SAPERE Griechische und lateinische Texte der späteren Antike (1.–4. Jh. n. Chr.) haben lange Zeit gegenüber den sogenannten ‚klassischen‘ Epo- chen im Schatten gestanden. Dabei haben die ersten vier nachchrist- lichen Jahrhunderte im griechischen wie im lateinischen Bereich eine Fülle von Werken zu philosophischen, ethischen und religiösen Fra- gen hervorgebracht, die sich ihre Aktualität bis heute bewahrt haben. Die – seit Beginn des Jahres 2009 von der Union der deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften geförderte – Reihe SAPERE (Scripta Antiquitatis Posterioris ad Ethicam REligionemque pertinentia, ‚Schriften der späteren Antike zu ethischen und religiösen Fragen‘) hat sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, gerade solche Texte über eine neuartige Verbindung von Edition, Übersetzung und interdisziplinärer Kommen- tierung in Essayform zu erschließen. Der Name SAPERE knüpft bewusst an die unterschiedlichen Konno- tationen des lateinischen Verbs an. Neben der intellektuellen Dimension (die Kant in der Übersetzung von sapere aude, „Habe Mut, dich deines eigenen Verstandes zu bedienen“, zum Wahlspruch der Aufklärung ge- macht hat), soll auch an die sinnliche des „Schmeckens“ zu ihrem Recht kommen: Einerseits sollen wichtige Quellentexte für den Diskurs in ver- schiedenen Disziplinen (Theologie und Religionswissenschaft, Philolo- gie, Philosophie, Geschichte, Archäologie ...) aufbereitet, andererseits aber Leserinnen und Leser auch „auf den Geschmack“ der behandelten Texte gebracht werden. Deshalb wird die sorgfältige wissenschaftliche Untersuchung der Texte, die in den Essays aus unterschiedlichen Fach- perspektiven beleuchtet werden, verbunden mit einer sprachlichen Prä- sentation, welche die geistesgeschichtliche Relevanz im Blick behält und die antiken Autoren zugleich als Gesprächspartner in gegenwärtigen Fragestellungen zur Geltung bringt. Vorwort zu diesem Band Dass der vorliegende Band innerhalb relativ kurzer Zeit zum Ab- schluss gebracht werden konnte, ist vor allem Fabio Berdozzo zu verdanken, der – auf der Grundlage der im Jahre 2003 erschienenen kommentierten und zweisprachigen griechisch-italienischen Cornutus- Ausgabe von Ilaria Ramelli – zu dieser SAPERE-Ausgabe Einleitung, Text mit deutscher Übersetzung und Anmerkungen zu dieser Über- setzung beigesteuert und ihr damit das Fundament gegeben hat, daneben aber auch allen weiteren Beiträgern, die sich in vorbildlicher Weise an ihnen auferlegte Fristen gehalten und damit zu der schnellen Vollendung ebenfalls wesentlich beigetragen haben. Die ursprünglich fremdsprachigen Beiträge von George Boys-Stones, Alexei Zado- rojnyi und Ilaria Ramelli wurden von Balbina Bäbler ins Deutsche (mit Revisionen von Heinz-Günther Nesselrath) übertragen; die Indices werden ebenfalls Balbina Bäbler verdankt. Annaeus Cornutus: ein Biogramm Der Autor dieses Kompendiums (ἐπιδροµή) der überlieferten Meinun- gen zur griechischen Theologie des Cornutus, dessen Name in den mittelalterlichen Handschriften des Werkes in unterschiedlicher Form überliefert ist (in der Genitivform: Κορνούτου, Κουρνούτου, Φορνού- του, Φουρνούτου, Φρουνούτου),1 wird gewöhnlich auf Grund der Namensgleichheit mit dem stoischen Philosophen und Rhetorik- Experten Lucius2 Annaeus Cornutus, der hauptsächlich als der Lehrer des Satirendichters Persius bekannt ist, identifiziert. Die direkte Zu- weisung des Kompendiums an den Philosophen Cornutus findet sich erst in viel späteren Quellen3 und ist daher zum Zweck einer Bestäti- gung der Autorschaft wenig aussagekräftig.4 Auf diese Frage wird später

  • Caves of Wonder
    CAVES OF WONDER: THE LEGITIMACY OF THE GROTTO AS A SUBTERRANEAN LANDSCAPE ELEMENT by VANESSA D. BERNSTEIN (Under the Direction of Marianne Cramer) ABSTRACT This thesis explores the relevance of the grotto as an architectural type through time and will propose design possibilities for continuing this tradition in the twenty first century. Specifically, it investigates grotto works from the classical period through the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the form, meaning, and purpose of the grotto as an underground chamber or passage. This thesis also considers the grotto as a platform for theoretical speculation on the implications of designing below the earth’s surface. The final component of the thesis is a design application comprised of three stories with corresponding collages that portray the design process for grotto inspired structures.
