2.10 Introduction to Pacific Review of Pacific Collections Collections: Material Culture in Scottish Museums of the Hawaiian Islands Produced as part of Pacific Collections in Scottish Museums: Unlocking their knowledge and potential project 2013-2014. For full information and resources visit www.nms.ac.uk/pacific The following material culture styles have particularly distinctive elements but broad collections are not commonly found in Scottish museums. Hawaiian Islands The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of volcanic origin located in north east Polynesia. There are eight main islands as well as smaller islands, atolls and islets. The largest island is Hawai’i. The other main inhabited islands are: O’ahu, Maui, Kaua’i, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Ni’hau, and Kaho’olawe. The islands were first settled in 1,300 from the south, most likely the Society Islands. The distance from other parts of Polynesia meant that Hawaiians developed distinctive forms of chieftainship, religious practices and material culture. The first European recorded to have visited the Hawaiian Islands was Captain James Cook in early 1778 on his third voyage, who named the archipelago the Sandwich Islands after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. Cook met his death there in February 1779. Kamehameha, who was a late 18th century Chief on the island of Hawai’i, attempted to gain control over the whole island group. By 1810 he had established a monarchy which ruled for most of the 19th century. At this time the Hawaiian Islands were recognised by foreign powers as a sovereign nation. Kamehameha’s son Liholiho (Kamehameha II) and Queen Kamamalu visited London on a state visit to George IV where they tragically died in 1824 after contracting measles. -

UCLA Working Papers in Linguistics, Theories of Everything Volume 17, Article 7: 43-58, 2012 Nominal Tense in Tsou: Nia and Its Syntax/Semantics* Henry Y. Chang This paper investigates nominal tense (NT) in the Formosan language Tsou. In light of the NT diagnostics proposed in Nordlinger and Sadler (2004), this paper analyzes the nominal temporal marker nia as an instance of Independent NT (INT), heading a DP-internal tense phrase (TP). The INT-analysis explains nicely why (i) nia makes a temporal distinction of past versus nonpast within a noun phrase, (ii) nia cannot be replaced by a verbal tense/mood auxiliary, (iii) the meaning of nia is rather abstract—nia applies widely to nouns of various kinds, including nouns denoting artifacts, location and time, (iv) nia is normally preceded by a case marker, (v) a verb is required to undergo nominalization upon patterning with nia, (vi) nia is compatible both with definite and indefinite noun phrases, (vii) nia can co-occur either with a realis auxiliary or an irrealis auxiliary. These findings may advance our understanding of Tsou nominal structure on the one hand and shed new lights on the universal nominal structure on the other (cf. Cinque 2005, 2011). Keywords: Tsou, nominal temporal marker, independent nominal tense, past versus nonpast, nominal structure. 1 Introduction It is generally held that temporal information is characteristic of verbal categories and normally marked on them. However, recent studies have shown that temporal marking is also possible and productive with nominal categories across many genetically unrelated languages. The major debate in this connection is whether nominal temporal markers are instances of nominal tense (Nordlinger and Sadler 2004, 2008, Tonhauser 2007, 2008). -

Many assertions in the literature about the origins of particular species are found to be without empirical basis. In the absence of other data, comparative linguistics is an important source for tracing the spread of some fruits. Contrary to the Pacific, it seems that many of the fruits we now consider characteristic of the region may well have spread in recent times. Sacred Kingship: Cases from Polynesia Henri J. M. Claessen Leiden University ABSTRACT This article aims at a description and analysis of sacred kingship in Poly- nesia. To this aim two cases – or rather island cultures – are compared. The first one is the island of Tahiti, where several complex polities were found. The most important of which were Papara, Te Porionuu, and Tautira. Their type of rulership was identical, so they will be discussed as one. In these kingdoms a great role was played by the god Oro, whose image and the belonging feather girdles were competed fiercely. The oth- er case is found on the Tonga Islands, far to the west. Here the sacred Tui Tonga ruled, who was allegedly a son of the god Tangaloa and a woman from Tonga. Because of this descent he was highly sacred. In the course of time a new powerful line, the Tui Haa Takalaua developed, and the Tui Tonga lost his political power. In his turn the Takalaua family was over- ruled by the Tui Kanokupolu. The tensions between the three lines led to a fierce civil war, in which the Kanokupolu line was victorious. The king from this line was, however, not sacred, being a Christian. 1. INTRODUCTION Polynesia comprises the islands situated in the Pacific Ocean within the triangle formed by the Hawaiian Islands, Easter Island and New Zealand. The islanders share a common Polynesian culture. This cultural unity was established already in the eighteenth century, by James Cook, who ob- served during his visit of Easter Island in 1774: In Colour, Features, and Languages they [the Easter Islanders] bear such an affinity to the People of the more Western isles that no one will doubt that they have the same Origin (Cook 1969 [1775]: 279, 354–355). -

John Davies, quoted Judges 18:7 in seeing the Rapans as ‘dwelling carelessly, quiet and secure, and having no business with any man’ (in Stokes n.d.:28; an idiomatic rendering of the passage). It was to some extent, possibly to a great extent, quite illusory. Rapa was certainly isolated by comparison with most of East Polynesia, and it was small, mountainous and relatively cold, but even the first European visitors found that Rapans exhibited evidence of contact with the outside world, and within Rapan traditions, historical observations and ethnographic data which together form the stuff of ethnohistory, the theme of contact and change is illustrated continually. Rapan society was East Polynesian in ancestry and culture. Rapans spoke an East Polynesian language, but its closest affinities were puzzling for a long time. The earliest historical contacts with Rapans showed that they found both Hawaiian and Tahitian largely unintelligible and later characterisation of Rapan by European scholars was confused because of the early introduction of Tahitian by missionaries and, after 1863, of other Polynesian languages by Tongans, Tokelauans and Cook Islanders, whose descendants came eventually to represent nearly half of the population (Stokes 1955). Samuel Stutchbury had observed, presciently, in 1826 (in Richards 2004:5) that the Rapan language was ‘something resembling the Marquesan’, but Horatio Hale (1968:141), about 1840, ‘obtained at Tahiti, from a native of Rapa, a brief vocabulary of the language spoken there, which turns out to be, with a few verbal exceptions, pure Rarotongan, and this in its minute peculiarities’, while the missionaries William Ellis (1838) and M. -

The research used both qualitative and quantitative knowledge/data gathered from six villages in Viti Levu, Fiji Islands, to determine, first, the perception(s) of THPs among the iTaukei; second, what THPs successfully survive and are still important to the iTaukei way of life; and third, what factors influence the iTaukei’s health-seeking behavior or choices between Western and traditional medical systems in their villages. Results confirm that the knowledge healers used to hold to cure common illnesses is now more dispersed and shared with community members; healers/elders’ roles in iTaukei villages are important for cultural–spiritual–social causes of illnesses, and for more complex cases, there are specialized iTaukei healers. Today I am going to speak about 'Intelligence and the appreciation of music among critics.' The subject is very similar... Eric Satie, quoted by Machlis (1979, p. 124). 1. Introduction The aesthetic evaluation of artworks (paintings, literature, movies, musical compositions or interpreters, etc.) is, and always has been, a very controversial exercise. Philosophers, starting with Plato, are not the only ones who keep arguing about beauty. Mathematicians (including Leibnitz, Euler, Helmholtz, and Weyl), physiologists (Fechner), biologists (Rashevsky, the founder of mathematical biology) or economists (Bentham and others) also tried to contribute to the field, without any obvious pathbreaking or definitive view. We find it convenient to follow Shiner (1996) and distinguish philosophers who suggest that beauty lies in the artwork itself, and those who like Hume (1757, p. 6) believe that "[b]eauty is no quality in things themselves: it exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty." Beauty as an attribute of a work Trying to break an artwork into attributes (also called "properties" by analytic philosophers, and "characteristics" or "qualities" by economists) is as old as Aristoteles, who in his Poetics suggests that an object is defined by the intersection of its essential attributes.
