This thesis is dedicated to you. 3 ABSTRACT Although in patriarchal narratives female characters who challenge the dominant power structures of the society in which they live are often condemned for their dangerous sexuality, intelligence and creativity, classical myth continues to be attractive to women writers. In developing their theories of feminist poetics, scholars such as Nancy K. Miller interpret classical women associated with textile production (Arachne, Ariadne and Penelope) as symbols of the woman as artist. There also exists a tradition of female authors rewriting ancient heroines as artists, weavers, storytellers and figures of female wisdom and prophetic power, whose stories have the power to provoke social change. I examine and adapt theories of authorship, influence and reception to a female writing subject. I apply this framework to three case studies, assessing the extent to which female authors have been successful in using classical myth to create positive representations of women, female creativity, voice and influence: the appropriation of Apuleius’ ‘Cupid and Psyche’ and Ovid’s Metamorphoses in fairytales by French salonnières, which then influence Angela Carter’s rewritings of ‘La Belle et la Bête’ in The Bloody Chamber (1979); Mary Shelley’s reworking of Promethean myth and The Arabian Nights in Frankenstein (1818); and Margaret Atwood’s and Ursula Le Guin’s re-figurations of classical heroines in The Penelopiad (2005) and Lavinia (2008). While these authors present interesting and effective techniques of rewriting, they sometimes reproduce a negative discourse of female creative inadequacy and authorial anxiety that does not reflect historical and contemporary reality. Extending Nancy K. Miller’s theory of ‘Arachnologies’, I have developed a new framework for reading women’s rewriting practices. Met. 6.25) Arachne’s retort to the goddess whose mastery she refuses to acknowledge initi- ates a well-known series of events: Arachne ignores the warning of Minerva in dis- guise, wins the weaving contest, and is punished for her victory. All modern English translators understand the sentence to mean something like ‘Let her compete with me; if defeated, there is no penalty I would refuse to pay’ (‘O’).1) I propose quite a diffferent translation of the second clause: ‘there is no reason for me to refuse, defeated’—that is, ‘to admit defeat by refusing to compete’ (‘M’). M aligns better than O with allusions to Virgil’s Turnus, with Arachne’s situation and character, and with the irony of her story’s conclusion.2) In his memorable opening speech in Aeneid 12, Turnus, like Arachne, auda- ciously challenges an adversary whom divine backing makes invincible: 1) Raeburn 2004, 211: ‘ “Let us hold a contest,” she said. “If I’m beaten, I’ll pay any forfeit.” ’ Ambrose 2004, 126: ‘ “Let her compete with me.     Oral Tradition, 10/1 (1995): 207-229 The Three Circuits of the Suitors: A Ring Composition in Odyssey 17-22 Steve Reece Many that are first will be last, and last first. (Mark 10:31) Introduction On three occasions in the Odyssey, Homer draws attention to the arrangement of the suitors as they sit in the hall of Odysseus’ palace: first, when the disguised Odysseus passes from suitor to suitor begging for food; again, when each suitor in turn attempts to string Odysseus’ bow; and, finally, when the suitors are slaughtered in succession at the hands of Odysseus and his small band of followers. On all three occasions—the description of which spans a long stretch of narrative (Books 17-22)— Homer seems to have precisely the same arrangement of suitors in mind. But whereas the sequence in which the suitors are mentioned is the same in the first two circuits, it is exactly reversed in the third. The few meticulous scholars who have noticed this pattern have marshaled it as evidence for their hypothetical reconstructions of the layout of Odysseus’ palace. But Homer’s description of the layout of the palace is ambiguous, and the notorious failure of these scholars, both ancient and modern, to come to a consensus suggests that topographical verisimilitude was not Homer’s primary concern here. Rather, I believe this pattern is an exceptionally well-crafted example of a type of patterning, pervasive in orally composed narrative, known to Hellenists as hysteron-proteron or ring composition. This is not to say that the pattern is merely a mnemonic aid, a means by which the poet may more easily arrange his material and store it in his mind; admittedly, such patterning held a practical function for an orally composing poet, but it also came to have an aesthetic value, providing for the audience a pleasing sense of recognition and ultimately a 208 STEVE REECE satisfying sense of completion.
