From the turmoil to the near future: challenges for democracy, economy, culture and human rights in Brazil’ on 20/07/2016. This is an image of Karl Marx wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses with a Marshall McLuhan sentence that urges us to pay attention to the medium and its effects. Marx himself called on the proletariat of the world to take control of the mediums of production. Media mediates between us and much of our reality. It can be considered an environment, we see, hear, speak and get in touch with media. We experience a mass-media mediated world. Would it be possible for the nation state to exist today without newspapers radio or television, roads, airports and other forms of communication? If holding power depends on the control of communication, transformations in communication can change power structures. Democracy, as we know it today, is, in some way, an invention of the print era: Constitutions are paper politics, paper made to last. Many argue that in this age – when electricity affords an unprecedented global connectivity – ordinary people have taken control of the medium of media production without ever owning it entirely. You buy a cellphone, but Facebook is free. The total-connectivity of the electric medium will then facilitate the emergence of marginalized groups as political actors. They can no longer be contained, in the political sense of limited association (McLuhan).

La Consumación de la Independencia en la villa española de Santiago del Saltillo, capital del estado de Coahuila desde 1833, fue un movimiento económico y político auspiciado por los miembros del estrato prominente, quienes se rehusaban a continuar tolerando la desmedida afectación de sus intereses por parte de la corona española. En realidad, desde medio siglo antes del apogeo de las Reformas Borbónicas, con el establecimiento generalizado de la alcabala ―en el año de 1728―, las provincias nor-orientales del Imperio Español empezaron a sentir ―y a resentir― las continuas y cada vez más crecientes modificaciones impositivas dictadas por el gobierno colonial, como debió ocurrir en otros sitios de la Nueva España. He was charged with being a "terrorist" and a communist sympathizer and was brutally tortured and imprisoned in a concentration camp.l During one of his most brutal torture sessions, his torturers telephoned his 33-year-old wife and made her listen to her husband's agonizing screams.

Barr-Melej This dissertation examines the struggle between Chile’s opposition press and the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (1973-1990). It argues that due to Chile’s tradition of a pluralistic press and other factors, and in bids to strengthen the regime’s legitimacy, Pinochet and his top officials periodically demonstrated considerable flexibility in terms of the opposition media’s ability to publish and distribute its products. However, the regime, when sensing that its grip on power was slipping, reverted to repressive measures in its dealings with opposition-media outlets. Meanwhile, opposition journalists challenged the very legitimacy Pinochet sought and further widened the scope of acceptable opposition under difficult circumstances. Ultimately, such resistance contributed to Pinochet’s defeat in the 1988 plebiscite, initiating the return of democracy.
