The Anti-Monopoly Fund (AMF) is part of Hughes’ Economic Security Project. According to the group, the AMF will “fill a need of directing resources to organize and expand the efforts of groups that are already working on creating fair markets and implementing smart anti-monopoly enforcement and policy.” In a statement, Hughes said the AMF is being created “at a pivotal moment where cultural and political momentum are aligned to rein in the unchecked behavior of Big Tech,” but that the fund would also put its attention toward powerful industries outside of the tech sector. “There is also a need and opportunity to take meaningful action on monopoly power across industries that’s led to corporate interests in the driver’s seat of our political and economic system for far too long,” Hughes said. Hughes garnered widespread attention when, in May, he wrote a lengthy piece for the New York Times arguing that U.S. federal regulators need to break up Facebook. Among the reasons Hughes gave for his position was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s 60% ownership of the company’s voting shares, which Hughes argued gives the Facebook founder “unprecedented and un-American” power to establish the policies and direction of the company. The AMF has already signed on some notable backers, including George Soros’ Open Society Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Knight Foundation and Redwood City-based Omidyar Network, which was started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. According the AMF, the fund is set up to operate only until March 2021. By using such a finite time frame, the group will be able to “remain agile in strategy and resource allocation,” AMF said in a statement. Facebook didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Hughes’ new fund. The Arts [email protected] - Volume 119 | Issue 8 - EdinboroNow.com - (814) 732-2266

Thursday, October 24, 2019 Section A n Page 6 Songs that make me happy By Madi Gross Staff Writer Music has always been a huge part of my life. I grew up listening to all different genres, while playing various instruments such as bass, guitar and piano, as well as singing along to anything I knew. I have several playlists I go to when needing a pick-me-up, or when I want to be in an even better mood. These are just a few of those songs.

Tears for Fears — “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” This song should be on everybody’s “Songs that make me happy” list. It’s hard not singing along with the catchy bridge, chorus and verses of this track. It may have been released in 1985, but it’s such a good one that I listen to it almost daily over 30 years later.

Dierks Bentley — “Drunk on a Plane” I’m a newer listener to the country genre, but when Dierks Bentley starts the chorus of, “BUYING DRINKS FOR EVERYBODY,” you know I’m singing right along. The song is a breakup story, but turns the breakup into a party. It’s very upbeat and one of my go-to tracks to listen to when I need powered up. Anisa Venner-Johnston | @edinboronow Athletes protesting can be double-edge sword

By Chase Rowland Staff Writer We’ve seen it before. Professional athletes have used their platform to discuss their concerns, or to publicly hope for change in our society and political system. Colin Kaepernick — the former 49ers quarterback who chose to kneel during the national anthem at NFL games — is a prime example of making a statement in the face of millions watching at home (including politicians). Kaepernick’s decision to kneel was simple: it was a bold statement to seek change for the mistreatment of African Americans and other minorities in the U.S. It focused around law enforcement shootings. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kapernick said. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” The actions from Kaepernick that day, and from then on, drove people to have conversations on if what he was doing was admirable or unjust. Anyone who has strong enough morals can change the world for the better, even when many people do not see it that way. Three years later, the former quarterback is still seeking employment from any willing NFL team. Many athletes shy away from stirring the pot for fear of being scrutinized or fired for what they believe. Evidence suggests that’s what happened to Kaepernick. We view athletes in a different light compared to other figures in society. They have larger-than-life personas that evoke heroic traits and inspire people to do better, but we forget professional athletes are also human beings. They have views on politics, social injustices and want to seek change for the world. Having a large platform to express your concerns is something many people don’t have these days. Many people argue that sports and politics should be kept in separate rooms and never be spoken of in the same utterance. If athletes want to go talk politics, it shouldn’t be on a sportscast, they say, but a news show. However, this ideology is wrong. The world of professional sports is an untapped gold mine for endorsing all sorts of things. If you see a professional athlete make a gesture, act in accordance to a belief, or make a statement, people will see it and comment on it. Photo: Nhat V.
