Editorial In this issue we remember two former Olympians who died in June this year. They were both heavyweight entertainers that could not fail to make you smile whenever they appeared on television. Due to extensive video recordings of both Muhammad Ali and Bud Spencer we can always revisit our memories of them and it will always be a pleasure to do so. In this issue there are a number of Rio 2016 issues with more to come in the next issue of Torch Bearer. Do not hesitate to send articles on new discoveries for future issues. Since the sad loss of the SOC's Librarian, Kenny Cook, nobody has offered to carry out that role. Without that support it was necessary for the society to review the continued maintenance of the library and the Torch Bearer back issues service. Two copies of every issue of Torch Bearer are archived for reference. The SOC can no longer offer a back issues sales service without the support of a Librarian, however, members may contact David Frome for copies of past articles or issues. All books and publications in the SOC library have been sorted for disposal and members will receive full details of arrangements for disposal in a future edition of Torch Bearer. Do not hesitate to contact Bob Wilcock if you feel that you can fulfill the Librarian's role, before the library is disposed of, to save the library. 26 Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali by Mike Pagomenos On 3rd June 2016 the boxing gold medallist formerly known as Cassius Clay died, aged 74, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Muhammad Ali's life has been documented so extensively that there is nothing that I can add. However, I thought it would be nice to view some of the souvenirs that remind us of when he was called Cassius Clay for his achievement in Rome in 1960. Be aware that there are many vendors of Rome 1960 boxing tickets that associate any boxing ticket with Cassius Clay and the light heavyweight competition. However, light heavyweight competition tickets are easily identifiable because they clearly show 'Classe II' on the ticket. Czeslaw Slania was a world renowned Polish engraver who engraved stamps and bank notes for many countries around the world. He was the first Italian to swim the 100m freestyle in under one minute and competed for Italy in the semi-finals of that event at both Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956. He also participated at Rome 1960. Like the Olympian swimmer Johnny Weissmuller he too became a much-loved actor. Carlo's stage name was 'Bud Spencer'. He starred in many movies together with Terence Hill. Carlo was a multi-talented individual who competed internationally in both swimming and water polo. He studied chemistry and law at university. He became a famous actor, film producer and director. As evidenced in his movies he could drive or pilot virtually any vehicle. Carlo not only drove motorcycles and trucks since he could pilot airplanes and helicopters. He founded a successful airline called Mistral Air in 1981 which is now owned by Poste Italiane and TNT.
