A. 1Crop and Soil Science Department, University of Port Harcourt 2Soil Science Department, Abia State University Umudike-Umuahia Campus Abia State 1*[email protected] ABSTRACT Assessment of soil quality of the Ogba-Egbema area of the Sombreiro Warri Deltaic Plain was undertaken by morphological characterization and ranking of soil physical and chemical properties. A total of 80 genetic soil samples from 16 soil profiles and one hundred and twenty (120) random surface samples taken from farm plots along eight (8) transects in the area were studied. The ranking of the eight transects in a descending order was: Akabuka/Obite > Umuoru/Ndoni > Omoku/Egbegoro > Obagi/Ogbogu > Obiafu > Aggah/Egbema > Ebocha/Okwuzi > Omoku/Elele. From the results obtained the top three ranked transects: Akabuka/Obite, Umuoru/Ndoni and Omoku/Egbegoro were rated 59.0, 52.0 and 42.7% respectively of the various parameters qualifying for high fertility indices while the three transects with lowest quality (Aggah/Egbema, Ebocha/Okwuzi and Omoku/Elele) had only 28.8, 22.7 and 21.0% respectively of sample stations that qualified them for high soil quality status. Five soil properties: drainage, depth, total organic matter, soil colour and texture, were delineated as the minimum data set needed for soil quality determination in the area. Most of the fertility indices were below critical limits as expressed by low ECEC, low organic matter and low available P. -

World Rural Observations 2016;8(1) http://www.sciencepub.net/rural Spatial Patterns Of Community Conflicts (1990-2015) And Its Implication To Rural Development In Rivers State Samuel Bankole Arokoyu and *Evangeline Nkiruka Ochulor Department of Geography and Environmental Science Faculty of Social Science, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State [email protected] Abstract: Community conflict patterns and frequency vary in space and thus the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in conflict management is highly required in contemporary time. This study therefore investigated the spatial pattern and variations in the frequency of community conflict in Rivers State, Nigeria between 1990 and 2015. The locations of all communities that have experienced conflict were mapped with global positioning system. Imageries of rural development indices (infrastructural poverty index and accessibility) and land sat images of 2014 for land use patterns were acquired for the study from United States Geological Survey. The spatial pattern of communal conflicts was analysed using nearest neighbour statistic while the relationship between frequency of community conflicts and rural development was analysed using Spearman rank correlation. Findings reveal that the pattern of distribution of communities that have experienced communal conflicts is random (Nearest Neighbour Ratio = 1.0). More communal conflicts occurred in the upland areas (65.5%) while the swamp areas experienced comparatively lower communal conflicts (34.5%). Inter community conflict was highest in Khana and Gokana LGAs while intra community conflict was highest in Obio Akpor LGA. The community conflict hotspots were in Ogbogoro, Okrika Town, Egbema and Ogbakiri. The correlation coefficient between frequency of conflict and infrastructural poverty was negative and low. -

With the largest population in Africa that can sustain domestic tourism, and many cultures which reflect in food and environment Nigeria is at advantage to attract both local and international tourists and therefore derive significant benefits for national development. However, the ecotourism resources of Nigeria are not packaged and promoted. Tourism in Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges: the biodiversity components are under serious threat; high rate of poaching and habitat destruction; lack of infrastructures; sabotage; poor global image; high level of insecurity; lack of awareness about tourism and conservation; poor tourism culture; insufficient facilities in eco-destination; poverty; corruption; underfunding; poor motivation of rangers; harassment by security personnel; poor road network and consistent traffic jam and poor maintenance culture amongst others. The tourism attractions in Nigeria when developed, properly packaged and promoted can satisfy the curiosity of almost every kind of tourists; and this will bring about increased benefits such as massive employment, increased revenue generation, local empowerment, foreign exchange earnings, creation of market for local product and development of infrastructures. -
