Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

In India there are more than 150 movies and 40 T.V shows approximately produced on the historical events and records. Many of these produced by the various makers to retell the tales of glory and valour of India’s great heroes do provide justice to the heroes to some extent. Authentic and accurate depictions for the sake of knowledge or even getting the glimpses of the history is not the outcome of these shows or movies. Various inconsistencies, differences and various inaccuracies regarding the script, scenes and execution, laymen are often misdirected towards concepts. The idea of creative liberty or artistic license used by the writers to make the best of the historical references provided may cause discrepancies or irregularities difficult to accept by the people or some intellectuals. But, to demand accuracy and authenticity from the Indian historical is, for its fans, to miss the point. The genre, after all, is that the descendant of Indian traditions of myth, folklore, ballads and popular history, which have combined to inform us more about an imagined past than an actual one. -

MY MEMOIRS By BABA MAMA FOREWORD It is a great privilege to write a few words about this book which narrates, in vivid detail, the life story of a family which, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, played an important role in India's battle for freedom from the British Rule, which gave to the country a brilliant, self-less, wise, cultured, learned, courageous and visionary political leader, Shri R K. Salve, and which, in Independent India, has given to the world a Divine Incarnation for the emancipation and evolution of human beings to a higher spiritual plane - Mataji Nirmala Devi. The book, My Memoirs, has been written in his inimitable style, by the youngest member of this illustrious family, H.P.Salve, popularly and affectionately known as Baba Mama. No person is better qualified to write about these jewels of India than Baba Mama. From his birth, he was the darling of the entire family. He had personally lived through the thick and thin of those tumultuous years preceding and following Independence and has enjoyed the trust and affection of all members of his family, especially of Mataji Nirmala Devi. He had been a witness of and participant in all the events which he had recaptured by graphic narration. In essence, the book is a life story of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi who, from the earliest days of her life, has demonstrated her infinite love and compassion for men, women and children, especially children, of all creeds and communities. This book carefully describes Her life stage by stage. In Her childhood, Nirmala displayed qualities which showed that she was a prodigy. -
