  • Diocese in Europe Prayer Diary, July to December 2011
DIOCESE IN EUROPE PRAYER DIARY, JULY TO DECEMBER 2011 This calendar has been compiled to help us to pray together for one another and for our common concerns. Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery. We also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, www.aco.org), the World Council of Churches prayer cycle (weekly, www.oikoumene.org, prayer resources on site), the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, www.porvoochurches.org), and festivals and commemorations from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx). Sundays and Festivals, printed in bold type, have special readings in the Common Worship Lectionary. Lesser Festivals, printed in normal type, have collects in the Common Worship Lectionary. Commemorations, printed in italics, may have collects in Exciting Holiness, and additional, non- biblical, readings for all of these may be found in Celebrating the Saints (both SCM-Canterbury Press).

  • Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking
Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking A guide for the Church Community By Alison Ussery, Haven of Light - Foreword from the Bishop of St Asaph - Introduction - Definitions & Facts : Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking : Human Trafficking & People Smuggling : The World Today : The Situation in the UK - Signs & Indicators - A Biblical Perspective - International Action - Practical suggestions of what we can do Foreword from the Bishop of St Asaph Slavery is the sort of word that brings ancient times, or nineteenth century colonialism to mind. We don’t associate it with north Wales in our own society and times. And yet, that is the ugly reality which has been uncovered. In 2019, the Governing Body of the Church in Wales recognised that human trafficking and modern slavery were crimes against humanity, and committed us to exploring every opportunity to play our part in working to combat modern slavery, its prevention, detection, and in offering support for its victims. Ali Ussery, who works with north Wales based Haven of Light to combat modern slavery, has been working with the diocese to help us to understand this contemporary injustice, and to respond at a practical level. This booklet is essential reading and a call for action, and I commend it to you. Bishop Gregory Cameron Definitions & Facts Throughout the world today there are over 40 million men, women and children who have lost their freedom as human beings and are being bought and sold as commodities. The terms ‘modern slavery’ and ‘human trafficking’ are used to describe this serious and growing global crime where criminals are taking advantage of vulnerable people to make a profit, with no care for their wellbeing.

  • Cytûn Policy Bulletin August / September 2021
CYTÛN POLICY BULLETIN AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021 Churches called to act 90 days before international climate conference With only 90 days to go until COP26 - the critical international climate negotiations which the UK government will host and chair in Glasgow in November - a broad coalition of Christian denominations and charities is calling on all churches to hold a local Climate Sunday and commit to effective action themselves, before talks begin. So far, more than 1,700 churches across Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland are taking part and hundreds more are planning to do so. This widespread take up of the initiative across diverse church traditions indicates a growing commitment by churches to act on climate change, and to demand that governments act too. The Climate Sunday Initiative wants to see the UK and Welsh Governments strengthen domestic policies before the international conference, to get the UK back on track with its own emissions targets. It is also calling on the UK Government, in its role as chair of COP26, to seek faster and deeper global emissions cuts and the delivery of long-promised finance to help poorer countries adapt to the climate disruption which they are already experiencing. The Climate Sunday initiative is the broadest-based church response to the climate crisis in the UK in the run-up to COP26. Participating churches are asked to do three things: • Arrange to hold a climate-focused service to explore the science and theology around addressing human-caused climate disruption and register your service by Sept 5th; • commit to taking ongoing practical action themselves.
