Editorial In this issue we remember two former Olympians who died in June this year. They were both heavyweight entertainers that could not fail to make you smile whenever they appeared on television. Due to extensive video recordings of both Muhammad Ali and Bud Spencer we can always revisit our memories of them and it will always be a pleasure to do so. In this issue there are a number of Rio 2016 issues with more to come in the next issue of Torch Bearer. Do not hesitate to send articles on new discoveries for future issues. Since the sad loss of the SOC's Librarian, Kenny Cook, nobody has offered to carry out that role. Without that support it was necessary for the society to review the continued maintenance of the library and the Torch Bearer back issues service. Two copies of every issue of Torch Bearer are archived for reference. The SOC can no longer offer a back issues sales service without the support of a Librarian, however, members may contact David Frome for copies of past articles or issues. All books and publications in the SOC library have been sorted for disposal and members will receive full details of arrangements for disposal in a future edition of Torch Bearer. Do not hesitate to contact Bob Wilcock if you feel that you can fulfill the Librarian's role, before the library is disposed of, to save the library. 26 Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali by Mike Pagomenos On 3rd June 2016 the boxing gold medallist formerly known as Cassius Clay died, aged 74, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Muhammad Ali's life has been documented so extensively that there is nothing that I can add. However, I thought it would be nice to view some of the souvenirs that remind us of when he was called Cassius Clay for his achievement in Rome in 1960. He was the first Italian to swim the 100m freestyle in under one minute and competed for Italy in the semi-finals of that event at both Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956. He also participated at Rome 1960. Like the Olympian swimmer Johnny Weissmuller he too became a much-loved actor. Carlo's stage name was 'Bud Spencer'. He starred in many movies together with Terence Hill. Carlo was a multi-talented individual who competed internationally in both swimming and water polo. He studied chemistry and law at university. He became a famous actor, film producer and director. As evidenced in his movies he could drive or pilot virtually any vehicle. Carlo not only drove motorcycles and trucks since he could pilot airplanes and helicopters. He founded a successful airline called Mistral Air in 1981 which is now owned by Poste Italiane and TNT.

BUD SPENCER ÉS TERENCE HILL FILMJEINEK SIKERE MARKETINGES SZEMMEL PAPP-VÁRY ÁRPÁD FERENC PHD Bud Spencer és Terence Hill a filmtörténelem egyik, ha nem a legismertebb párosa. Bár fő mozis sikereik a hetvenes években és a nyolcvanas évek első felében születtek, filmjeik sokadik ismétlése mind mai a napig százezreket ültet a képernyő elé.

Issue #72 Summer / Fall 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 2) A Man, a Colt The MGM Rolling Road Show Latest DVD Reviews WAI! #72 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS April and May were months that took a number of well known actors of the Spaghetti western genre: Jacques Berthier, Robert Hundar, John Phillip Law and Tano Cimarosa were all well known names in the genre. Of course we should expect as much since these people are now well into their 70s and even 80s. Still in our minds they are young vibrant actors who we see over and over again on video and DVD. It’s hard to realize that it’s been 40+ years since Sergio Leone kicked off the Spaghetti western craze and launched a world wide revolution in film that we still see influencing films today. Hard to believe Clint Eastwood turned 78 on May 30th. Seems like only yesterday he was the ‘Man with No Name’ and starring in the first of the Leone films that launched the genre. Remember when Clint was criticized so badly as an actor and for the films he appeared in during the 60s and 70s. Now he’s revered in Hollywood because he’s outlived his critics. I guess we recognized a real star long before the critics did. A great idea came to Tim League’s mind in the launching of the “Rolling Road Show”, where films are actually shown where they were filmed. I wasn’t able to travel to Spain to see the Dollars trilogy but we have a nice review of the films and the experience by someone who was there.

PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. • Bud Spencer: Il Nuotat(T)Ore

DESCRIPTORS Blacks; *Children; *Community Problems; *Context Effect; Family Violence; Foreign Countries; Longitudinal Studies; *Mass Media Effects; Parent Child Relationship; *Violence IDENTIFIERS *South Africa ABSTRACT This report presents a contextualization of violence in the lives of South African black children, as well as the theoretical foundations, methodology and preliminary results of the first and second part of a longitudinal study to investigate the influence of violent television images on the behavior of these children. This influence is analyzed in the context of various other factors that can contribute to the development of an aggressive lifestyle among young black children. These factors include: inadquate education; poverty; political system; the replacement of the extended family in mass urban black communities; poor housing; and a lack of essential facilities. Subjects were 348 children in grades 2 and 3. Data were collected from four sources--the child, the child's peers, the child's parents, and school personnel--by means of individual, face-to-face interviews in which questionnaires and structured interview schedules were used. It was found that exposure to television violence was low and played an insignificant part in the 1;ves of these children and their parents, while exposure to community violence seems to have played a significant part in the lives of both children and parents.

The Westminster Law & Theory Lab Non Liquet [The Westminster Online Working Papers] Law and the Senses Series SMELL April, 2015 Odore di Napoli: What if Jurisprudence Came to us through Smell? Patrícia Branco* and Richard Mohr† Abstract: Observing the differences between insiders' and outsiders' perceptions of the smells of Naples, we draw parallels with different views of law. Insiders relate to the smells of the city as a complex olfactory web that defines places and regulates time. Outsiders generally privilege the sense of sight over smell, admiring the views while admonishing the inhabitants for the stenches that arise from piles of garbage or filthy habits. Legal outsiders observe regularities in behaviour that indicate the presence of laws. On the other hand, law is also seen as a set of rules to which one must conform (which Hart regards as the insiders' view). Rules and regularities seem inadequate to understand the complex ways Neapolitans negotiate their olfactory and legal environment. They can smell the rotting garbage and the stench of the Camorra, but these are only a background to everyday life and the regular round of meals and seasons, feasts and festivals, that make up their own smellscapes. This takes us beyond the Enlightenment's lines of sight and monolithic view of law to appreciate a Baroque interlegality, inhabited by bodies and experienced in smells. If sight is linked to rules (from the laws of perspective to the rule of recognition), then smell promotes judgment of the sort that Gracián considered necessary to negotiate an ingenious and prudent passage through life.
