Capt Amarinder Singh Leads from the Front V Extends Lockdown to Tame Killer Virus V Clamps Curfew for Smooth Wheat Procurement Let us join hands in fighting COVID-19. A few days of caution and co - operation can save us from a lifetime of regret. We owe it to ourselves and our children to take all precautions against the deadly virus. Like a true fauji the Punjab Chief Minister played the role of a perfect com - manding officer. Without bothering about what the critics would say he was the first one to clamp curfew and close borders, visualizing the disastrous implications the Covid-19 would have on the border state. The curfew in Punjab came one day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a 21-day nation-wide lockdown. After the declaration of the curfew Capt Amarinder Singh took several key steps well in time and showed the guts and gumption to strongly en - force his decisions The Captain’s team went into a crisis management mode, focusing on tracing an odd number of missing NRIs, preparing contingency plans for har - vesting and procurement of a whopping 137 lakh tonnes of wheat crop and finding ways to endure the pandemic’s debilitating effect on the state’s economy. It was a tall order, but the Chief Minister and his dedicated team assessed the challenges ahead and chalked out an action plan. As of now now, there has been no apparent community transmission in Punjab. However, as the danger still looms, escalation cannot be ruled out in the coming days. Capt Amarinder Singh was again among the front-runners when he ex - tended the lockdown and clamped a curfew up to May 1. The fresh spell of lockdown and curfew would avoid overcrowding at mandis thus facilitating smooth procurement of wheat across the state. 137 lakh metric tonnes of wheat is expected to be procured which would go a long way in contributing to the food basket of the nation. This aspect of the man has often overshadowed his considerable contribution as a writer of memorable fiction—Train to Pakistan, I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale (now renamed The Lost Victory), Delhi: a Novel—short stories and non-fiction. The seminal two-volume A History of the Sikhs is even today essential reading for anyone interested in the Sikhs or Sikh history. This collection, culled from the articles and columns that he wrote in the magazines and newspapers he edited and contributed to—the Illustrated Weekly of India, New Delhi, the Hindustan Times, The Tribune, etc.—reflects his intense concern about growing fundamentalism, curiosity about godmen and women and the state of the country and its people. There are also evocative pieces on nature and amusing vignettes on the cities he lived in—Delhi and Bombay and the hill station he escaped to in the summer, Kasauli. Included is a diary from January to November of the traumatic year 1984. Inevitably, the book concludes with ‘Sex Matters’ and a selection of jokes.
