THE SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN BY MAXIMILIAN J. RUDWIN THE Synagogue of Satan is of greater antiquity and potency than the Church of God. The fear of a mahgn being was earher in operation and more powerful in its appeal among primitive peoples than the love of a benign being. Fear, it should be re- membered, was the first incentive of religious worship. Propitiation of harmful powers was the first phase of all sacrificial rites. This is perhaps the meaning of the old Gnostic tradition that when Solomon was summoned from his tomb and asked, "Who first named the name of God?" he answered, "The Devil." Furthermore, every religion that preceded Christianity was a form of devil-worship in the eyes of the new faith. The early Christians actually believed that all pagans were devil-worshippers inasmuch as all pagan gods were in Christian eyes disguised demons who caused themselves to be adored under different names in dif- ferent countries. It was believed that the spirits of hell took the form of idols, working through them, as St. Thomas Aquinas said, certain marvels w'hich excited the wonder and admiration of their worshippers (Siiinina theologica n.ii.94). This viewpoint was not confined to the Christians. It has ever been a custom among men to send to the Devil all who do not belong to their own particular caste, class or cult. Each nation or religion has always claimed the Deity for itself and assigned the Devil to other nations and religions. Zoroaster described alien M^orshippers as children of the Divas, which, in biblical parlance, is equivalent to sons of Belial. -

FALSE MEMORY SYNDROME: "THE FEMALE MALADY" 1 ERIN BRADyt The theory of memory repression has been both relied on by adult survivors as evidence of sexual crimes committed against them, and endorsed by many of the higher courts in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Advocates of the false memory syndrome refute the scientific validity of repressed memories, and vigorously oppose their judicial acceptance, by contending that recovered memories of childhood abuse are more often the product of a therapeudic relationship gone wrong. An examination of the manner in which the false memory syndrome is being pleaded by defence counsel, and heard by Canadian courts, reveals that it is a decidedly gendered phenomenon and employed almost exclusively to describe female experience. The article explores the anti-women stereotypes which underlie the defence and seeks to demonstrate the extent to which the false memory syndrome represents a formidable obstacle to all survivors of sexual abuse seeking legal redress. -

While originally portrayed as a benevolent and caring healer in works by Marie de France, Chretien de Troyes, and the anonymous author of Amadas et Ydoine, the witch eventually underwent a dramatic and unfortunate transformation. By the fifteenth century, authors began to portray her as a malevolent and dangerous agent of the Christian Devil. Martin Le Franc, Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim du Bellay, Fran9ois Rabelais, and Pierre Comeille all created evil witch figures that corresponded with this new definition. It was not until the eighteenth century, through the works of Voltaire and the Encyclopedistes, that the rehabilitation of the witch began. By the twentieth century, Anne Hebert, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maryse Conde, and Sebastiano Vassalli began to rewrite the witch character by engaging in a process of demystification and by demonstrating that the "witch" was really just a victim of the society in which she lived. These authors humanized their witch figures by concentrating on the victimization of their witch protagonists and by exposing the ways in which their fictional societies unjustly created identities for their witch protagonists that were based on false judgments and rumors. -

All conditioning aims at that: making people like their inescapable social destiny. -Aldous Huxley (1932) In the last twenty years, changes in many United States manufacturing plants have prompted some observers to herald the arrival of a second industrial revolution. A cluster of new techniques-including "job rotation," "learning by doing," "flexible production," and 'just-in-time delivery" of component parts-was first adopted in Japan and is now, according to the conventional wisdom, indispensable for competing in the so-called global market place. Among the most significant shifts is the "social organization of production," where work teams and "quality circles" have become the building blocks of tomorrow's work force (Kenney and Florida 1988).1 The quality circle, a committee made up of ten to fifteen workers, analyzes and solves quality control problems and points of contention by using a method of "communal problem- solving." This "soft" approach to management-in which workers are said to manage themselves-received much attention following a lengthy 1981 cover story in Business Week entitled "The New Industrial Relations." From assembly plants, the techniques diffused outward to many American bureaucracies and businesses, including supermarkets, schools, banks, and government offices-including the Pentagon (Schmitt 1994)-to name but a few. The goal was to end the adversarial relationship between management and labor through "self-managed" work teams, and in so doing improve the efficiency and psychological "health" of those involved.
