports will be administered through qualification criteria while the remaining sports on the programme will be managed via the existing ‘open-entry’ process. -

VITALITY NETBALL WORLD CUP TO HOST CELEBRITY BBC SPORT RELIEF MATCH VNWC have announced that a special BBC Sport Relief celebrity netball match, hosted by popular presenter Clare Balding, will take place on Friday 19 July, following the day’s World Cup action. Jennifer Saunders will captain one of the teams made up of celebrities and netball legends. She will face tough competition from a star-studded team led by Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse. Oti, who grew up playing netball in South Africa. The match will take place following two World Cup play-off games (teams to be confirmed) and spectators attending session 16 on Friday 19 July will be able to enjoy the exhibition game as part of their session ticket. CONGRATULATIONS MANCHESTER THUNDER 2918 VITALITY SUPERLEAGUE CHAMPIONS Grand Final: 3rd Place Play-off: Manchester Thunder Team Bath beat beat Wasps Loughborough Lightning 57-52 62 - 56 Manchester Thunder came back from 17-12 down at the end of the 1st quarter, 45-39 down at the end of the 3rd quarter to win their third SuperLeague title and their first since 2014. -
