SERIES CONCERTS Lully, Lulla: Christmas with TENET Claudio Monteverdi’S Selva Morale E Spirituale Gombert & Poulenc 10 Dear Friends and Supporters, We made it to 10 years! And what a decade it’s been. These pages commemorate a decade of artistic activities for TENET Vocal Artists. They represent a wealth of time, talent, and love spent bringing high quality vocal music to the people of New York City and beyond. There were too many fond memories to include here, but this gives you a taste of our efforts as we look forward to the next 10 years. We began as TENET in the fall of 2009 when I was named artistic director. Born of a desire “to hold on” to something “we believe in” (definitions of tenet), I focused my efforts on project-based programming of early music and I brought the Green Mountain Project into the organization’s fold. Ensemble highlights (2009–2019): • 225+ musicians • 200+ concerts • 6 recordings • glowing reviews from major publications • 15x budget increase • prestigious foundation awards • local, state, and national government arts grants When asked how TENET has achieved its success, I talk about our community. Many friends serve on TENET’s board of directors and board of advisors. Fans who donate and purchase concert tickets. Church leaders allow us to perform in their sacred spaces. Volunteers usher, and host artists and host house concerts. Collaborating ensembles take risks with us. Videographers, audio engineers, photographers, bankers, insurance agents, bookkeepers, wine sellers, administrators, grant writers, media specialists and reviewers, website builders, ticket vendors, taxi drivers. Together, our work touches many lives in this great city. Most of all, I attribute TENET Vocal Artists’ success to the talented musicians who have dedicated their lives to creating music with the hope of making the world a more joyous place. Choosing a life as a performer comes with great challenges and sacrifices that are often unrelated to musical talents. Every person you see on our stage has an interesting story to tell that enriches our performances. I hope to continue honoring their work, and I hope you will join me by staying present as we continue our journey. The ABS produces Bach Notes and Bach Perspectives, sponsors a biennial meeting and conference, and offers grants and prizes for research on Bach. For more information about the Society, please visit www.americanbachsociety.org. The Westfield Center The Westfield Center was founded in 1979 by Lynn Edwards and Edward Pepe to fill a need for information about keyboard performance practice and instrument building in historical styles. In pursuing its mission to promote the study and appreciation of the organ and other keyboard instruments, the Westfield Center has become a vital public advocate for keyboard instruments and music. By bringing together professionals and an increasingly diverse music audience, the Center has inspired collaborations among organizations nationally and internationally. In 1999 Roger Sherman became Executive Director and developed several new projects for the Westfield Center, including a radio program, The Organ Loft, which is heard by 30,000 listeners in the Pacific 2 Northwest; and a Westfield Concert Scholar program that promotes young keyboard artists with awareness of historical keyboard performance practice through mentorship and concert opportunities. In addition to these programs, the Westfield Center sponsors an annual conference about significant topics in keyboard performance.

  • For Most Musicians, Building and Maintaining a Career Substantial
For most musicians, building and maintaining a career substantial enough to last two decades would be an accomplishment worthy of recognition and deserving of celebration. However, while we celebrate Chatham Baroque’s 20 years of excellence, we do so fully understanding that for this group – rightly described as “one of Pittsburgh’s greatest treasures” – time has a different relevance. Today, they mark the grand finale of their 20th season with the Pittsburgh premiere of J.S. Bach’s 1725 St. John Passion. Like much of what Chatham Baroque does, this piece is not well known to modern audiences. Like much of what they have been doing for two decades, they will interpret this music from the 18th century with period instruments and somehow make it relevant to 21st century listeners. That is who they are and that is what they do. At UPMC Health Plan we have always taken seriously our responsibility to help our members enjoy the best quality of life possible. That is why we support Chatham Baroque, a true civic institution that has consistently shown us that quality is not only a priceless commodity, but a timeless one, too. Diane P. • Celebrations from the Mediterranean New York Polyphony
Miller Theatre at Columbia University 2014-15 | 26th Season Early Music Celebrations from the Mediterranean New York Polyphony Saturday, November 15, 8:00 p.m. Church of St. Mary the Virgin From the Executive Director This November at Miller is all about vitality. Cyrus Chestnut is an absolute genius on the piano. I’ve heard him perform at Miller for many years now—long before I became Executive Director—and it’s always a special thrill to hear his stunning improvisations and unique style on our Steinway and in our hall, where each flourish sings. It’s also an absolute joy to welcome Anthony Roth Costanzo to our stage for the first time. The stars aligned to make this Composer Portrait possible: Bernard Rands was completing a new work, ICE expressed great interest in working with him, and Mr. Costanzo had an opening in his schedule—this concert could not have come together more perfectly. New York Polyphony returns with a program to brighten the winter, featuring luxurious works from the Spanish Renaissance. It’s been an ongoing delight to work with this ensemble and to see the acclaim that they’ve garnered since their Miller Theatre debut in 2010. Last year, we commissioned a new piece for them, a work by composer Andrew Smith titled Nowell: Arise and Wake. They premiered it at a snowy concert presented by Miller last December, and the piece is now being highlighted on their album, Sing thee Nowell. I feel lucky to follow the accomplishments of the talented musicians we work with here, and if you’ve been coming to Miller over the years, you may feel the same way.
