Thank you for supporting all that I do—even when I wanted to grow up to be the Pope. By watching you, I learned the power of teaching by example. And, you set the best. Thank you. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation was completed under the guidance of my major professor, Dr. Barry Sapolsky. Dr. Sapolsky not only served as my major professor, but also as a mentor throughout my entire graduate program. He was a constant source of encouragement, motivation, and, at times, realism. In addition to serving on my committee, he also gave me the opportunity to work in the Communication Research Center. -

HOW-TO: CONDUCT MEDIA OUTREACH It’s important to build and sustain relationships with media who can: • Profile your Project and clients whose pensions you have recovered • Consult and quote Project staff on relevant stories • Include your Project in on- and off-line resource lists Consider engaging the following types of media (specific Detroit media outlets are used as a sample): Type Outlets Example Targets Print Community, daily, magazine, Associated Press, Detroit Free Press, news service/syndicate Detroit News, Real Detroit Weekly Radio AM, FM, regional radio WWJ-AM, WCSX-FM, WJR-AM, networks WMXD-FM, Online Blogs, Internet magazines and For Immediate Release, Daniel How’s weeklies blog TV Regional cable and TV networks, WJBK-TV (FOX), WDIV-TV (NBC), TV stations WXYZ-TV (ABC), Michigan Matters Newsletters See organizational partners Four Steps 1. Preparing For The Conversation Step 1: Identify Outlets & Establish Contacts As referenced above, NPARC will create a media list for each Project. The list will include 10 or more state and local reporters covering business, personal finance or senior issues within your Project’s region. Andrew W. Levin Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer, and Secretary Clear Channel Communications, Inc. 200 East Basse Road San Antonio, Texas 75201 (210) 822-2828 October 23, 2006 SUMMARY Clear Channel Communications, Inc. (“Clear Channel”) is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies and is the licensee of locally-programmed and locally- oriented radio and television stations that are dedicated to serving communities across the United States. Clear Channel has been able to expand its ability to deliver superior service to the public in part as a result of the deregulatory changes to the local radio ownership rule that Congress mandated in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (“1996 Act”). These changes were a result of Congress’ recognition of the growing rivalry that terrestrial broadcasters faced at the time of the 1996 Act’s passage, and the fact that regulatory relief would aid the industry in its quest to remain competitive.
