CARIBBEAN TOURISM MONTH2016 SPECIAL MESSAGE BY HUGH RILEY SECRETARY GENERAL & CEO, CARIBBEAN TOURISM ORGANIZATION . .. THEME: ONE SEA, ON); VOICE, ONE CARIBBEAN

BRIDGETOWN, Barbadi,s, I N.ov 2016. During 2015 our region has set arrival and visitor expenditure .records that have surpassed expectations. Canbl:Jea_n toumm grew by an estimated seven per cent to 28. 7 rilillioit visits, much higher than the projected four to five per cent. This pelformance was ilbove the global rate of growth, which the. UN agency, the World Tourism Organization quotes at 4.4 per cent. I.n that period, visitors spent over a billion dollars 111ore than they did in 2014, contnbuting approximately US$30 billion to Caribbean ecoi:i_o111ies. For 2016 the latest visitor arrival data in{iicate that tourist trips grew by 5.2% in the fn-st s_ix months when compared to the same period of 2.015, While this is encoW'llging, we must not settle. We certainly cannot relax until we l:x:co111ethe world's most desirable year round, W3!111 weather destination and until every citizen of the Cat'Ibbean benefits from tourism. The first priority is to embrace our mantra ofsi,stainable tourism development. We must keep the fight balance between maximizing the b~nefits of dur tourism assets for the wellbeing of ou_r citfrent populations, and do so responsibly, so that we can preserve those resources f dr generations to come. To maximize the ben_efit andpreserve resources, we need to create systems that ensure that guests and hosts can equally enjoy the experience. The economic benefits of the tourism industry are enormous_. In the Caribbean, where we have a clear understanding of tourism's contribution to fin_an_cial prosperity, we are seeing more of o·ur citizens becoming involved in 'the sh(lring economy'. We are opening our homes and aparfl7Jents to visitors from around the world_. Ordinary citizens have become hosts. Indeed if hospitality is about custoTTX?r service, then gues_tpitality must surely be about customer experience, During Caribbean Tourism Month, which we observe every November, we will I:iaVe the opportunity to place even greater emphasis on the kinds of experiences we offer to guests, which make up our exciting and diversified tourism product. It's also a great time to introduce new ideas, methods and products, to propose innovative and revolutionary thinking and to generate fresh energy into the sect<>r. Throughout November, the CTO will undertake several social media activities during which member countries will be profiled on the organization's social media platforms. These include: • 30 Day Social Media Photo/Video Challenge featuring the people, fashion, heritage and natural attributes of the CanlJbean • Help Me Pick a Caribbean HolidayNacation Spot Social Media Poll

• Online C_anbbean Fashion Show via Periscope & Facebook Live Marathon/Tweet-Chat

• ROllllllltic Facts about CTO mem_ber countries

This is an excellent opportunity to be featured globally and to demons:tra.te to the world that the spirit of togetherness we talk so passionately about remains alive and vihnint in the Canbbean. It .~!so helps to give meal).ing to the Caribbean Tourism Morith theme, One Sea, One Voice, One Canbbean. We wish to encourage every CTO member coun)!y, every tourism entity anii everyone engaged either directly or indirectly in tourism to join us by participating in these initiatives and by organjzii\g at least one activity during the month that will help focus attention on the industry. Be creative, be daring, be brave, be ll)Dovative.

We'll take this opportunity to thank the sponsors, supporters and everyone who helps us celebrate Caribbean Tourism Month.

Together, let's keep the right focus on this important industry and reaffirm the value of ◊11e Sea, One Voice, One Canbbean. ENDS-

delivered decliriing numbers this year, sparked by the weakening of the Canadian dollar .. We are moving to reverse that slide, combining our efforts with those of our CTO member-countries and our industry partners;

In the first quarter cif 2017 we will hire a business development representative to substantially enhan_ce the Caribbean' s engagement in Canada's most productive areas, identify and develop business in n011-traditional areas and work closely with our members' representatives for maximum impact. New travel agent training and certification, increased use of targeted social media, enhanced deployment of the CTO 's data analysis toc>ls, a:11d more focused engagem.ent with the Canbbean Diaspora are all components of the 2017 stratel!)' for Canada.

Our hotel partners, too, faced their own challenges from major markets. While air arrival numbers were up, the key perfonna.nc:e metrics for the hotel industry recorded declines through t_he first half of2016, based on data compi(ed by Smith Travel Research Inc. The slumps were influenced by a.rise in room stoc~ and a fall in deritiind for traditional hotel rooms, attributed in part to 'the sharing economy'.

Mother Nature challenged us as well, with some of our member-countries affected in varying degrees by hurricanes. Yet, despite the adversities occasioned by these events, our resi¥nce and fortitude as a region stood out and even the worst affected were back open for business in quick time, proving that tourism is an effective way tci re-energise an economy following a natural or otlier disaster.

The onset of the Zika virus also presented a challenge and the CTO C:ontinues to work with our partners, the Canbbean H.o~I and Tourism Association and the Caribbean Public Health Agency to address concerns raised by our supplifl.rs and potential visitors.

We also continue to monitor the possible impact of the Brexit vote as the UK m_oves to end and its membership in the European Union. Developments in the United States too are occf1pying our focused attention, the US market being the primary supplier of visitors to the Canbbean.

Our de:cia:ration of2016 as The Year of Romance in the Canbbean turned out to. be a success story, with member-countries and industry partners organizmg events· or participating in roadshows specializing in romance. Ideas blossomed, reinforcing the Canbbe.an's reputation for being the place most likely to celebrate, ignite or rekindle rciritiince.

Our 30 Days ofCanbbean Rolll8Jlc.e social media marathon reached 10.5 rilillion people in June, while millions more were reached through the innova#ve Periscope Marathon & Tweet Chat featuring Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 03/29/2017 11 :20:26 AM
