• 'Living Like a King? the Entourage of Odet De Foix, Vicomte De Lautrec
2015 II ‘Living Like a King? The Entourage of Odet de Foix, Vicomte de Lautrec, Governor of Milan’, Philippa Woodcock, University of Warwick, Department of History, Article: Living Like a King Living Like a King? The Entourage of Odet de Foix, Vicomte de Lautrec, Governor of Milan Philippa Woodcock Abstract: In the early sixteenth century, the de Foix family were both kin and intimate councillors to the Valois kings, Louis XII and François I. With a powerbase in Guyenne, the de Foix tried to use their connections at court to profit from the French conquest of Milan, between 1499 and 1522. This paper will explore the career of one prominent family member, Odet de Foix, vicomte de Lautrec (1483-1528). Lautrec was a Marshal of France, who served in Italy as a soldier and governor. He was key to the royal entourage, amongst François I’s intimates at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. His sister, Françoise, was also the king’s mistress. The paper will examine Lautrec’s entourage from two aspects. Firstly, it presents how Lautrec established his entourage from his experience in Navarre and Italy and as a mem- ber of the royal retinue. It establishes the importance of familial and regional ties, but also demonstrates the important role played by men of talent. Secondly, it explores Lautrec’s relationship to his entourage once he became governor of Milan. Were ties of blood, ca- reer or positions of Italian prestige the most important aspects for a governor when he chose his intimates? Were compromises made with Italian traditions and elites to sustain his rule? Did he learn from the experience and failures of previous governors? This article contributes to a gap in scholarship for the later period of French Milan from 1515 to 1522.

SUMMARY The ultimate scope of this archival research is the history of the Jewish presence in Venice before the creation of the ghetto (1516).

  • IN MEDIAS RES: the LIFE of CLAUDE DE SEYSSEL for The
CHAPTER ONE IN MEDIAS RES: THE LIFE OF CLAUDE DE SEYSSEL For the historian, Claude de Seyssel has proved to be an extremely elusive gure. Unlike many of his contemporaries including Erasmus, who used friendly correspondence to boost his standing in the world of letters, Seyssel shunned even the most common forms of humanist self-promotion. He did not write many eloquent letters, and he seems to have had few friends, at least at the French court. All that remains of his correspondence is a collection of dry diplomatic dispatches. Clearly, he preferred the day-to-day, concrete world of shifting diplo- macy and policy-making to participation in the nascent Republic of Letters. Although he often appeared as a scholar, translating ancient histories, giving elaborate orations at court, and writing well-crafted works glorifying the French monarch, Seyssel’s biography indicates that at least during his lifetime, his identity as a scholar was overshadowed by his role as a political actor. Scholarship functioned as a tool in the service of his career as a diplomat and military advisor. He appears as a gure struggling to maneuver in a world characterized by the constant twists and turns of sixteenth century diplomacy, and reveals how the experience of political chaos lay at the heart of his search for order and stability.1 Seyssel was born around 1450 in Aix-les-Bains in the duchy of Savoy. Situated in the western Alps with its capital at Chambéry, the duchy of Savoy began as a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages.

  • Reform and High Politics in France 1517-1525
CCHA Study Sessions, 36(1969), 57-77 Reform and High Politics in France 1517-1525 by Henry HELLER University of Manitoba In the period 1517 to 1525 Germany, ahead of all other countries, attracts the eye of the historian. The dramatic train of events which unfolded there following the posting of academic theses at Wittenberg – the Leipzig Debate, the Diet of Worms, the Knights’ War, finally, the Peasant’s Revolt – affords the uncanny sensation of a world shifting on its axis. Germany in these years is without doubt at the centre of European history. Indeed, developments th ere were closely followed by contemporaries throughout the rest of Europe. And in a way which p aral lels reaction to subsequent major upheavals like the French or Russian Revolutions, the religious reformation in Germany gradually had its effects on every European country.1 France is a particularly clear example of the transfer of these revolutionary currents. Its close proximity to Germany and its large and influential intellectual elite concentrated at such centres as Paris, Orleans and Lyons made it particularly open to new influences from across the Rhine. Luther’s name was known within months of the outbreak of the struggle in Germany and his works were being read at Paris as early as May, 1519.2 The submission of the proceedings of the Leipzig Debate between Luther and Johann Eck of the following summer to the judgment of the Sorbonne, stirred further widespread interest. Until a prohibition was imposed in March, 1521, Luther’s writings appear to have widely and freely circulated in the kingdom.3 Indeed, the prohibition of Lutheran books at that time as well as later did not create an effective obstacle to their dissemination.

Patterns in the Construction of Public Discourse 62 Milton N. CAMPOS Argumentum. Journal of the Seminar of Discursive Logic, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric 14 (1) : 63-83, 2016 The New Body Politic of the Renaissance in the Works of John Fortescue and Claude de Seyssel Andrei SALAVASTRU “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iași (Romania) Abstract: The use of corporal analogies, where the state was compared with the human body, had been a frequent occurrence in medieval political theory starting from the twelfth century and they can be encountered in some of the most influential political treatises of that period. It was a strong metaphor employed in order to strengthen the author‟s message – therefore, its use continued past the Middle Ages and well into the Renaissance period. Yet, the respective metaphor did not remain unchanged – on the contrary, the many changes which occurred during the fifteenth century had a noticeable impact upon it, leading to alterations in the traditional version, while retaining many of the old features. This article aims to provide an analysis of the shift which occurred during late fifteenth century and early sixteenth century by analyzing the cases of two of the most significant political writers of that period in England and France: John Fortescue and Claude de Seyssel. Keywords: body politic, Claude de Seyssel, John Fortescue, corporal analogy, humours. 1. The Concept of Body Politic and its Use in Medieval Political Thought During the Middle Ages, starting from the twelfth century, political theory witnessed the employment of an analogy between the human body and the polity, where the latter was described in what one could call “corporal terms”: the structure of the state was considered to imitate that of the body and the same was thought about the way both 64 Andrei SALAVASTRU functioned.

  • Mystifying the Monarch
omslag Monarch 31-10-2006 11:04 Pagina 1 Mystifying the Monarch The monarchy: no other political institution proved to be so durable and flexible through its age-long history. Despite the modernization, seculari- zation, and bureaucratization of power, the affective, archaic, and almost timeless relationship between sovereigns and their ‘subjects’ still prevails in several countries. Though troubled by the many recent scandals of their royals, many courts continue to perceive that the perennial maxim ‘the King can do no wrong’ has lost none of its strength. Yet the staging and sacralization of the monarchy in Western Europe have always been interwoven with practices of subversion and banalization. The different discourses aiming at the symbolic construction of royal power can not be studied without considering at the same time the popular appropriation of the official rhetoric. Hence, this collection of essays does not propose a strictly linear narrative from medieval sacralization to postmodern demystification of kingship. Choosing the perspective of the long run between the twelfth and the first half of the twentieth century, it clearly shows how the mystification and demystification of the monarch have always been two sides of the same coin. • 52 Soviet-Era Kozintsev and Welles in Hollywood Are Not Notably Sensi
52 SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NEWS Soviet-era Kozintsev and Welles in Hollywood are not notably sensi- tive to Christian elements, and Luhrmann’s treatment of Catholic im- agery is not exactly subtle. The final chapter engages such critics who are alert to religious ideas as G. Wilson Knight and Roland Frye, and Baker properly responds to the issues raised by Stephen J. Greenblatt in Hamlet and Purgatory. But elsewhere in the book Baker misstates some crucial facts (Savonarola was burnt, not hanged; Erasmus was associated with Cambridge, not Oxford), and he cites approvingly the work of A. G. Dickens, whose partisan treatment of Protestantism has now largely been derided as naive and simplistic. Worse, he fails to engage at length the most recent scholarship on the persistence of Catholic faith in Shakespeare’s age, as in the work ofEamon Duffy and Richard Wilson. The collection of primary documents may well be helpful to students, but a number of the choices are readily avail- able elsewhere. Surely the space devoted to reprinting the Bower of Bliss episode from Book II of The Faerie Queene could have been given to key texts that are harder to find in literary anthologies, such as Hugh Latimer’s Sermon of the Plough. Also, a caveat about the cover illustration: the well-known painting of the interior of the Temple of Lyon is fine, but surely an English illustration would have been more to the point. This book is an interesting grab-bag, but one has to won- der how useful the student or the general reader will actually find it.
