MDOT will also continue to implement processes developed at workshops and stakeholder meetings to incorporate context sensitive solutions into transportation projects, and hold public input sessions on future Five-Year Transportation Programs. We also commit to improving our process of tracking public engagement at the regional level, to enhance local communication and follow-up with transportation industry partners and the general public. Transportation plays a fundamental role in growing Michigan’s economy and protecting quality of life in our communities. A safe, well-maintained, and efficient transportation system provides the backbone for all economic activity within the state. Without a comprehensive transportation system, Michigan’s economy would be at a great competitive disadvantage and the quality of life within our communities would greatly deteriorate. Michigan faces many challenges in delivering sustainable transportation infrastructure im provements and services over the next five years. The most significant challenge is declining state transportation revenue and uncertain federal funding levels. This Five-Year Program identifies strategies that efficiently utilize the state and federal funds that we expect to be available over the five-year time frame. 2010 - 2014 FIVE-YEAR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM 4 2010-2014 FIVE-YEAR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT The public comment period for the Five-Year Transportation Program was November 30, 2009 through December 11, 2009. The preliminary draft was posted on MDOT’s web site and constituents were asked to submit comments. Letters could also be sent to the department through regular mail if necessary. The department received a total of 75 comments from the public. Forty-nine of them focused specifically on MDOT projects and the remainder of the comments addressed critical issues and suggestions for improvements to our funding system as well as the need to address funding for continued research and intermodal programs.
